Police in the northern city of Oldenburg “were able to arrest the alleged operator of the suspected world’s largest illegal marketplace on the darknet, the DarkMarket, at the weekend,” prosecutors said in a statement.“

Investigators were able to shut down the marketplace and turn off the server on Monday,” they added, calling it the culmination of a months-long international law enforcement operation.

A total of at least 320,000 transactions were carried out via the marketplace, with more than 4,650 bitcoin and 12,800 monero – two of the most common cryptocurrencies – changing hands, prosecutors said.

At current exchange rates, that represented turnover valued at €140m (A$220m).

The marketplace offered for sale “all kinds of drugs” as well as “counterfeit money, stolen and fake credit card data, anonymous Sim cards, malware and much more”.

A 34-year-old Australian national believed to be the DarkMarket operator was arrested near the German-Danish border, just as more than 20 servers it used in Moldova and Ukraine were seized.

“Investigators expect to use the data saved there to launch new probes against the moderators, sellers and buyers of the marketplace,” prosecutors said.

The prime suspect was brought before a judge but declined to speak. He was placed in pre-trial detention.

The German prosecutors said DarkMarket came to light in the course of major investigation against the web-hosting service Cyberbunker, located in a former Nato bunker in south-western Germany.

Three Dutchmen, three Germans and a Bulgarian are believed to have provided the infrastructure for illegal online activities before they were arrested in September 2019. They have been on trial since last October in the German city of Trier.

The secret “darknet“ includes websites that can be accessed only with specific software or authorisations, ensuring anonymity for users.

Up to 1.3 million immigrants have left the UK – the largest population fall since the Second World War – with coronavirus the likely cause, a study says.

In London alone, almost 700,000 foreign-born residents are believed to have moved out, leading to a potential 8 per cent shrinking of the size of the capital, it argues.

The study, by the government-funded Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE), draws a clear link with the devastation inflicted by the pandemic on sectors such as hospitality.

“It seems that much of the burden of job losses during the pandemic has fallen on non-UK workers and that has manifested itself in return migration, rather than unemployment,” the authors concluded.

“If this is even close to being accurate, this is the largest fall since World War II,” they added.

Brexit is not being pinpointed as a cause of the sharp decline, but could yet have implications for filling jobs when the economic recovery comes.

Under the harsher immigration rules, EU nationals would need work visas to return and work in Britain unless they have been granted ‘settled status’.

Furthermore, large changes in regional populations could make it more difficult for the NHS to distribute Covid-19 vaccines fairly around the UK.

The study examined the population change between the third quarter of 2019 and the same period in 2020, using labour data.

It rejected data published by the Office for National Statistics – finding a 500,000 drop, with employment of UK-born people in London rising – as “hardly plausible”.

The authors of the study, Michael O’Connor and Jonathan Portes, blamed those shortcomings on the difficulties in counting migration during the pandemic.

With officials unable to collect data in the usual way at airports and other transport hubs because of the pandemic, the ONS has acknowledged severe difficulties in measuring migration numbers.

Mr Portes, professor of economics at King's College London, said Brexit might have had an impact “at the margin”, warning that effect might grow.

“The effects we describe here occur very specifically in 2020 Q1 to Q3, and are visible for both EU and non-EU migrants,” he tweeted.

But he added: “In 2021, interaction of Brexit, Covid-19, economic recovery, and new system is unpredictable.”

Dutch Rutte government resigns over child welfare fraud scandal

The Dutch government has stepped down after thousands of families were wrongly accused of child welfare fraud and told to pay money back.

Families suffered an "unparalleled wrong", MPs decided, with tax officials, politicians, judges and civil servants leaving them powerless.

Many of those affected were from an immigrant background and hundreds were plunged into financial difficulty.

PM Mark Rutte submitted the cabinet's resignation to the king.

"Innocent people have been criminalised and their lives ruined," he then told reporters, adding that responsibility for what had gone wrong lay with the cabinet. "The buck stops here."

