Farmers' union warns walkers after cows trample man to death
    https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...-death-by-cows

A schoolteacher from North Yorkshire has become at least the second member of the public to be trampled to death by cows in the UK this year, as the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) urged walkers to let their dogs off their leads if they are charged by cattle.

Dave Clark, the deputy headteacher at Richmond school, was killed in a field in Richmond on Monday evening while walking his dogs.

He is at least the second member of the public to be killed by cows while dog walking this year. An 82-year-old man was trampled to death in front of his wife near Ingleton, in the Yorkshire dales, in June.

Between March 2000 and March 2020, 98 people were killed by cattle in the UK, according to the HSE. Of those, 22 were members of the public, with the rest being either farmers or farm workers.

Last year, two people, both farmers, were killed by cattle. A 73-year-old was knocked over and killed by a cow in a pen while treating a newborn calf. A 37-year-old farmer was trampled to death by his bull when attempting to direct it into a pen.

Members of the public killed by cows are almost always walking on public footpaths or commonly used rights of way when they are attacked, the HSE says, and are very often accompanied by dogs. More often than not, calves are involved, with cows protecting their young.

In 2018 to 2019, the HSE investigated 43 incidents involving people being hurt or killed by cattle.

A dog was present in 18 of the 43 incidents reported, mainly with members of the public on footpaths. In eight cases the dog was reported to be on a lead.

In September last year, a coroner urged awareness of the dangers cattle could pose to the public after an 87-year-old woman was killed by cows at Linchmere Common, near Chichester in West Sussex.

Farmers can be prosecuted if their cattle maul walkers or farm workers. In 2015 a Staffordshire dairy farmer was given a four-month suspended sentence and fined £133,000 after a Holstein bull rammed one of his employees to death.

In 2013 a farmer in Cornwall was ordered to pay £20,000 after a walker sustained life-threatening injuries when she was trampled by cows while walking on a public footpath in St Martin, near Helston.

Có đảng (Swiss People's Party (SVP)) muốn .....nhưng lòng dân ...chưa muốn.

Switzerland firmly rejects end of free movement with EU - projection

EPA - Opponents of the plan say it will damage relations with the EU

Swiss voters have rejected in a referendum a proposal to end an accord with the EU on the free movement of people, TV projections suggest.

Broadcaster SRF said voters were set to reject the plan by 63% to 37%.

Ballots are still being counted, and final results are due within hours.

Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but currently accepts free movement so that it can have access to free trade and co-operate with Brussels in areas like transport and education.

The proposal came from the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP), and was a successor to a 2014 referendum to introduce quotas on immigrants from the EU, which narrowly passed.

Supporters of the anti-free movement plan said it would allow Switzerland to control its borders and select only the immigrants it wants.

Opponents argued it would plunge a healthy economy into recession, and deprive hundreds of thousands of Swiss citizens of their freedom to live and work across Europe.

People have also been voting on a number of other issues.
They appear to have backed paternity leave for new fathers, and rejected a proposal to make it easier to hunt protected species such as wolves.

What are the possible consequences for Brexit?

The Swiss referendum was already being prepared before the UK voted to leave the EU in 2016.

The SVP has used similar arguments to Brexiteers about having more control over immigration in a country which they say is becoming more overcrowded and expensive as a result.

But net migration into Switzerland is actually falling at the moment, and there is a sense voters are becoming weary of the party's anti-immigration message.

The BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva says a resounding yes to free movement of people might well strengthen Brussels' hand with London, and be a signal to the UK of just what kind of compromises might be needed to agree a free-trade deal with the EU.

    Timeline: Switzerland and the EU

1992: Swiss vote by 50.3% to 49.7% against joining European Economic Area - first step towards EU membership

1992-2002: Switzerland negotiates, then signs first bilateral agreements with EU - they are interdependent, and include free movement of people - backed by a vote in 2000

2005: Swiss vote to join Europe's Schengen open borders treaty and extend free movement to 10 new EU states

2009: Vote to extend freedom of movement to new EU members Romania and Bulgaria

2014: Swiss narrowly back quotas on EU workers

Pompeo to criticise Vatican's renewal of China deal during visit
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/sep/28/mike-pompeo-to-protest-against-vaticans-deal-with-china-during-visit

Mike Pompeo will visit the Vatican to protest against the imminent renewal of a deal between the Catholic church and China, which the US secretary of state claims endangers its moral authority.

