The journalist Arnab Ray last week put the question as to whether Modi was a fascist to Google’s generative AI platform, Gemini. He received the answer that Modi was “accused of implementing policies some experts have characterized as fascist”.

Gemini said the reasons for this characterisation were the ruling party’s “Hindu nationalist ideology, its crackdown on dissent and its use of violence against religious minorities”.

When the journalist posted the screenshots on X, another person in the media was so annoyed with Gemini’s answer on Modi that he reposted it and urged the junior information technology minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar to take note of what he described as the “downright malicious” response.

Chandrasekhar promptly accused Google of violating India’s laws on information technology. He wrote on X that the unreliability of AI platforms could not be used as an excuse for them to be considered exempt from Indian laws.

Cambodian prime minister bans musical horns to deter dancing

The Cambodian prime minister, Hun Manet, has ordered a ban on musical vehicle horns after videos posted on social media showed people dancing on roads and roadsides as passing lorries blasted rhythmic little tunes.

He commented on his Facebook page on Monday that recent social media posts had shown “inappropriate activity committed by some people, especially youth and children, dancing on the roadside to the musical sounds from trucks’ horns”.

Hun Manet said such dancing affected public order and posed a traffic hazard that was a threat to life and limb, not least of all to the dancers themselves. One video shows three young people dancing in the middle of a road while a large trailer truck coming their way lays down a beat.

The censoring of jeans is part of a campaign to shield North Koreans from the “malign” influence of western culture that began under the former leader, Kim Jong-il.




In 2022, the US government-funded Radio Free Asia said the regime was cracking down on “capitalist” fashion and hairstyles, targeting skinny jeans and T-shirts bearing foreign words, as well as dyed or long hair, it said.

The ban on jeans does not appear to extend to western tourists, who are permitted to dress as they please when they visit the North.

A convoy of three armoured cars belonging to WCK, which had been spearheading new efforts at creating a maritime corridor from Cyprus for the delivery of desperately needed aid in the face of Israeli bombardment and blockade of land crossings, was attacked on Monday evening while leaving a warehouse in Deir al-Balah, the charity said. Seven people were killed, including Palestinian, UK, Australian and Polish nationals, as well as a US-Canada dual citizen.

The strikes on a team from World Central Kitchen (WCK) led the charity – along with other aid organisations such as Anera, which helps refugees around the Middle East, and the US-based Project Hope, which focuses on healthcare – to announce on Tuesday that it would pause operations in Gaza to protect its staff.

Aid ships organised by WCK arrived in Gaza on Monday carrying 400 tonnes of food and supplies – enough for 1m meals – in a shipment funded by the United Arab Emirates, after a successful pilot run last month.

£52,000 golden teacup stolen from Tokyo department store

A golden teacup worth more than 10m yen (£52,100) has been stolen from a department store in Tokyo after being showcased in an unlocked box.The teacup, made of pure 24-carat gold, went missing from an outlet of the Takashimaya chain, where an array of gold items for sale were being displayed as part of an event.

The stolen teacup was one of the most expensive among more than 1,000 pieces of teaware, tableware and artefacts on display, a spokesperson for the retailer told Agence France-Presse.

Security footage showed a man stowing the cup in his bag before fleeing, local media reported. Police are investigating.
