We have learned to our dismay that the Broadcasting Board of Governors has recently decided to cut out 2/3 of the personnel (9 out of 14 staff) of the Vietnamese Service at the Voice of America, pretexting the need to cut down on the budget of VOA.
We believe this to be an unconscionable act on the part of the BBG in view of the fact that such a cut would basically represent the elimination of a service that for fully sixty years has faithfully played the role of daily and living link between the government and people of the United States and the Vietnamese people.
Apparently, the people proposing such a cut have no idea what people's diplomacy is about and what the role of a media like the Voice of America represents. At a time when the avowed aim of the United States is to wish to see Vietnam democratized, it is unimaginable that one would want to cut the only source of official news coming from the United States of America.
With this letter, I would therefore plead with you to use your best influence not to let such an unwise proposition become reality. Please save the VOA Vietnamese Service.
Sincerely yours,
