Some called in to complain about braying donkeys. Other tourists dialled up officials in the northern Spanish village of Ribadesella, population 5,700, to notify them of the mess left behind by wandering cows.

“Last week we had a lady who called us three or four times over a rooster that was waking her up at 5am,” said Ramón Canal, Ribadesella’s mayor. “She told us that we had to do something.”

In Ribadesella, the complaints were limited to a very small number of tourists, said Sánchez. But officials seized on the opportunity to make it clear to residents where they stood on the issue. “To hear a rooster crowing at night is normal,” Sánchez told the newspaper La Voz de Asturias. “If you come to a rural hotel, you have to be aware that this is daily life in the villages.”

Another EU Country Accepts Covishield Vaccine as Valid Proof of Immunity for Travel, Bringing the Number to 18

The number of European Union and Schengen Area Member States accepting the Covishield vaccine as valid proof of immunity of incoming travellers has increased to 18, since Romania – an EU but non-Schengen country – also recognises the vaccine.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Health, the country currently administers on its citizens and accepts as valid proof of immunity for entry into its territory the following vaccines:

• Comirnaty – Pfizer
• Moderna
• Vaxzervria – AstraZeneca
• Janssen – Johnson & Johnson
• Covishield (AstraZeneca – Serum Institute of India)

Travellers vaccinated with any of these five vaccines can enter Romania quarantine-free ten days after they receive the final shot of their vaccine. If the travellers come from an area in which the cumulative incidence rate of new COVID-19 cases in the last 14 days is less than or equal to 1,5 per 1000 inhabitants, not test requirement is applied to them.

The case is different for travellers from countries classified as yellow, in which the cumulative incidence rate of new COVID-19 cases in the last 14 days is between 1,5 and 3 per 1000 inhabitants

“Travellers arriving from countries classified as yellow, who do not provide a pre-departure negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival, are subject to a 14-day quarantine. Children under six years old are exempted from the PCR test requirement,” the EU Commission notes in its guidelines on entry to Romania.

The first four vaccines listed above have been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and are accepted by all EU and Schengen Area countries. The fourth is so far recognised by the following 18 countries.

Covishield, which is the Astra Zeneca vaccine produced in India, is the most widely recognised vaccine for travel in the EU after those approved by EMA.

The same was listed by the World Health Organization for emergency use on February 15, alongside the other version of the AstraZeneca/Oxford, which is produced by the AstraZeneca-SKBio in the Republic of Korea.

Over a month ago, in July, Soumya Swaminathan, an Indian clinical scientist who serves as a chief scientist at the World Health Organization (WHO), claimed that 15 EU countries accepted the AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured in India as proof of immunity for travel. Since then, Croatia, Finland and Romania have joined the group.

The African-Colombian moonshine, traditionally distilled from raw sugar cane and mixed with local herbs and fruits, was this week recognised by Colombia’s senate as part of the country’s “cultural and ancestral heritage”, a move that now awaits President Iván Duque’s approval.

The new law will allow for the liquor, until now mostly sold on roadsides and beachfronts across the Colombian Pacific, to be produced and commercialized at a larger scale by African-Colombians, while restricting production to ancestral communities.

African-Colombians have populated the regions along the country’s Pacific coasts since the 16th century, when their ancestors were brought from Africa as slaves to work on sugar cane plantations, goldmines and the large estates of landowning Spanish colonizers.
Viche, which usually has an ABV of about 35%, has traditionally been prepared by women, while the men worked the fields.

Along with its favored use as a ceremonial intoxicant, traditional communities have long used viche to purge stomach bugs and parasites, and as an aphrodisiac.

In Cali, a large city 72 miles inland from Buenaventura, the drink has found popularity with revelers who mix it with the juices of local fruits such as borojó and chontaduro at the annual Petronio Álvarez festival of Pacific music.

Laura Hernández, the sommelier at Colombia’s top-ranked restaurant, Leo, praised viche’s “citric aromas” and “notes of honey”. “I’m not the only one who is convinced that this spirit could be for Colombia what mezcal is for Mexico,” she wrote in the newspaper El Tiempo.

Solís, who is preparing for an upcoming viche festival, said she could not be happier with the new law.

“This will give opportunities to our children, and to allow all of us to share our culture,” Solís said. “Soon you will be able to take one sip of viche and you will taste the Pacific!”

A pair from Los Angeles have apparently opted for the latter. A 33-year-old woman and 34-year-old man were recently arrested after allegedly faking negative Covid test results in hopes of dodging Hawaii’s travel requirements.

A Chicago-area woman who visited the state in August allegedly uploaded a false vaccine record in a bid to skip quarantine. One big tip-off: she spelled “Moderna” on the card as “Maderna”.

The same month, another California duo, this time a father and son, were charged after allegedly attempting to pull off a similar maneuver. A couple from Florida also allegedly sought to escape a Hawaiian quarantine using fake vaccine cards – including cards for their children, who weren’t old enough to be vaccinated in the first place.

Meanwhile, headaches over fake documentation continue across the US. False cards have also turned up on Amazon and Etsy; others accused of falsifying cards include a California bar owner, a CVS employee and Vermont state troopers. And last week, a Michigan nurse was arrested after allegedly selling vaccination cards for $150 to $200 each over Facebook Messenger.

But the absence of mobile phone coverage is a much less endearing quirk for the 1,300 or so inhabitants, who are starting to rise up against not being able to make a call, send a text or search for something on Google on their handsets.

Galliano di Mugello became a symbol of Italy’s digital divide after a report from the ministry of innovation and AGCOM, the communications watchdog, placed it high among the 204 areas in Italy classified in the report as a “very white zone” because of its nonexistent mobile phone coverage and patchy internet service.

Although people can access the internet at home via ADSL or through the more recent arrival of fibre broadband, connection is often disrupted, especially when the weather is bad. Almost everyone has a mobile phone too, but they cannot use it when they are out and about in the hamlet.

“Mobile phone companies don’t invest in Galliano because they don’t think it’s worth the cost,” said Mongatti.

The figures, compiled from 2016-2019, before the pandemic, show robberies fell in Europe by 11% over the period, with an average of approximately 55 for every 100,000 people.

While current pan-European figures have yet to be compiled, the pandemic, through a combination of lockdowns and the collapse of tourism, has seen a drastic fall in most crimes in countries with high crime rates, while it has had less impact on countries where crime was already low, such as Hungary.

This has especially been the case in Spain where, compared with 2019, street robbery in 2021 fell by 34% and robbery with violence by 22%. In Barcelona the figures were 56% and 32% respectively, twice that of Madrid. As Barcelona is Spain’s – and, indeed, Europe’s – bag-snatching capital, this suggests the decline in tourism has been a decisive factor.
