John Cena ‘very sorry’ for saying Taiwan is a country

On Tuesday, Cena apologised for calling Taiwan “a country” in an interview he gave to a Taiwanese broadcaster early this month, saying that it was not appropriate.

“I made a mistake, I must say right now. It’s so so so so so so important, I love and respect Chinese people,” Cena said to his 600,000 fans on his Chinese Weibo account. “I’m very sorry for my mistakes. Sorry. Sorry. I’m really sorry. You have to understand that I love and respect China and Chinese people.”

The controversy began when Cena, early this month, told Taiwanese broadcaster TVBS in Mandarin that: “Taiwan is the first country that can watch F9,” referring to his latest film, Fast & Furious 9.

China is the world’s biggest movie market. Over the weekend, the film – which has yet to be shown in the US – took in at least $135.6m (£96m) in China alone, making it one of the biggest openings for a Hollywood film since the coronavirus pandemic.

In showing the significance of the Chinese market to the film’s producers as well as investors, the lead actor, Vin Diesel, told the state-owned Xinhua news agency that the reason why the film premiered in China a month before North America is because those behind the work see China as their family. “It is a kind of show of gratitude to the family,” he said.

Local government under criticism for running international marriage campaign

The government of Mungyeong City in North Gyeongsang Province is facing criticism from women's and immigrants' rights groups for its campaign aimed at encouraging farmers of Korean nationality in the city to get married to Vietnamese students studying in Korea.

The groups said that such a campaign is clearly racist and discriminatory, not only against a particular country, but also against all immigrant women and international students living in Korea.

The Women Migrant Human Rights Center of Korea said Friday that it had found Mungyeong City's promotional material for the campaign online in mid-April, in which the city government aimed to help male farmers who are older than the usual "marriageable age" get married to Vietnamese students. The city government said that the campaign was designed to help reverse Korea's population decline and the aging of Korean society.

In the material, the city government also asked international marriage brokers to cooperate.

The center claimed that the city government, which is supposed to be tasked with preventing commercial international marriages, has actually encouraged such marriages instead.

It filed a petition with the National Human Rights Commission of Korea against the city government later that day.

"Sixty-three other civic groups, including the Korea Women's Hotline, along with 144 individuals, participated in the submission of the petition," a center official said. "We believe that the Mungyeong city government's campaign violated immigrant women's rights to equality as well as their rights to pursue happiness in Korea."

A Vietnamese student, who participated in a joint press conference held in front of the commission, said that targeting Vietnamese students for marriage was a result of negative stereotypes and prejudices that suggest Vietnamese women come to Korea only to try to get married with Koreans.

"We, the students, holding student visas, are in Korea to receive a high-quality education and pursue our dreams," the student said.

"I sincerely urge the authorities of Mungyeong to withdraw the campaign. Marriage should be the choice of a couple themselves and thus, local governments should not treat a specified group simply as a means to increase the population."

China has announced that couples will be permitted to have up to three children in a major policy shift from the existing two-child limit, after recent data showed a dramatic decline in births in the world’s most populous country.

“To actively respond to the ageing of the population … a couple can have three children,” state media Xinhua reported on Monday, citing a meeting of China’s elite politburo leadership committee hosted by President Xi Jinping.

China’s fertility rate stands at 1.3 – below the level needed to maintain a stable population. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, there were officially 12 million babies born in 2020, 2.65 million fewer than were born in 2019, an 18% fall. Preliminary data released earlier this year, based on registered births, had indicated a year-on-year drop of 15%.

Tiêm chủng COVID tại Việt Nam: Dân lo ngại vaccine Trung Quốc

Đầu tháng này, Bộ Y tế Việt Nam loan báo đang xem xét hồ sơ vaccine Covid do hãng dược Sinopharm của Trung Quốc sản xuất để cấp phép sử dụng khẩn cấp có điều kiện. Thứ trưởng Y tế Trương Quốc Cường chiều 3/6 cho biết tổng số vaccine Việt Nam đặt hàng là khoảng 170 triệu liều và hy vọng từ tháng 8 số lượng vaccine nhập về sẽ nhiều.

Mặc dù ông Cường không đề cập tới vaccine của Trung Quốc, nhưng rất nhiều người dân đã bắt đầu lo lắng về khả năng vaccine Trung Quốc sẽ được đưa vào Việt Nam tiêm chủng rộng rãi trước tình trạng khan hiếm vaccine từ các nước phương Tây do giá thành cao và quá trình đàm phán chậm chạp.

Bà Nguyễn Thanh Hạnh, một cư dân sống tại quận Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, nói với VOA bà ‘rùng mình’ khi nghe tin vaccine Trung Quốc đang được xem xét cấp phép tại Việt Nam bởi xưa nay chưa bao giờ bà tin vào các sản phẩm ‘Made in China’.

“Đồ ăn thức uống vào người thì sau 4 tiếng có thể thải ra hết, chứ đằng này vaccine tiêm vào người thì tôi sợ quá. Tôi đã chuẩn bị sẵn rồi, nếu người ta kêu ra phường tiêm vaccine Trung Quốc thì tôi cho người tiêm ít tiền để họ tiêm xuống đất cho xong, chứ tôi không tiêm,” bà Hạnh thẳng thắn chia sẻ.

Cùng chung suy nghĩ như bà Hạnh, vợ chồng anh Nguyễn Anh Tuấn ở quận Thanh Xuân, Hà Nội, cho biết họ hy vọng Việt Nam sẽ không nhập vaccine từ Trung Quốc, mà ít ra cũng phải là vaccine Sputnik V từ Nga.

“Lúc đó vợ chồng em sẽ để mọi người tiêm trước, mình thì tìm cách chưa tiêm vội. Cứ từ từ xem hiệu quả và liệu có nguy hiểm gì không đã,’ chị Nguyễn Thu Huyền, vợ anh Tuấn, nói về cách đối phó riêng nếu vaccine Trung Quốc được nhập về sử dụng đại trà.

Tâm lý lo lắng này, theo tìm hiểu của VOA, xuất phát từ thực tế rằng bao lâu nay, Việt Nam đã phải ‘trả giá đắt’ vì các sản phẩm chất lượng kém ‘Made in China’, từ hàng tiêu dùng, thực phẩm hoa quả, cho tới các công trình xây dựng được thực hiện bởi các nhà thầu Trung Quốc.

Trong khi đó, cũng có một số người khác cho rằng giải pháp sử dụng vaccine Trung Quốc để dập dịch cũng có thể hợp lý vào thời điểm này, với tâm thế ‘có còn hơn không’ trong khi khó tiếp cận với vaccine chất lượng cao từ Mỹ và Tây phương.

Anh Nguyễn Hoàng Liêm, một kỹ thuật viên lâu năm trong lĩnh vực nhập khẩu thiết bị y tế và dược phẩm tại Hà Nội, cho VOA biết anh sẽ ‘xung phong’ tiêm lô vaccine đầu tiên nhập khẩu từ Trung Quốc, nếu có, trong thời gian tới.

“Thực tế vaccine Tàu cũng được, quan trọng là nó bán cho mình hàng chuẩn. Chỉ sợ là chỉ được lô đầu tiên thôi. Việt Nam hay thích hàng rẻ, mà rẻ thì Tàu nó kiểu gì nó cũng cung cấp cho, nhưng chất lượng không đảm bảo. Từ xưa đến nay vẫn thế mà. Lô đầu tiên thì chắc là chất lượng sẽ ổn và tiêm thì cũng không sao đâu,” anh Liêm bày tỏ.
