French waiter shot dead for being 'too slow with sandwich', say witnesses
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-with-sandwich
A customer fatally shot a waiter at a pizzeria on the outskirts of Paris, apparently enraged at being made to wait for a sandwich, according to witnesses.
The gunman, who a witness said lost his temper “as his sandwich wasn’t prepared quickly enough”, fled the scene.

Berlin’s Zig Zag Cycle Path
Germans have a reputation for being efficient and serious but the zig zag cycle path that appeared on a street in Berlin Zehlendorf suggests that the stereotype doesn’t apply to everyone.
A photo of the cycle path captioned ‘Tetris Radweg’ was the first thing I saw when I opened Facebook on Wednesday last week and at first I assumed it was photoshopped but it soon became clear that wasn’t the case.
“That’s not what was planned”, Maren Schellenberg of Die Grüne, the district councillor responsible for the cycle path was keen to point out, which left me to ponder how it had happened.
I came up with three options:
- Protest – Could it be that someone wanted to point out the shortcomings in Berlin’s planning for safe cycle routes? Cycle paths in the city are often in poor condition, not safely separated from traffic, and far too often blocked by parked cars.
- A joke – Maybe someone simply wanted to put a smile on the faces of local residents and cyclists.
- Stupidity.
There was plenty of speculation on social media. Some people picked up on point 1, like @Radelflieger who compared Berlin’s zig zag cycle path to far better options in Amsterdam and London.
Plenty of people saw the funny side. There were frequent mentions of Tetris and this clever Pac-Man simulation tweeted by @berlinonbike.
While stupidity certainly played a part it seems to me that the most likely explanation for the zig zag cycle path is poor communication between the local council and the firm they commissioned to paint it.
The footpath on Leo-Baeck-Straße is very narrow and a cycle path painted as two straight lines would not leave enough room for pedestrians. There are two schools (Schweizerhof Grundschule and John F Kennedy School) and a KiTa nearby so the intention is really only to provide a guide for the many children who ride their bikes to and from school. I imagine most kids find the new path funny but it’s clear that a new plan is needed.
As for the adults, in the time it took me to walk the approximately 300m long zig zag cycle path, I saw several cyclists riding along the road thereby avoiding the need to slalom past the trees.
If anyone is wondering how best to ride the zig zag cycle path, Frank Wolf from Berlin ist Beste has got you covered – get practising because you probably won’t have long to try it for yourself.

ROCKY SITUATION Tenerife to ban popular ‘stone towers’ tourist attraction
as they damage the habitats of local species and destroy the area
Kara Godfrey
TENERIFE wants to ban tourists from building the famous 'stone towers' at the beaches on the island as it is damaging the local environment.
Visitors flock to areas such as Playa Jardin to take photos of the towers as well as build their own.

Hundreds of people descend to the black-sand beach to look at the iconic stone statues, posing for Instagram images of the unusual sight.
However, local conservationists explain that the stone towers damage the local habitat as well as the creatures who use the stones as their home.
Local biologist Pedro Luis Sánchez explained in a video, according to The Local: "The stones provide a home for living beings, such as plant organism that are essential for the health of the soil and are needed for insects to thrive.
"They in turn provide food for reptiles who live under these rocks. When we pile up the rocks, we take away their home."
Biologist Matías Fonte added that the high towers put more pressure on the landscape, damaging it further.
According to El Pais, the trend boomed with tourists after a meditation event called the Harmonic Convergence in the US in 1987 built the towers during the event, leading to others wanting to replicate the image around the world.
The erection of stone towers is often seen as a monument for burial grounds or shrines, particularly in Scotland and Peru.
This has led to the misconstruction behind the meaning of the stones in Tenerife, which some tourists think is part of the local Spanish culture.

Jaime Coello, director of the Telesforo Bravo Juan Coello Foundation said that tourists "don’t realise" it isn't religiously significant: "When they see the towers, they think it is a local tradition and they imitate it."
Now, local volunteers in collaboration with the foundation sweep the area in a bid to take down the statues and return them to their rightful places.
While it takes less than an hour to clear the area, the stone towers are built again by the next day.
Plans to put up posters in the local area warning tourists about the repercussions of building the towers have also been suggested along with a potential legal ban.

The fall of Prague: ‘Drunk tourists are acting like they’ve conquered our city’
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...nquer-our-city
The spectacle was graphic evidence that “over-tourism”, a phenomenon more commonly associated with destinations such as Barcelona, Amsterdam, Venice and Edinburgh, has arrived in Prague – a city that was all but sealed off to western visitors until 1989 when the velvet revolution swept the former communist regime from power.
Tourists from Germany made up the highest proportion of visitors to Prague with 13.7% in 2018

One particularly ugly piece of vandalism last month prompted city authorities to up the ante, when graffiti was sprayed on the 600-year-old Charles Bridge. Two German tourists were fined and ordered to pay restoration costs. The graffiti was later removed by a Czech man acting alone and without authorisation.
