Returned Services League under attack from Vietnam Veterans over plans to support a Memorandum of Understanding with Hanoi-based Vietnamese Veterans Association

THE RSL is under attack from Vietnam Veterans and their supporters over its plans to bury the hatchet with veterans of the North Vietnamese Army and Vietcong.
Furious veterans have bombarded websites with angry claims that the national president of the League, retired Rear Admiral Ken Doolan, was operating in secret and had misled Australians with his claims of support for the plan to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Hanoi-based Vietnamese Veterans Association.
A senior member of the Queensland RSL, who asked not to be named, said Admiral Doolan was wrong to include the Queensland state branch on his list of supporters of the move.
"The state president has advised the national president that no decision will be taken until next year,'' he said.
Both the WA and Tasmanian state branches flatly oppose the push.
The Vietnamese Veterans Association is an arm of the Communist Party of Vietnam and veterans are concerned that formal links with it would undermine support for Australia's former South Vietnamese allies in the Army of the Republic Of Vietnam.
At the launch of his book "We Were Reos'' in Sydney yesterday veteran Richard "Barney'' Bigwood accused the RSL of not consulting veterans and of ignoring his former allies.

"There is nothing being done for the people of South Vietnamese and this MOU would offend the Vietnamese people living in Australia as well,'' he said.
"The children of former ARVN soldiers are even denied an education and proper care.''
Another veteran, Ted Colmer, said he favoured reconciliation but did not want the RSL involved.
"We took their lives, they took our lives and we should reconcile things, but it shouldn't; be an issue that the RSL controls,'' Mr Colmer said.
President of the Vietnamese Community in Australia, Phong Nguyen, said reconciliation was a noble cause but not with a regime that abuses human rights and the freedoms of its own people.
"Shaking hands with the enemy while the regime is still the same simply dishonors the sacrifice of the diggers,'' Mr Phong said.

Bài ở trên nói đại loại là The Returned Services League (tạm gọi là Hội Cựu Chiến Binh) của Liên Bang Úc mới đây có ý định ký một bản thông giao (chủ yếu là để tỏ tình thân thiện, xóa bỏ hận thù) với hội Cựu Chiến Binh của Hà Nội.

Ý định nầy vừa bị các chi nhánh Cựu Chiến Binh của các Tiểu Bang lên tiếng cực lực phản đối. Họ cho rằng đây là một sự phản bội các chiến sĩ Úc đã chiến đấu ở Việt Nam và sẽ làm cộng đồng người Việt Tự Do tại Úc rất phẫn nộ.

Vấn đề đáng nói là ông Chủ Tịch Hội Cựu Chiến Binh Liên Bang loan báo trước đó rằng các chi nhánh Tiểu Bang rất ủng hộ ông ấy về việc nầy. Thật ra thì ông ấy chưa hề bàn thảo với ai cả mà chỉ âm thầm giàn xếp sau lưng mọi người với mục đích lừa gạt họ và dư luận quần chúng.

Xem ra phương cách làm việc nầy khá phổ biến trong giới lãnh đạo khi họ muốn quyết định riêng của họ có vẻ như đã được sự đồng tình của những người khác. )