The "unanimous" decision, taken at a cabinet meeting in The Hague, comes at a key moment in the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Netherlands has gone into lockdown and ministers have been considering stiffer measures to halt the spread of infection.

The government will stay on in a caretaker role to tackle the pandemic until parliamentary elections in March but Economics Minister Eric Wiebes has quit with immediate effect for his role in the scandal. Asked whether the cabinet's resignation was merely symbolic, Mr Rutte was adamant that it was not.

This is not the first time a Dutch government has resigned en masse in a gesture of collective responsibility. In 2002, the cabinet stood down after a report criticised ministers and the military for failing to prevent the massacre of Muslims at Srebrenica during the Bosnian war seven years earlier.

Chuyện chính trị Hoa Kỳ đã có bà Pelosi và đoàn Vệ Binh Quốc gia lo. Chuyện chính trị Việt Nam và Trung Cộng đã có Trump lo . Hôm nay mình có vài lời về chuyện chính trị Hòa Lan.

Cách đây vài giờ Thủ Tướng Mark Rutte đã tuyên bố toàn bộ nội các Rutte III sẽ bị giải tán vào ngày 15 tháng 1 năm 2021, tức hôm nay. Đơn từ chức đã gởi sang cho vua Willem Alexander để chờ chấp thuận. Trước đó bộ trưởng Bộ Kinh Tế và Khí Hậu cũng đã từ chức và và cựu bộ trưởng Bộ Xã Hội cũng đã tự chấm dứt vai trò lãnh đạo đảng PvdA (trung tả).

Điều gì đã dẫn đến một kết thúc bất ngờ, "đầy kịch tính" so với tình hình chính trị Hòa Lan, vốn dĩ chuyên trọng sự an lạc thái bình của tòan dân và việc đối phó với đại dịch vẫn còn đang mang ưu tiên số một?

Số là từ năm 2013 đến 2019 khoảng 20.000 phụ huynh có gốc gác di dân bị Cơ quan Thuế vụ theo dõi, truy lùng và trừng phạt nghiêm ngặt vì bị vu khống tội gian lận tiền trợ cấp giữ trẻ em.

Từ năm 2019 số phụ huynh này đã hợp sức lại đưa vụ việc này ra ánh sáng. Những đơn kiện chính phủ đã làm rúng động cả nước.

Một Ủy ban khảo sát được thành lập và đã cho ra đời bản cáo trạng, kết luận chính phủ Rutte I và II đã vi phạm “các nguyên tắc cơ bản của nhà nước pháp quyền” vì đối xử kỳ thị với những người Hòa Lan có gốc di dân.

Mặc dầu chỉ còn hai tháng nữa là công dân ở đây được đi bầu theo chu kỳ 4 năm, chính phủ Rutte trong gần ba nhiệm kỳ này cũng đã phải chấm dứt. Theo thể lệ, nội các Rutte III sẽ trở thành chính phủ lâm thời trong khi chờ đợi kết quả bầu cử mới.

Mặc dầu lỗi lầm không do thủ tướng và các bộ trưởng trực tiếp gây nên, nhưng cả nội các vẫn phải chịu toàn bộ trách nhiệm trong vài trò kiểm soát cẩu thả những người thi hành luật lệ.

Mark Rutte (1967) sinh tại The Hague, là một chính trị gia và được dân bầu lên làm thủ tướng từ năm 2010 cho đến hôm nay, tại vị gần 3 nhiệm kỳ liên tục. Ông cũng là nhà lãnh đạo đảng VVD thuộc hướng trung hữu.

Tuần vừa rồi ông còn lên truyền hình để xin lỗi toàn dân vì những quyết định sai lầm hay chậm chạp trong việc ứng phó nạn đại dịch. Tuy vậy cách vận hành, truyền tải thông tin trong sáng và mạch lạc của ông trong suốt mùa Covid-19 đã được các cánh tả lẫn hữu nể phục và trong đó có tôi!

Nhiều người tin rằng ông vẫn còn cơ hội trở lại chính trường trong vai trò thủ tướng của nội các Rutte IV.
