George Pell: Trump is a barbarian, but 'in some important ways' he's our barbarian
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...-our-barbarian

Cardinal George Pell has praised Donald Trump’s “splendid” supreme court appointments, but questioned his effort to sow doubt in the integrity of the US presidential election.During the virtual press conference, Pell said Christians had an obligation to bring their values to the public sphere and said Trump had made a “positive contribution” particularly with his three supreme court picks, two of whom are Catholic.

“In other areas, I’m not sure that he’s been sufficiently respectful of the political process and it’s important that people believe they’re getting a fair go,” Pell said. “And if that’s not the case, it needs to be established very, very clearly because it’s no small thing to weaken trust in great public institutions.”

Australia's national anthem to change in attempt to recognise Indigenous history
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...genous-history

The conservative prime minister, Scott Morrison, made the surprise announcement on New Year’s Eve, saying the change would help foster a “spirit of unity” after a year of big challenges.

From 1 January, the second line of Advance Australia Fair will say: “For we are one and free.” This replaces the existing line: “For we are young and free.”

It picks up an idea floated earlier in the year by the New South Wales premier, Gladys Berejiklian, who said the current wording ignored Australia’s “proud First Nations culture” and made some people feel excluded.

Berejiklian’s proposal to change the wording to “one and free” won support from across the political spectrum, including from the federal minister for
Indigenous Australians, Ken Wyatt, and even from the firebrand rightwing One Nation party leader, Pauline Hanson.

The federation of Australia occurred on 1 January 1901 but Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been living on the continent for tens of thousands of years.

Morrison’s predecessor, Turnbull, is among many people who say the British colonisation of Australia in 1788 could
fairly be described as an “invasion”.

Man arrested after axe attack on New Zealand parliament
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...and-parliament

The parliament building, known locally as the Beehive, was attacked before dawn on Wednesday morning, with the lone axeman causing extensive damage to five exterior glass doors leading into the parliament.Police were called to the scene at 5.25am and the man was arrested without incident at 5.35am, a police spokesperson said.

The 31-year-old is due to appear in Wellington district court on Wednesday and has been charged with intentional damage and possession of an offensive weapon.

The motivation behind the attack was unknown.

“The man caused some damage to glass panels but did not attempt to enter the building,” the police spokesperson said.

Attacks on parliament are rare in New Zealand and prime minister Jacinda Ardern and MPs often appear on the grounds, either to make speeches, meet with and acknowledge protestors, or take in some fresh air.

The parliament buildings are located in central Wellington, with many politicians walking and cycling through the streets to work.

In 2019 the climate change minister James Shaw was attacked while walking to parliament house, the first physical assault on a politician in the country in more than a decade.

The incident prompted Ardern to warn that the easy accessibility of politicians in New Zealand should not be taken for granted.

The grounds of parliament are commonly used by locals to eat their lunch or enjoy the sunshine in Wellington’s central business district.

With the recent installation of a playground on parliament grounds, children are also now a common sight.
Motivation là phản đối bầu cử gian lận chứ còn gì nữa.

Australia's political opposition to support Facebook, Google legislation: sources

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia’s political opposition will support proposed legislation that would force Alphabet’s Google and Facebook to pay publishers and broadcasters for content, two sources briefed on the matter said on Tuesday.

The bill, whose prospects are being widely watched around the world, is dependent upon support from the opposition as Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s ruling Liberal party does not have a majority in the country’s upper house.

Lawmakers from Australia’s centre-left Labor party endorsed the bill at a meeting in Canberra on Tuesday, said the sources, who were not authorised to speak to media on the matter and declined to be identified.

The bill is expected to be introduced into parliament this week.

Google and Facebook have pressed Australia to soften the legislation, with senior executives from both companies holding talks with Morrison and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

Google has asked for series of changes, most notably having its new platform, Showcase, covered by the legislation rather than search results generated.

Last month, Reuters said it had signed a deal with Google to be the first global news provider to Google News Showcase. Reuters is owned by news and information provider Thomson Reuters Corp.

Google and a French publishers’ lobby group agreed in January to a copyright framework for the tech firm to pay news publishers for content online, a first for Europe.

New Zealand PM urges Australia to 'do the right thing' over terror suspect's citizenship

WELLINGTON/SYDNEY (Reuters) - New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday accused Australia of abdicating its responsibilities by “unilaterally” cancelling the citizenship of a woman detained in Turkey and accused of having links to the Islamic State.

Turkish authorities on Monday said they had caught three New Zealanders, two children and a 26-year-old woman alleged to be a member of Islamic State, trying to enter Turkey illegally from Syria.

The woman had held New Zealand and Australian citizenships, but the Australian government cancelled her citizenship, Ardern told reporters in Wellington.

The 40-year-old leader said Australia had “abdicated its responsibilities” by unilaterally cancelling the citizenship, forcing New Zealand to shoulder the responsibility for the woman, who has not lived in New Zealand since she was 6.

“New Zealand, frankly, is tired of having Australia exporting its problems,” Ardern said. “If the shoe were on the other foot we would take responsibility, that would be the right thing to do and I ask Australia to do the same.”

Australian Prime Minister Morrison in a news conference in Canberra said: “My job is Australia’s interests. That’s my job. And it’s my job as the Australian Prime Minister to put Australia’s national security interests first. I think all Australians would agree with that.”

He said he was scheduled to speak with Ardern today but added that legislation passed in parliament automatically cancels the citizenship of a dual citizen accused of being engaged in terrorist activities.

The woman’s case has been known to Australian and New Zealand authorities for some time. Ardern said that after Australia stripped her of her citizenship, she told Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison that the decision was wrong.

“I never believed the right response was to simply have a race to revoke people’s citizenships ... they did not act in good faith,” she said.

Ardern said her government has an obligation to its citizens regardless of the circumstances or offences committed, and that decisions would be driven by the fact that two small children “who did not make the choice of being born in a war zone” were involved.

    QAustralia:

Australia became fertile ground for misinformation and QAnon
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...tion-and-qanon

An Essential poll carried out in May last year found a significant number of people – 39% – believed Covid-19 was “engineered and released from a Chinese laboratory in Wuhan”.

A smaller – but consistent – rump of people polled also believed that Microsoft founder Bill Gates had “played a role in the creation and spread of Covid-19” (13%), the virus was “not dangerous and is being used to force people to get vaccines” (13%), and that 5G was being used to spread the virus (12%).

Underpinning much of the spread of conspiracy theories and misinformation in the US has been the dramatic rise of QAnon, a cult-like movement that claims without any evidence that during his presidency Donald Trump had secretly worked to thwart a cabal of elites made up of Democrats, Hollywood celebrities and billionaires who run the world while engaging in paedophilia, human trafficking and ritualistic child sacrifice.

Studies have shown that Australians are also among the theory’s largest proponents. Last year the Institute for Strategic Dialogue released a report that found QAnon’s following had grown considerably in Australia during 2020, with Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter driving increased engagement.

The report found Australia was the fourth largest country for QAnon activity, behind the US, UK and Canada. Its presence in Australia is also evident on less mainstream sites. For example as Canadian QAnon research Marc-Andre Argentino has pointed out, there were at least six Australian Q “research boards” on the site 8kun with about 4,000 posts by January last year. That had increased to 11 boards by the start of 2021.
