    Nóng kỷ lục: 44,1°C

Vietnam reports record-high temperature, mercury hits 44.1°C in northern province

HANOI: Vietnam has reported a record-high temperature, with climate experts warning such extreme weather events would continue.

The country's scientists have warned that global warming is exacerbating adverse weather, with the region sweltering under a heatwave in April - when neighbouring countries also registered record temperatures.

A temperature of 44.1 degrees Celcius was measured in Vietnam on Saturday (May 6), the National Centre for Hydro Meteorological Forecasting said, breaking the 2019 record of 43.4 degrees Celsius.

Farmer Nguyen Thi Lan told AFP that temperatures in the central city of Danang had been increasingly hot, forcing workers to start earlier than ever.

"We have had to finish before 10am to avoid the heat," she said.

Lan said forecasters said temperatures had risen to nearly 40 degrees Celsius.

"But at lunchtime, I think it was much hotter."

Vietnam's weather varies from north to south, but the entire country is now entering its hottest summer months.

The record temperature of 44.1 degrees Celcius was indoors at Hoi Xuan station in northern Thanh Hoa province. It topped the previous high of 43.4 degrees Celsius, recorded in April 2019 at Huong Khe District in central Ha Tinh Province.

"This is a worrying record in the context of climate change and global warming," climate change expert Nguyen Ngoc Huy told AFP from capital Hanoi.

"I believe this record will be repeated many times," he said. "It confirms that extreme climate models are being proven to be true."

Across the country, weather experts and authorities had warned the population to remain indoors during the hottest parts of the day.

Danang has asked Vietnam's industry and electricity ministries to "cooperate to effectively deal with the heat, possible drought, lack of water", according to state media.

Officials have also told the city's water supply company to ensure that there are adequate "supplies of water for domestic use".

At midday Saturday, Hanoi city centre was almost empty as many remained indoors to avoid the sun.

    INTENSE HEAT

In April, Asian countries sweltered under hot conditions -- posting record or near-record temperatures.

The Thai meteorological department reported a record-equalling 44.6 degrees Celsius in western Tak province, while Myanmar media said a town in the country's east reported decade-highs of 43.8 degrees.

While both countries typically endure a hot period before the rainy season, the intensity of the heat has exceeded previous records.

Further west, the capital of Bangladesh - long dramatically impacted by climate change - recorded its highest temperature since the 1960s.

At the same time, Indian weather authorities said parts of the country were experiencing temperatures roughly three to four degrees above normal.

A recent report from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that "every increment of global warming will intensify multiple and concurrent hazards".

Vietnam to require social media users to verify identity

HANOI, May 8 (Reuters) - Vietnam is preparing to make it mandatory for social media users of both local and foreign platforms to verify their identity in a bid to rein in online scams, state media reported on Monday.

The measure, part of the Telecommunications Law Amendment to be issued by the end of this year, will enable law enforcement agencies to track down offenders using social media to break the law, state-run Voice of Vietnam (VOV) newspaper reported.

"There are times the authorities can identify social media account holders that violate the laws but cannot track them down because those criminals use cross-border applications," VOV cited information deputy minister Nguyen Thanh Lam as saying.

"Unverified accounts, no matter on local or foreign platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, will be dealt with."

According to the report, both individual and organisational users would be subject to the measure. However not all providers currently offer identity verification in Vietnam.

The regulation will need the approval of the country's lawmakers. Details have not been revealed yet.

Vietnam in recent years has issued several regulations together with a cybersecurity law that target foreign social media platforms in a bid to battle disinformation in news and force foreign tech firms to establish representative offices in Vietnam and store data in the country.

Noodle vendor jailed in Vietnam for ‘anti-state propaganda’
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ate-propaganda

In 2021, Peter Lam Bui posted a parody video impersonating Salt Bae – Nusret Gökçe, a Turkish chef who parlayed his meme stardom into high-end eateries – by sprinkling herbs on noodle soup and calling himself “Green Onion Bae”.

But his video came after a clip of a high-ranking Vietnamese official in London tucking into a steak at Gökçe’s Knightsbridge venue went viral in Vietnam. Lam was in trouble within days of uploading his video, and filmed a police visit to his home in the central city of Da Nang.

On Thursday, the former activist, 39, was convicted of spreading anti-state propaganda by a court in Da Nang, lawyer Le Dinh Viet told AFP.

Gần Cộng thì đen, gần đèn thì tối:

Vietnamese cities cut public lighting to save energy amid heatwave
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...nergy-heatwave

Cities in Vietnam are cutting the use of public lighting to save energy as unusually hot temperatures threaten to stretch the country’s power supplies

In the capital, Hanoi, street lights are being turned on 30 minutes later and turned off 30 minutes earlier than usual, the ministry said. Half the street lights along some major thoroughfares and in public parks have been completely turned off.
