Fight Breaks Out Amongst Legislators In Taiwan's Parliament Over Nuclear Plant Bill (VIDEO)

A fight broke out amongst legislators during a parliament session on Friday over a controversial referendum proposal on building a fourth nuclear power plant.

Scuffles broke out when the ruling Nationalist Party legislators entered for a parliament session on Friday morning.

The parliament was scheduled to vote on Friday on whether to hold a referendum on halting the construction of the nuclear plant, also known as "Nuke 4," near Taipei.

Legislators threw water bottles, got into fights with one another, with one legislator seen wearing a helmet to protect himself in the scuffles.

International opposition to nuclear power flared following the 2011 crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant, but pressure on governments to reduce reliance on oil and tap cheaper energy forms is bringing projects back to the drawing board.

Violence took hold in Taiwan’s parliament when legislators threw water and pulled each other’s hair.

Annoyed by a perceived lack of respect for legislative procedures by the ruling KMT party, opposition
members had been demanding a clause-by-clause review of every bill under discussion.

Chaos ensued, as legislators stormed the podium occupied by the KMT.

Scuffles are not uncommon in Taiwan’s sharply divided parliament. Lunch boxes and microphones were
thrown during previous disputes.
