... Ho explained to Patti that his draft of the Vietnamese declaration of independence needed polishing. Someone translated Ho’s words as Patti listened carefully... After the translator read a few sentences, Patti turned to Ho in amazement and asked if he really intended to use this text as his declaration of independence … Ho sat back in his chair, his palms together with fingertips touching his lips ever so lightly, as though meditating. “Should I not use it?” he asked.

So much for “inspiration.” What man asks of his muse, “Should I not use it?”

Dunn does use the phrase “Ho Chi Minh too turned to the United States for inspiration.” But she later also allows that perhaps, “He might have felt that his use of Jefferson’s Declaration would impart some legitimacy to his struggle…”

True inspiration or merely cheap imitation? How is one to know? The answer is clear if we consider the fruit of Viet Nam’s independence.

Ho Chi Minh is generally recognized for murdering at least a half million of his own countrymen, imprisoning untold tens of thousands more in re-education camps while appropriating their stuff for the use of the state. Texas Fred has a long list of Ho’s excesses. So much for inspiration from Life, Liberty and Property.

Amazingly, none of this is hidden, esoteric arcana. It’s readily available history. That, my friends, really is a fact.

The real question then is “How did the President not know?”

TT Mỹ bị chỉ trích khi so sánh Hồ Chí Minh, Thomas Jefferson

Một tổ chức nghiên cứu có uy tín của Mỹ vừa có bài xã luận liên quan đến phát biểu của Tổng thống Mỹ khi tiếp Chủ tịch nước Việt Nam Trương Tấn Sang mới đây.

Bài xã luận của tác giả Nick Zahn trên trang mạng của tổ chức nghiên cứu Heritage nhắm đến phát biểu của Tổng thống Obama khi ông này nói rằng “Hồ Chí Minh có được nguồn cảm hứng từ Tuyên ngôn Độc lập của Mỹ, từ Hiến pháp Mỹ và tư tưởng của Thomas Jefferson.”

Nhà phân tích Nick Zahn cho rằng Tổng thống Obama đã quên đi sự kiện là đã có nhiều triệu người Việt Nam chết do quyết định của ông Hồ Chí Minh, chưa kể hàng vạn quân nhân Hoa Kỳ.

Sự đau khổ chưa chấm dứt sau chiến tranh. Hàng triệu người bị giam cầm trong các trại cải tạo, và hàng trăm ngàn người chết trên đường vượt biển.

Trong khi đó, Thomas Jefferson đã nói rất rõ về các quyền phổ quát của con người trong bản Tuyên ngôn Độc lập. Các quyền này được Thượng Đế ban cho con người và chính quyền có nhiệm vụ bảo vệ các quyền đó.

Nhà phân tích này nói rằng bây giờ thì Tổng thống Obama còn một cơ hội nữa khắc phục lỗi lầm này nếu ông đến Việt Nam theo lời mời của Chủ tịch nước Việt Nam.Đó sẽ là dịp để ông Obama, trong tư cách là lãnh đạo của thế giới tự do, tỏ thái độ nhất quán và quả quyết để trình bày những quyền mà Thomas Jefferson đã nêu.

Và cũng chính nhờ áp dụng tư tưởng của Thomas Jefferson mà nước Mỹ mới có vị trí nổi bật trên thế giới hiện nay.
