Austria announces Europe's first nationwide vaccine mandate and reimposes lockdown as Covid-19 soars
By Nadine Schmidt and Stephanie Halasz, CNN

    Updated 1942 GMT (0342 HKT) November 19, 2021

(CNN)Austria is going back into a national lockdown and plans to become the first country in Europe to make Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for all eligible people as the nation's coronavirus crisis deepens, Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg announced Friday.

Schallenberg said his government would look to impose the national vaccine requirement from February 1. Just under 66% of Austria's total population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, one of the lower rates in the European Union, where cases are surging.
The national lockdown -- the first in Europe this fall -- starts Monday and will last for 10 days minimum, and could be extended for a further 10 days, Schallenberg told reporters at a news conference in Vienna.
"We don't want a fifth wave. We don't want a sixth and seventh wave. We don't want to have this discussion next summer," Schallenberg said.

The move comes only days after Austria took the step, unprecedented in Europe, of imposing lockdown measures for all those age 12 and older who are not fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
Under those measures, which came into force on November 15, the unvaccinated were ordered to stay at home except for a few limited reasons, with the rules policed by officers carrying out spot checks on those who were out and about.
Vaccinations are currently recommended for everyone aged 12 and above in Austria. On Monday, a pilot scheme to vaccinate children aged five to 11 got under way in Vienna, the national capital.

Asked by CNN from what age the mandatory vaccination order would apply, the Austrian Chancellory said: "Details are still to come, from what age and when you are considered fully vaccinated."
Austrian Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein said Friday that schools and kindergartens would remain open during the upcoming national lockdown.
But Schallenberg said it was possible for parents to take their children out of school if they so wished. "This is always a challenge, for every family," he said. During the first Austrian lockdown, schools and kindergartens were closed.
Mückstein also urged the wearing of FFP2 masks in all enclosed spaces and said employees could request the option of working from home where possible.
Once the national lockdown is lifted, lockdown measures will remain in place for unvaccinated Austrians, Mückstein said, adding that everything needed to be done to avoid a "fifth wave."

COVID causes cancellation of popular Christmas market in Germany

One of Germany's most popular Christmas markets has fallen victim to the country's worsening COVID situation.

The one at Nuremberg in Bavaria was scrapped on Friday.

Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder, making the announcement, said: "The situation is very, very serious and complicated."

He justified the decision by saying that such markets see multiple contacts between people and that it was difficult to monitor the health status of each visitor.

Bavaria has also moved to a de facto lockdown of its unvaccinated. Public places such as restaurants, cinemas and concert halls will only now be open to those with the jab or those that have recently recovered from the disease.

The unvaccinated will also be forced to limit their contacts to five people from two homes, Söder said.

In districts where the incidence exceeds 1,000 new cases of infection per 100,000 people over 7 days, "everything will have to be closed," he added, with the exception of schools and businesses.

"We have a clear goal: to fight the coronavirus, to protect the people and the health care system," Söder added.

"It's not war rhetoric. It's a deep concern that makes us act," he launched.

Earlier this week health authorities issued a stark warning as 65,371 new cases were reported in a single day, confirming an upward trend that experts have been warning about for weeks.

"We are currently heading toward a serious emergency,” said Lothar Wieler, director of the Robert Koch Institute, Germany's disease control agency. "We are going to have a really terrible Christmas if we don't take countermeasures now."

Merkel’s husband hits out at ‘laziness’ of unvaccinated Germans

“It is astonishing that a third of the population does not follow scientific findings,” Merkel’s husband, Joachim Sauer, said in an interview with Italian newspaper la Repubblica and picked up by German daily Die Welt.

“In part, this is due to a certain laziness and complacency of Germans,” said Sauer, who seldom speaks in public."

EU to block flights after Belgium new variant case

EU nations should impose an emergency flight ban on countries where a new coronavirus variant has been found, the European Commission has said, as Belgium confirmed a case.

The variant, currently known as B.1.1.529, has also been identified in South Africa, Botswana, Hong Kong and Israel.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is meeting to discuss the development.

Scientists say they still have much to learn about the virus's new mutations.

The WHO has said it will take a few weeks to understand the impact of the new variant, as experts work to determine how transmissible it is.

The variant is yet to be given a more memorable name, like Delta or Beta. The WHO is expected to name it on Friday, and announce whether it is a variant of concern or just a variant of interest.

It is very different to the other variants that have emerged so far. Scientists have said it is the most heavily mutated version yet, which means Covid vaccines, which were designed using the original strain from Wuhan, may not be as effective.
