Angela Merkel rejects Trump's G7 summit invite

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has reportedly refused Donald Trump's invite to attend a G7 summit in Washington. The US president is pushing for an in-person event as member countries ease coronavirus restrictions.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will not travel to Washington at US President Donald Trump's request to attend the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Washington DC, according to a report from Politico on Friday.

"The federal chancellor thanks President Trump for his invitation to the G7 summit at the end of June in Washington," German government spokesman Steffen Seibert told the outlet.

"As of today, considering the overall pandemic situation, she cannot agree to her personal participation, to a journey to Washington," Seibert said.

Trump has been rallying behind the idea of hosting a G7 summit in person, months after the March event was canceled amid coronavirus fears. He has received support from UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who said that the meeting of world leaders should be held in person "if possible."

Even as economies start to open across the world, Merkel has warned that June may be too early for large gatherings to take place. Social distancing and strict vigilance have been recommended even as lockdown restrictions are eased in many parts of the world.

"She will of course continue to monitor the development of the pandemic," Seibert said.

The US has recorded close to 1.75 million cases of the virus. Germany's tally stands at approximately 183,000 confirmed cases. The US death toll has crossed 100,000, while Germany has recorded over 8,500 deaths.

North Korean embassy hostel in Berlin locks its doors

After more than a year of legal disputes, a hostel on the grounds of the North Korean embassy has closed for good. Non-diplomatic use and foreign income generated for Pyongyang was considered a breach of sanctions.

A hostel situated on the grounds of the North Korean embassy in Berlin has been shut down for good after a German court ruled that it breached international sanctions aimed at stopping financial flows to Pyongyang, a city official said on Friday.

Stephan von Dassel – head of the central district that hosts the North Korean embassy – told the German Press Agency (DPA) that a Berlin administrative court had rejected the hostel's final appeal against closure. The court ruled earlier on Tuesday that the hostel must shut down all operations.

"For us, the legal case is closed," von Dassel said.

    Popular with backpackers

The embassy — a legacy of the Cold War when North Korea retained diplomatic ties with Communist East Germany – has continued to operate since German reunification in 1990.

The embassy was closed after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but it reopened in 2001 and officials set about sub-letting rooms and parking spaces at the site.

One of its buildings was converted into a budget hostel which became popular with backpackers.

The hostel was said to have been an important source of foreign income for North Korea.

    Violation of sanctions

The hostel's operators reportedly leased the premises from the embassy for €38,000 ($42,000) per month under a contract agreed in 2016.

According to the Berlin court ruling, this breached United Nations sanctions and a European Union (EU) directive intended to stop the flow of hard currency to North Korea.

The UN explicitly banned such leasing arrangements by North Korean embassies globally as part the UN Security Council Resolution 2321 — passed in November 2016 after Pyongyang's fifth nuclear test.

In November 2018, Berlin city authorities prohibited the hostel operator from using the property, citing an EU directive implementing the UN sanctions.

In a bid to stop the closure, the unnamed operators claimed they stopped paying rent to the embassy in April 2017 and that Berlin city authorities did not have the competency to order the hostel to be closed.

However, in January the court rejected their bid on the back of an EU directive that forbids any use of North Korean territory other than for diplomatic or consular purposes.

According to von Dassel, the appeal of that decision was rejected Thursday.

U.S. Charges Dozens of North Koreans in $2.5 Billion Scheme to Evade Sanctions: DOJ
    https://www.thedailybeast.com/us-cha...vade-sanctions
U.S. prosecutors have charged 28 North Koreans and five Chinese nationals in the vast money laundering scheme allegedly led by the Foreign Trade Bank, which was sanctioned in 2013 and barred from making any transactions with U.S. entities. The 33 agents allegedly used “over 250 front companies” around the world to evade sanctions and illegally process payments “transited through the United States,” the indictment reads.
    https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/28/polit...ing/index.html
The indictment says the Pyongyang-based bank dispatched the defendants to countries including Russia, China, Thailand, Libya, Austria and Kuwait, where they took up residence and operated the new, secret branches, as well as more than 250 front companies. From there, prosecutors say, they worked with "third-party financial facilitators to procure commodities and facilitate payments in US dollars on behalf of parties in North Korea."

