Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ: Sẽ trả đũa nếu bị Mỹ trừng phạt về việc mua hỏa tiễn S-400
    July 22, 2019

(V.Giang)

    Opinion:
Germany's silence on racist Wächtersbach attack

On Monday, a black man was shot by a white German in Hesse. But, instead of mass outrage over the racist attack, many people seem more concerned over changes to kindergarten menus, DW's Christoph Strack writes

Judging by this week's outcry, one might have thought that the end of the world as Germans know it was nigh. Two kindergartens in the city of Leipzig, in the state of Saxony, had announced that they would no longer be serving pork or gummy bears, which contain gelatin, which is derived from the collagen of pigs, out of respect for Muslim students. The mass-circulation newspaper Bild made this its lead story, and, mere hours after the news broke, police forces had to be dispatched to protect the kindergartens. The vitriol was heavy online, as well. Many in Germany apparently thought this signaled the imminent demise of democracy and liberty. And all this, in their view, was to blame Islam. The internet was awash with unsavory comments, and "pork" began trending on social media.

The president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, got involved in debate, too. "The last thing we need is hatred against a minority just because a kindergarten is rethinking its meal plan," he said. "A pork ban would have gone too far," he added. But he left it at that, and called for calm rather than "heated debate."

Of apparently less alarm, a white German shot and seriously wounded an Eritrean man in the small town of Wächtersbach, in the state of Hesse, earlier this week. The man had been driving in a car and did not know his 26-year-old victim, a father who survived thanks to the swift help of emergency workers. It was a despicable, deeply racist attack. It is utterly unsettling.

Politicians were slow to respond. Even those who had expressed quick outrage about the kindergartens in Leipzig took little notice of the racially motivated murder attempt in Wächtersbach. The attack did not draw much attention on social media, either. It is plain to see that Germans are more inclined to feel hatred and outrage rather than to empathize with others and demand the protection of basic human rights.

    Cause for alarm

This does not bode well for Germany and its people. When a neo-Nazi was arrested on suspicion of murdering Walter Lübcke, an elected official in Kassel and member of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) was murdered by a right-wing extremist, in early June, lawmakers and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for vigilance. And politicians are increasingly expressing concern that our democracy and societal cohesion could be in jeopardy. It is the internet, however, where hate speech and group-focused enmity are ubiquitous. Thankfully, in recent weeks the German judiciary has begun stepping up its efforts to go after individuals who publish criminal content. Alas, Facebook and Twitter are not doing enough in this regard, so German and European lawmakers will have to keep up their pressure on both platforms.

The German gun freak had repeatedly announced his plan to commit an attack at his local pub. But nobody took him seriously and raised the alarm. This, too, is a tragedy.

Every attack inspires copycats. Schuster, of the Central Council of Jews, is right when he says Germans must refrain from "hate speech against minorities." The country's societal cohesion is at stake. We can also play our part by being vigilant and reporting criminal hate speech online and by attending demonstrations for human dignity, democracy and equality.

Schalke chairman under pressure to resign over racist comments

Speaking at a public meeting with 1,600 guests in Paderborn, the 63-year-old criticised tax increases designed to help to fight climate change and then suggested the money would be better used financing 20 power plants a year in Africa.

“Then the Africans would stop cutting down trees, and they would stop making babies when it gets dark,” Tönnies has been quoted as saying – a statement which later prompted an apology.

France responds to Trump criticism, free to speak on Iran

PARIS (AP) — France said Friday it doesn’t need authorization to speak out on Iran issues, in a response to criticism by President Donald Trump.

Trump tweeted Thursday that people purporting to represent the U.S., including French President Emmanuel Macron, are giving Iran “mixed signals.”

He added that he knows Macron means well, but that “no one is authorized in any way, shape, or form, to represent us!”

In a written statement Friday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said France “speaks with total sovereignty” and is committed to try to de-escalate tensions in the Persian Gulf region.

“France commits strongly to peace and security in the region, and commits to enabling de-escalation. France requires no authorization to do so,” he said.

Macron has taken a lead role in trying to save the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which has been unraveling since Trump pulled the U.S. out of the agreement.

Macron “is of course keeping the U.S. authorities informed” of his diplomatic efforts, Le Drian said.

Norway mosque shooting suspect appears in court

The 21-year old man is suspected of opening fire in a mosque and breaching anti-terror laws. He has pleaded not guilty and refused to be interrogated by authorities.

A man held by Norwegian authorities as a suspect in the shooting at the al-Noor Islamic Centre, outside of Oslo, appeared in court on Monday. The 21-year-old is also suspected to have murdered his 17-year-old stepsister.

No one was killed and one person was injured in the attack. Only three people were present at the house of worship when the suspect opened fire and one of the congregants was able to overpower him until police arrived.

"He is exercising his right not to be interrogated," his defense attorney, Unni Fries, told Reuters. "He is not admitting any guilt."

The suspect is said to have held far-right and anti-immigrant views , police said on Sunday.

The 21-year-old will remain in pre-trial detention for four weeks, after the court granted a request from prosecutors.

Authorities were seeking to hold him on suspicion of murder and for breaching anti-terrorism law by spreading severe fear among the population.

"The investigation is still in an early phase and the suspect has not made any statements to the police," police said in a statement.

If he is found guilty of breaching anti-terrorism laws or for the killing of his stepsister, he would be facing up to 21 years in prison.
