The case related tocomments posted or reposted on X, including criticism of a decision to hand a contract for manufacturing Covid-19 vaccines to a company owned by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

One of the posts accused the government of using the Covid vaccine distribution to boost the monarchy’s image, which the court considered defamation, according to a report by Reuters. The court also accused her of showing “great malice” towards the king for sharing a separate, graphically worded post, Reuters reported.

By early December, the air quality in the city had grown so bad that schools, markets and parks were closed for four days. By last weekend, the city’s air quality index (AQI) had reached levels considered extremely hazardous to health.

To try to reduce them, on Saturday the Punjab government used cloud seeding to create rain in 10 locations around the city using a small Cessna plane.

To create the clouds, there needs to be enough moisture already present in the clouds in the lower atmosphere. In summer, common table salt mixed with water is sprayed over the cloud patches from planes. After a few hours, the mist integrates with the clouds and produces rain. In winter, the clouds are seeded using flakes of silver iodide, which can be fired from a vehicle or a plane.

The victory of Lai, who since 2020 had served as vice-president to Tsai Ing-wen, marks the continuation of a government that promoted a sovereign Taiwan and a national identity separate to China, and oversaw some of the deepest cross-strait tensions in decades as Beijing pushed towards its goal of annexation.

Taiwan is a relatively young democracy, emerging from decades of authoritarian rule in the late 1980s and holding its first entirely free elections in the mid-1990s. The freedoms of voting – in stark and conspicuous contrast to those denied in China – are a point of pride and enthusiasm.

Vivi Lin, a 25-year-old student, travelled back from the UK to cast her ballot in Yilan, a city in northern Taiwan. The plane ticket cost about 40,000 new Taiwan dollars (£1,000). “It was just such a miraculous moment. I voted along with my grandma and grandpa. I’m the first generation of a democratic Taiwan. Growing up, my grandparents and parents were always telling me how precious the freedom and democracy we have right now is.”

For some of the many Americans here, watching this presidential vote, 10 months ahead of their own, was inspiring but also a little painful. The global superpower which for so long has heralded itself as the leader of the democratic world is no longer the best example of it. For Taiwan’s 23.5 million people at the weekend, they proudly held that title.

The campaign was a boisterous, hyperpartisan, chaotic affair that inspired almost 72% of eligible voters to show up at the polls. Many of them also returned at the end of the day to watch the count, an extraordinarily transparent and analogue process involving volunteers holding each paper ballot up and shouting the voter’s choice to another worker who marked it down – in pencil – on an A3 sheet stuck to the wall with sticky tape. Thousands of others gathered outside party headquarters to hear the seats called in real time.

For many voters, regardless of stripe, the biggest takeaway from the election is pride in the system itself. The small democracy won plaudits internationally its robust and transparent vote, despite efforts from China to influence the outcome and in marked contrast to Taiwan’s recent history of authoritarian rule.

The turmoil began with a meeting between Korean-American pastor Choi Jae-young and Kim Keon Hee, the wife of president Yoon Suk Yeol.Choi has a history of engagement with the North and has visited the communist country several times to conduct prayers at Pyongyang’s handful of state-operated churches.

It was during the course of Choi’s second meeting with Kim that he purportedly presented her with a Dior bag valued at 3 million won ($2,240). Both the bag and the concealed camera were provided by the left-leaning news site Voice of Seoul, which is known for its staunch opposition to the Yoon government.

Kim Keon Hee is no stranger to controversy, having weathered a series of allegations, including plagiarism concerning her academic writings, résumé-padding and accusations of stock manipulation.

WCK conducts first airdrop of food into Northern Gaza

World Central Kitchen conducted an airdrop of 500 pallets of food into Northern Gaza. José Andrés, WCK’s founder and Chief Feeding Officer, joined the Jordanian Royal Air Force and the Royal Netherlands Air Force as part of the international effort to complete our first delivery of this kind. Our teams have provided more than 32 million meals in Gaza since first responding to the escalating conflict in the region.

WCK is also running convoys of food to the North, but our teams are only able to get there a limited number of times each week. When our team goes, they take two trucks: one transports meals for hospitals. The other carries food for the crowds of Palestinians the drivers encounter along the route. Masses of people gather around this second truck and distribute the food amongst themselves to take back to their families.

Cooks in our Rafah kitchen are preparing more than 32,000 hot meals and meal kits daily, along with 12,000 pieces of freshly baked bread for Palestinian families.