"The defendants and other co-conspirators concealed (Foreign Trade Bank) involvement in US dollar payments from Correspondent Banks in order to trick the banks into processing payments that the banks otherwise would not have done," the indictment says.

Germany 'shocked' by George Floyd killing, calls for end to violence

Germany's government has commented on the ongoing protests in the United States, saying societies around the world need to address racism, and that Berlin believes in the strength of US democracy in overcoming unrest.

As widespread protests continued in dozens of US cities over the police killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, a German government spokesperson on Wednesday said Germany was "shocked" by the "horrific and avoidable" death, adding that societies around the world need to do more to address racism.

"Racism is certainly not an American problem, rather a problem in many societies, and I am sure that there is also racism in Germany," the spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Steffen Seibert, told a press conference in Berlin.

"Every society, including ours, is called upon to continually work against this," he added.

On May 25, George Floyd was killed after a confrontation with police in the northern city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, during which an officer kneeled on his neck for several minutes.

The officer has since been charged with murder, and the incident has sparked violent clashes in multiple cities between police and protesters, who have taken to the streets to call for an end to police brutality and racism.

    American democracy is 'strong'

Seibert said the German government is closely following the ongoing unrest in the US with "sympathy" and hopes that violence will end soon, as Germany has a close, long-standing relationship with the US.

He added that Germany was confident that the democratic values in the US and the "rule of law" would prevail.

"America is a strong democracy," Seibert said, adding that there is a vocal and pluralistic debate in US media about racism, police brutality, and the ensuing protests.

"It goes without us saying that there is a heated debate over everything that is happening now."

Record number of Britons becoming German citizens

More British migrants became naturalized German citizens in 2019 than in the previous two years combined. The total number of people becoming naturalized German citizens is at its highest since 2003.

The number of people who became naturalized German citizens increased by 15% in 2019, with more than average coming from the UK, according to new naturalization statistics released Wednesday by Germany's Statistical Office.

Out of the 128,900 people who obtained German citizenship in 2019, the most came from Turkey at 16,200, followed by the United Kingdom at 14,600, Poland at 6,000 and Romania at 5,800.

In 2019, people from 183 countries became naturalized German citizens, and the 2019 naturalization number is at its highest since the 2003 tally of 140,700 people.

    The Brexit effect?

According to the statistics, the number of British becoming German citizens has steadily increased since the Brexit referendum in 2016. In 2015, there were only around 600 cases.

The number of Brits becoming naturalized in 2019 is more than 2017 and 2018 combined.

However, the statistics don't indicate that this group left Britain for Germany due to Brexit, as more than half of the migrants have lived in Germany for over 25 years.

Most of the new British-Germans also decided to keep their British citizenship alongside German, and half of them were over 50 years old, with the oldest aged over 90.

Boris Johnson lays out visa offer to nearly 3m Hong Kong citizens

Boris Johnson has opened the path to what he called one of the “biggest changes” to the British visa system, stating he was ready to offer a right to live and work in the UK to any of the nearly 3 million Hong Kong citizens eligible for a British National Overseas passport.

Ministers have been ambivalent since last Thursday on whether the UK government’s offer of an extendable 12-month visa would be available only to the 350,000 current BNO passport holders in Hong Kong, or would also include the more than 2.5 million eligible to apply for the passport.

Berlin. Rally against racism in the center

At a rally against racism in central Berlin, the participants were silent for 8 minutes 46 seconds in a row, that is how many policemen used a strangulation against African-American George Floyd. According to police, about 15 thousand people took part in the rally.
