Germany and right-wing extremism: The new dimension of terror

Officials have said a deadly shooting was the result of deep-seated racism, which the suspected perpetrator had posted about online. The attack came hours after the German government approved an online hate speech bill.

A gunman by the name of Tobias B. is thought to have killed nine people and injured at least four in two shisha bars in the city of Hanau, not far from Frankfurt. He then went home where he is suspected of killing his mother before killing himself. He left behind a letter and video in which he claimed responsibility.

Ahead of the attack, he is suspected of having spread racist, xenophobic and anti-Semitic hate speech and conspiracy theories online. Federal prosecutors are now investigating whether he had any contact with other far-right terrorists. Peter Beuth, the interior minister of the state of Hesse, has said that he was not known to the authorities before.

Germany prepares for reprisal attacks after Hanau shootings

German police say they are expecting attacks by far-left groups and cannot rule out a violent reaction from the radical Islamist scene. Politicians are also calling for gun ownership rules to be tightened.

    "....
Security forces in Germany are preparing for possible reprisal attacks in the wake of this week far-right shootings in Hanau, one of the country's biggest media outlets reported on Saturday.

The Funke media group cited terrorism investigators as saying that revenge violence by left-wing extremists is now likely, as well as attacks on representatives of the far-right Alternatíve for Germany (AfD) party.

A German man has driven a vehicle into a crowd of Carnival revelers, injuring dozens of people, a third of them children. Authorities have arrested the main suspect, saying the incident was likely a "deliberate act."

There’s a fly in my waffle! Scientists experiment with larva fat to replace butter
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...e-butter-cakes

Scientists at Ghent University in Belgium are experimenting with larva fat to replace butter in waffles, cakes and cookies, saying using grease from insects is more sustainable than dairy produce.

The researchers soak black soldier fly larvae in a bowl of water, put it in a blender to create a smooth greyish dollop and then use a kitchen centrifuge to separate out insect butter.

“There are several positive things about using insect ingredients,” said Daylan Tzompa Sosa, who oversees the research.

“They are more sustainable because [insects] use less land [than cattle], they are more efficient at converting feed … and they also use less water to produce butter,” Tzompa Sosa said as she held out a freshly baked insect butter cake.

According to the researchers, consumers notice no difference when a quarter of the milk butter in a cake is replaced with larva fat.
However, they report an unusual taste when it gets to 50-50 and say they would not want to buy the cake.

    Insect food has high level
s of protein, vitamins, fibre and minerals and scientists elsewhere in Europe are looking at it as a more environmentally friendly and cheap alternative to other types of animal products.

Politician apologizes for saying coronavirus caused by Chinese people eating ‘live mice’
    https://nypost.com/2020/02/29/politi...ing-live-mice/

An Italian politician has apologized for suggesting the coronavirus was caused by poor Chinese hygiene and cultural practices, including eating “live mice.”

Luca Zaia, the governor of Veneto, made the remarks in a local television interview.

“The hygiene that our people, the Venetians and the Italian citizens have, the cultural training we have, is that of taking a shower, of washing, of washing one’s hands often,” Zaia told Antenna 3-Nord Est TV, Reuters reported.

“It is a cultural fact that China has paid a big price for this epidemic because we have seen them all eat mice live or things like that,” he said.
