Trump now says if 100,000 Americans die from coronavirus he will have done 'a very good job'
    https://news.yahoo.com/trump-coronav...153353997.html

At the first formal press briefing with his coronavirus task force on Feb. 26, President Trump said he didn’t agree with the assessment of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that an outbreak was “inevitable” in the United States, noting that the country had just 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and no deaths attributed to the virus.

“When you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done,” Trump said at the time. “We have it so well under control. I mean, we really have done a very good job.”

Ever since, Trump has been moving the goalposts on the pandemic, and on Sunday, with coronavirus cases and deaths mounting, Trump said that keeping the U.S. death toll between 100,000 and 200,000 would be “a very good job.”

“If we could hold that down, as we’re saying, to 100,000, that’s a horrible number, maybe even less, but to 100,000 — so we have between 100- and 200,000 — we altogether have done a very good job,” Trump said during a task force press briefing in the White House Rose Garden.

Sweden dismisses Trump's claim after US president takes swipe at coronavirus strategy

Sweden on Wednesday pushed back on US President Donald Trump's claim that the country was 'suffering' more than others.

Stockholm has not imposed extraordinary lockdown orders seen elsewhere in Europe to stem the spread of the virus. Almost 700 people have died with the virus in the Scandinavian nation.

Asked at a White House briefing on Tuesday what advice he would offer to leaders who were sceptical of social distancing measures, Trump replied: "There aren't too many of them… They talk about Sweden, but Sweden is suffering very gravely."

Instead of a lockdown, Sweden has called on citizens to take responsibility and follow social distancing guidelines and stay home if they have symptoms, and has also banned gatherings of more than 50 people and barred visits to nursing homes.

But primary schools, shops, cafés, restaurants and bars remain open.

Foreign Minister Ann Linde pushed back against Trump's claim Sweden was not doing enough.

"We are doing about the same things that many other countries are doing, but in a different way," Linde told broadcaster TV4.

"We trust that people take responsibility."

On Wednesday, Swedish health authorities reported 8,419 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, with 687 deaths, saying that the infection rate seemed to be slowing down in Stockholm but increasing in other parts of Sweden.

State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell at Sweden's Public Health Agency told reporters he did not believe Sweden was suffering any more than any other country.

"No, we don't share his opinion," said Tegnell. "Of course we're suffering. Everybody in the world is suffering right now, in different ways. But Swedish healthcare, which I guess he alludes to, it's very difficult to understand, is taking care of this in a very, very good manner.

"It's a lot of work, it's a lot of stress for the personnel and it's really a fight for them every day, but it's working and the Swedish healthcare is delivering results just as good as they have ever done. The Swedish healthcare is one of the best in the world and it continues to be like that."

Trump's 'gift from God' drug: more deaths!

Veterans With COVID-19 Given Trump-Touted Hydroxychloroquine Showed No Benefits, Study Finds

    Lisette Voytko

    TOPLINE

In a retrospective study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, doctors examined patient outcomes for U.S. military veterans with COVID-19 who were given hydroxychloroquine (an anti-malaria drug touted by President Trump as coronavirus treatment) and compared them to patients who did not receive that treatment; the researchers concluded there was no overall benefit—and that there were more deaths among patients treated with hydroxychloroquine alone.

    KEY FACTS

    • With 368 patient records from Veterans Health Administration analyzed, the Associated Press reported that the study is the largest look at the use of hydroxychloroquine with or without azithromycin, an antibiotic.
    • The records of three roughly equal groups were examined—those given hydroxychloroquine alone, those given hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, and those who received neither drug.
    • About 28% of patients given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, compared to 22% who received the drug plus azithromycin.
    • About 11% of those who received neither drug passed away, but when the researchers controlled for other factors, they concluded this represented a similar risk to the group that received the combination of the two drugs, but that “the risk of death from any cause was higher” among those who took hydroxychloroquine alone.
    • Hydroxychloroquine made no difference in patients’ needs for ventilators, in combination or alone, according to the study.
    • “These findings highlight the importance of awaiting the results of ongoing prospective, randomized, controlled studies before widespread adoption of these drugs,” the researchers wrote.

    CRUCIAL QUOTE

“I think we’re all rather underwhelmed” at what’s been seen in patients who tried hydroxychloroquine, University of Madison infection control director Nasia Safdar told the AP. “But now I think that people have realized we don’t know if it works or not.”

    KEY BACKGROUND

No treatment (either a drug or vaccine) exists for COVID-19, which has infected over 2.5 million people and killed nearly 175,000 worldwide, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The VA study has been submitted to the New England Journal of Medicine, but it has not yet been reviewed by other scientists. After the Food and Drug Administration granted approval for hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine to be tested as possible COVID-19 treatments, President Trump has publicly touted the drug multiple times. U.S. poison centers have seen an uptick in hydroxychloroquine abuse since Trump first mentioned the drug on March 19. Hydroxychloroquine, the Washington Post reported, also has serious side effects, including a possible risk of irregular heartbeats, when COVID-19 is causing a heart infection in some of the most seriously ill patients. The NIH’s official clinical guidelines recommend not using hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin together—except in clinical trials—due to the risk of toxicity. A Brazilian study of the drug was halted when one-quarter of patients given higher doses developed heart rhythm problems.

    WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The AP noted that other, more rigorous studies by the National Institutes of Health and other organizations are in progress. U.S. pharma company Pfizer PFE is looking at the potential use of azithromycin as a treatment by itself.

Trump reportedly owes tens of millions to the Bank of China
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...na-debt-report

Donald Trump is reported to owe tens of millions of dollars to China, through a real estate debt which falls due in 2022, offering “astonishing leverage” to Beijing. The debt derives from a 30% share the US president owns in a billion-dollar building on the Avenue of the Americas in Manhattan, which was refinanced in 2012, with $211m of the funding coming from the state-owned Bank of China, Politico reported on Friday.

The Chinese debt complicates Trump’s emerging election strategy of portraying his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, as being soft on China. In a briefing on Saturday, Trump said that “China will own the United States” if Biden was elected in November.

But China is heavily involved in the Trump business empire. A Chinese state-owned construction company is helping build the Trump World Golf Club in Dubai, and Beijing has awarded trademarks to the president’s daughter, Ivanka. In the past, Ivanka’s husband (and a White House adviser), Jared Kushner, has sought Chinese finance for at least one major real estate deal.

The president is a passive minority investor in the 1290 Avenue of the Americas office tower. The main investor is Vornado Realty Trust, which owns 70%.

The Trump Organization has recently applied for coronavirus compensation from the government.

Trump’s approach to China has alternated between combative and unctuous, particularly in relation to the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, with whom Trump has consistently claimed to have an excellent personal relationship.

Trump tweeted on 24 January, in the early stages of the pandemic: “China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!”

“I study Beijing’s influence on America, and this is the most problematic conflict of interest I’ve seen,” Isaac Stone Fish, a senior fellow at the Asia Society, wrote on Twitter. “The Bank of China is a state-owned bank, controlled by China’s State Council, the country’s major administrative body, chaired by the Premier Li Keqiang.

“The leverage this presents is astonishing. What if the Bank of China cancels the loan, or requires Trump to pay it back earlier?” Fish asked. “Is this why Trump often praises Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping? Does this cause him to temper his policies or his public remarks? This raises so many questions.”

Calls To Poison Centers Spike After The President’s Comments About Using Disinfectants To Treat Coronavirus

This illustration photo shows a bottle of Clorox bleach in Culver City, California, on April 24, 2020, amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. - Top White House coronavirus advisor Deborah Birx shrank in horror and around the nation comedians sharpened their pens: President Donald Trump had just asked if virus victims couldn't be injected with disinfectant. Even as a new poll shows most Americans wish the former real estate magnate would leave science to the experts, Trump on April 23 evening hit a new high in the annals of amateur presidential doctoring. Words have consequences.

It’s as simple as that, and words coming from the President of the United States matter.

They matter because words and direction coming from the President are typically taken seriously by people who live in the U.S.

When Donald Trump said that he would consider exploring the use of injecting disinfectants into the body to treat coronavirus, the medical community shuddered due to the dangerous and irresponsible implications of this suggestion.

But people certainly listened to his words as officials from the Maryland Emergency Management Agency sent out an alert one day after receiving more than 100 calls about ingesting disinfectants as a possible treatment for COVID-19, according to the Governor’s office, and reported by ABC News.

Meanwhile, calls to New York City’s Poison Control Center for exposure to specific household cleaners and disinfectants increased more than twofold after the President’s comments on Thursday, WNBC New York reported today. Data from the New York Poison Center center revealed that in the 18 hours after Trump’s comments, the Poison Center received 30 exposure calls about disinfectants. Ten involved bleach, 9 were about Lysol, and 11 others regarding other household cleaners. Compared to the same time window last year, there were a total of 13 exposure calls, with 2 involving bleach, but none involving Lysol-type products.

The state of Illinois has also seen a significant increase in calls to poison control over the past 2 days, according to Dr. Ngozi Ezike, Illinois Public Health Director in a press conference earlier today, as reported by CNN. One call involved someone using a sinus rinse consisting of a detergent-based solution, and another individual who gargled with a mixture of mouthwash and bleach intended to kill the coronavirus.

While UV light and disinfectants may have a role in treating surfaces exposed to coronavirus, there is absolutely no medical evidence that they have any role in treating the virus inside the human body, in any form or any manner. This includes inhalation, injection or ingestion. Period.

What followed after these dangerous comments was no short of a frantic rush by manufacturers (Clorox and Lysol) the CDC, EPA, and other state emergency management agencies that disinfectants were in no shape or form to be used inside the human body.

But even before Trump mentioned use of disinfectants at his press conference to kill the virus, fear of COVID-19 sparked online conspiracy theories and discussions about using bleach to cleanse the body internally. Obviously, the implications for this, and children who find cleaning products around the home are frightening.

But even before the President’s comments at his press conference, a CDC study released earlier this week noted that calls to U.S. poison centers for cleaners and disinfectants rose significantly compared with the same period over the past 2 years. It also noted a significant increase in March of the past 2 years for both types of cleaners. Another study from the Washington Poison Center also showed a 23% increase in exposures to cleaners compared to 2019.