Pope Francis has reportedly declined to meet Pompeo during his visit this week, citing the closeness of the US election. However, such a move is likely to be linked to Pompeo’s recent attacks on the Vatican’s perceived soft-pedalling on China’s human rights record as the two sides prepare to extend a historic agreement signed two years ago.

The details of the deal have never been made public, but it gave the Vatican a say in the appointment of Catholic bishops in China.
Pope Francis also recognised eight bishops that had been appointed by Beijing without his approval.

Cực hủ tức là cực độc:

Greece puts faith in judges to heal wounds inflicted by Golden Dawn
    https://www.theguardian.com/global/2...by-golden-dawn

In proceedings both dramatic and banal, 68 people, including the party’s entire leadership, have faced charges of operating a criminal organisation while at the same time posing as a political group. Police officers who allegedly supported the far-right party are among those in the dock.

MPs who represented the xenophobic bloc until its electoral defeat in July 2019 are accused of attempted murder, possession of weapons and employing violence to eradicate perceived enemies. Like Nikolaos Michaloliakos, a Holocaust denier who founded the neo-Nazi movement in the early 80s, they claim to be victims of political persecution.

Writing in Saturday’sSyntakton newspaper, leaders from across the spectrum rejoiced in “the end of Golden Dawn”.

“Greece suffered as few countries from Nazism,” wrote the centre right prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “It mourned victims, it experienced tragedies, it endured destruction. That is why it fought Nazism. There is no place in our country for [its] mimics and followers.”

Calling the trial’s conclusion “a historic milestone for Greek democracy,” the leftist former premier, Alexis Tsipras, said the extremists had been forced to confront their “horrible acts”. Neighbourhoods had been soaked in fear and blood. “Golden Dawners are no longer in parliament and after the trial’s conclusion the members of this criminal gang must go to jail,” he added.

Kenzo Takada: Japanese designer dies from Covid-19

Getty Images - Kenzo was known for his love of graphics and bright colours

The Japanese founder of popular fashion brand Kenzo has died aged 81, from complications linked to coronavirus.

Tributes have poured in from all across the world for Kenzo Takada who died at the American Hospital in Paris

Known for his bright graphics, jungle inspired prints and eclectic use of colour, he was the first Japanese designer to gain prominence on the Paris fashion scene.

He settled in France in the 1960s and spent the rest of his career there.

With his "nearly 8,000 designs", the Japanese designer "never stopped celebrating fashion and the art of living", his spokesman said.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo paid tribute to him on Twitter: "Designer of immense talent, he had given colour and light their place in fashion. Paris is now mourning one of its sons."

"I was a fan of the brand in the 1970s when he started. I think he was a great designer," fashion news website WWD.com quoted Sidney Toledano, CEO of luxury conglomerate LVMH which owns the Kenzo brand, as saying.

Many Japanese Twitter users posted their condolences on the platform, some of whom shared that their first ever luxury product was one from Kenzo.

"The first wallet I ever owned was from Kenzo," said one Twitter user. "Even though it's a small thing - I'll always remember it. Rest in Peace."

"I have a Kenzo [outfit] passed down from my mum," said another. "I still wear it."

Many others said they owned Kenzo handkerchiefs - an accessory which is still popular in Japan

Born in 1939 in Himeji, Kenzo Takada arrived in France in 1965 by boat and settled in Paris.

He founded the internationally known brand under his first name in the 1970s. He launched a men's line in 1983, and later in the 1980s the more casual sportswear lines Kenzo Jeans and Kenzo Jungle.

He sold his clothing brand to luxury conglomerate LVMH in 1993 and retired from fashion six years later.
