German brewery gives away free beer after COVID-19 dashes sales
Faced with the prospect of dumping thousands of liters of beer that couldn't be delivered to restaurants and hotels due to coronavirus closures, a brewery in western Germany got creative — and is giving it away for free.
With COVID-19 restrictions closing hotels and bars, one German brewery decided to give away its beer rather than throwing it out.
The Willinger Brauhaus in the western state of Hesse gave away an estimated 2,600 liters (690 gallons) of light and dark beer by Thursday, Reuters news agency reported.
"We also want to thank people, and we hope they are as supportive once we reopen, that they come here, recommend us," brewery owner Franz Mast told Reuters.
The beer was intended for restaurants and hotels, but COVID-19 restrictions made the brewery's normal deliveries impossible.
As several states in Germany look to slowly reopen restaurants and bars in the next few weeks, Mast said the brewery needs to empty its tanks and fill them with fresh beer.
With a shelf life of eight weeks, the clock was ticking on the brewery's stock of unfiltered beer, reported the local Waldeckische Landeszeitung newspaper.

A hit with local customers
The free beer giveaway was a success with local customers. Dozens of people lined up outside the brewery on Thursday — making sure to wear masks and socially distance as they waited to pick up their free bottles.
"I hope it helps the brewery, that is why we are here. This way, we can sit in the garden later today, in the sun, and have a nice Willinger beer," customer Natalie Julius told Reuters.
In a Facebook post, the brewery said it ran out of beer by the afternoon, but vowed to have more bottles ready for the next giveaway on Tuesday — albeit with a limit "of three bottles per person."
The coronavirus crisis has hit Germany's local breweries particularly hard. Soccer stadiums and bars have shut while major beer festivals — including Bavaria's Oktoberfest — have been called off.
The Deutsche Brauer Bund beer association is warning that brewers face a potential collapse in sales, particularly due to a slump in exports to China and Italy.

It's raining Guinness! Irish pubs use vans and drones to lift spirits
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/09/its-raining-guinness-irish-pubs-use-vans-and-drones-to-lift-spirits
It’s terrible to see your pub empty, it’s like a death in the family.
Mark Grainger, Dublin publican
Pubs are responding as best they can. For McKeever, the drone deliveries are a way to lift spirits – no pun intended – and nourish her bar’s connection to the community.
Other pubs are racking up brisk sales by delivering pints to customers’ doorsteps. “You ring up, order pints and pay with a credit card,” said Mark Grainger, owner of Graingers Hanlons Corner, a Dublin pub which has pioneered the strategy.
Staff pull the pints – usually Guinness – seal the glasses and put them in a coolbox. Drivers with gloves and masks deliver them within the 5km radius permitted by lockdown rules. “The pint would be perfect. We’re now nearly six weeks in and not had one complaint,” said Grainger.
Orders come from all over the world – Britain, the US, Australia, Dubai – as the Irish diaspora seizes on the chance to send some love, in the form of drinks and cooked meals, to Dublin relatives in lockdown. “It’s good business-wise but not as good as if the pub was open. It’s survival. If we didn’t do it, we wouldn’t be getting any income,” said Grainger.

US youth tries sneaking into Germany to see girlfriend
A 20-year-old American flew to Frankfurt and attempted to sneak past an airport security point by posing as a janitor. The man was apparently trying to circumvent the pandemic restrictions so he could see his girlfriend.
A US man's plot to visit his girlfriend in Germany was foiled by airport employees in Frankfurt, the airport police said on Tuesday.
Germany maintains an air traffic connection with the US but most US nationals are not allowed to enter the country under current travel restrictions.

The German government makes exceptions for German residents or family members of German nationals.
The 20-year-old flew into Frankfurt Airport on Sunday and then tried to disguise himself as a janitor in order get past the airport security checkpoint.
The man put on a reflective vest and grabbed two black trash bags and headed towards the checkpoint, pretending he was there to empty the trash cans.
However, a "watchful employee" noticed that the man had no security ID and that he could also not speak German. She informed the police, who in turn detained the US national, the authorities said in their report.
When questioned by the police, the man admitted that he hatched the plot because he saw no legal possibility to see his Germany-based girlfriend.
According to the police, the man would still not be able to enter the country even if he managed to sneak past the security checkpoint, as he would still be in the airport's transit area and would need to go through a separate checkpoint managed by the border police.
The man was into a US-bound flight on Monday, the authorities said.

Model companions: restaurant solves social distancing dilemma with mannequins
https://www.theguardian.com/food/202...mma-mannequins
With the idea that guests may feel lonely eating at a restaurant that can only reach 50% capacity – the maximum mandated by Virginia’s social distancing regulations – the restaurant will be placing mannequins throughout its dining rooms.“
When we needed to solve the problem of social distancing and reducing our restaurant’s occupancy by half, the solution seemed obvious – fill it with interestingly dressed dummies,” Patrick O’Connell, the star chef who heads the restaurant, told a Fox 5 DC, a local news station.
“I’ve always had a thing for mannequins – they never complain about anything, and you can have lots of fun dressing them up.”