What’s clear is that the President’s comments won't make matters any better, especially in light of already concerning CDC and local poison center data on spikes in exposures to cleaners and disinfectants.

Bleach is dangerous because it is an oxidizing agent which means that it destroys or denatures proteins (tissues) in your body. It’s comparable to cooking an egg, with the understanding that an egg cannot be “uncooked”. Furthermore, ingestion of bleach can also lead to hemolysis, a process in which red blood cells cells in your body may shatter, so that you can't carry oxygen to the tissues in your body.

With this in mind, ingestion of bleach can have serious effects ranging from burns to the mouth, esophagus and respiratory tract which may lead to kidney failure, liver failure and respiratory failure (ARDS) requiring intubation and mechanical ventilation.

For these reasons, parents need to place all disinfectants and cleaners in a safe place, locked away from young children as I explained in a Forbes post earlier this week. Even hand sanitizer, which contains 60-90% alcohol can be toxic. A recent CDC report described a young child who ingested hand sanitizer with an alcohol level of 273 mg/dl (potentially deadly), requiring ICU admission. While the child made an uneventful recovery, the potential for elevated carbon dioxide levels leading to respiratory depression and death serve as a reminder regarding the dangers of ingesting alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

Court Prohibits Dallas Health Center from Touting “Ozone Therapy” as a COVID-19 Treatment
    https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/court...d-19-treatment

“The Department of Justice will not stand by and permit the fraudulent promotion of supposed COVID-19 treatments that do no good and that could be harmful,” said Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt of the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “We are working with law enforcement and agency partners to stop those who attempt to profit by selling useless products during this pandemic.”

“This defendant preyed on public fear, peddling bogus treatments that had absolutely no effect against COVID-19,” said U.S. Attorney Erin Nealy Cox for the Northern District of Texas. “As we’ve said in past COVID-19 civil cases: the Department of Justice will not permit anyone to exploit a pandemic for personal gain.”

The court filings alleged that Allen claimed Purity’s ozone treatments – which she asserted would increase oxygen in the blood, making it impossible for viruses to manifest – were 95 percent effective even for someone who had tested positive for COVID-19. She claimed a team of “doctors” had recommended an “ozone steam sauna” for someone with COVID-19.

On Instagram, Purity Health & Wellness claimed ozone was the “only prevention” for COVID-19 and insisted the treatment could “eradicate” the virus. The center also claimed ozone could combat other deadly diseases, including cancer, SARS, and Ebola.

“We will not allow anyone to illegally profit by exploiting the fear and anxiety related to the COVID-19 pandemic,”
said FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge Matthew J. DeSarno. “The FBI and our partners are working together every day to prevent, detect, and dismantle COVID-19 fraud.”

“The FDA will continue to help ensure those who place profits above the public health during the COVID-19 pandemic are stopped,” said Stacy Amin, Food and Drug Administration Chief Counsel.

“We are fully committed to working with the Department of Justice to take appropriate action against those jeopardizing the health of Americans with unproven treatments.”

    Trump Death Clock
    https://trumpdeathclock.com/
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...coronavirus-us

The website, created by independent film-maker Eugene Jarecki, is a conscious echo of the National Debt Clock which since 1989 has given a running score near Times Square in Manhattan of total US borrowing. The Trump Death Clock extends the idea dramatically by providing a tracker measured not in dollars but in lives allegedly lost by the president’s own inept actions.

The Trump Death Clock provides a bald tally of lives that it claims were needlessly lost to Covid-19 that ticks upwards in real time. At the time of reporting this article, it stood at 39,435 – laying responsibility for almost 40,000 American lives at the White House door.

The figure is in turn based upon the authoritative running tally of total deaths from Covid-19 compiled by the Covid Tracking Project. From its daily read-out of coronavirus fatalities, Jarecki’s team has created the Trump Death Clock through a simple mathematical calculation of 60% of total deaths from the disease in the US.

The 60% ratio used in the death clock was drawn from a study by two prominent epidemiologists, Britta Jewell of Imperial College, London, and Nicholas Jewell, a professor of biostatistics at UC Berkeley. Writing in the New York Times in April, they posited the theory that if Trump had introduced the White House social distancing guidelines not on 16 March but a week earlier on 9 March, a 60% reduction in the expected final death count could have resulted given the exponential spread of the virus.

“I believe we need a national measure of the cost of the recklessness of the president’s pandemic response,” Jarecki said. “He was advised multiple times by the intelligence services and his own public health experts of the significance of this pandemic and the need to take mitigating action, and yet those warnings were not acted upon.”

Even Dr Anthony Fauci, the leading infectious disease expert in the US who has been central to the federal Covid-19 response, has publicly noted the cost in American lives of failing to lock down early on. “If you had a process that was ongoing and you started mitigation earlier, you could have saved lives,” he told CNN.

Asked whether he was anxious about how Trump might respond to being directly accused of causing tens of thousands of deaths, Jarecki replied: “I can’t think about that. I feel I owe it to people who lost their lives to demand accountability and more responsible leadership going forward so that they did not die in vain.”
