Australia calls for release of 3.1 million vaccine doses, if EU not blocking exports

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia said on Wednesday it will ask the European Union to release more than 3 million doses of AstraZeneca PLC’s COVID-19 vaccine, testing Brussels claim it is not blocking shipments, as the country struggles to vaccinate its population.

The European Union (EU) on Tuesday denied blocking vaccine shipments to Australia, which has fallen dramatically behind in its scheduled vaccination programme.

The EU said it was not responsible for AstraZeneca’s failure to uphold commitments to other countries. AstraZeneca did not immediately reply to a request for comment on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australia was asked by the EU to withdraw export permit applications and letters requesting supplies have gone unanswered.

Morrison said if the EU was now indicating its willingness to release shipments, he would again ask for the 3.1 million doses to be released. The 3.1 million doses were scheduled to arrive in Australia by the end of March.

“We obviously want those millions of doses,” Morrison told reporters in the capital Canberra.

“Given statements made overnight, that apparently there is no obstruction to that and then I would hope that could be readily addressed.”

Morrison on Wednesday insisted he was not criticising the EU, but senior members of his government continued to blame the EU for blocking vaccines.

“They’re not giving approval is effectively the same as blocking,” Australia’s Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio.

Australia says the delay in receiving the 3.1 million additional doses is why it has fallen behind in vaccinations.Only about 670,000 people have been vaccinated against an initial government target of 4 million by March-end.

Australia has recorded a small number of COVID cases compared to most nations and has now eradicated the virus from its community, but its slow vaccine roll out is pressuring Morrison who is struggling in the polls a year out from the next election after a series of damaging allegations about the mistreatment of female lawmakers and staff in his Liberal party.

THE STRUGGLE TO VACCINATE

The dispute between Australia and the EU emphasises the challenge facing European nations which are struggling to vaccinate their own populations and the impact of new EU vaccine export controls on countries that had pre-ordered doses.

Australia received an initial shipment of 300,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine in late February, which it said was the last it received. Last month the EU, at Italy’s request, blocked a shipment of 250,000 doses of the AstraZeneca PLC vaccine to Australia, citing vaccine shortages in Europe.

The AstraZeneca vaccine from Europe was to underpin the early stages of Australia’s vaccine drive, supplementing 50 million shots of the vaccine that will be produced locally by CSL Ltd. It has also imported doses of Pfizer Inc’s vaccine for frontline COVID workers.

Australia has recorded just over 29,000 cases and 909 deaths since the pandemic began.

And he's given the Rydges hotel staff a laugh by asking that Russell be taken for walks.

“It’s been cheering everyone up,” he said. “The hotel staff, they’re in hospitality but they have all these guests that they can’t see or interact with.”

Marriott said he's been making props his whole life. Even when he was a kid he used to get in trouble for breaking his dad's tools.

And when he leaves on Saturday, he's hoping to take Russell and his other creations with him. He said there had been interest from a film center which wants Russell in an art show.

“He's a bit of superstar now,” Marriott said.

Over the past 15 years, the rural community of Wollar in New South Wales’s central west has been slowly eaten by a massive coalmine run by US-based Peabody.

Peabody’s Wilpinjong mine has bought up the area – from land and homes to churches – and now all but one house in the town is owned by the miner.

That house is owned by 68-year-old Col Faulkner, who moved there 38 years ago after he “got the shits with Sydney”.

He feels comfortable in Wollar. He has his fruit trees (apricots, plums and peaches) and a creek at the bottom of the yard with a swimming hole. “Where will I find all that in another place?”

As he talks to the Guardian, noisy friarbirds call out loud. “They’re eating the pink blossom off the ironbark trees,” says Faulkner, who is still the trustee of the unused cricket ground, and treasurer of the community hall.

While families sold up and moved away, Faulkner rebuffed all approaches from Peabody. “I told them I’m not selling and I’m waiting for them to go away and we can repopulate the village.”

Xác Định Danh Tính, Chuẩn Bị Truy Tố Những Tên Du Học Sinh Xé Cờ Vàng Tại Sydney

Theo nguồn tin trên trang FB Vi Manh Tran, danh tính của tên du học sinh Việt Nam xé Cờ Vàng, lăng mạ cộng đồng Việt tị nạn tại trường trung học Marrickville, Sydney, Úc đã được xác nhận. Nghi can Dương Đức Thịnh, là học sinh lớp 3PD English Intensive, tại trường Marrickville, đã chính thức bị cảnh sát bắt mang về đồn cảnh sát Marrickville để thẩm tra. Thịnh và những tên đồng phạm đều bị cấm không được đến trường.

Trên trang FB của hiệp hội Cộng Đồng Người Việt Tự Do NSW đã có thông báo chính thức về sự việc này. Ông Paul Huy Nguyễn, Chủ Tịch CDNVTD NSW cho biết đã gởi thư than phiền đến trường Trung Học Marrickville và Bộ Giáo Dục NSW về đoạn video nhóm du học sinh mặc đồng phục phá hoại cờ vàng. Đến tối ngày 03 tháng 5, 2021, hiệu trưởng trường Trung Học Marrickville đã viết thư trả lời cho biết toàn bộ nhóm học sinh này đã bị đình chỉ học tập ngay lập tức, và chờ thêm các quyết định kỷ luật khác. Trường học khẳng định hành động của nhóm học sinh đã đi ngược lại tinh thần hòa hợp và đoàn kết văn hóa của trường. Trường học cũng đã đưa vụ việc qua lực lượng cảnh sát NSW điều tra và truy tố về hình sự.

Sáng ngày 04 tháng 5, 2021, hiệp hội đã làm việc với cảnh sát NSW. Cảnh sát đã khẳng định họ sẽ xem xét vấn đề một cách nghiêm túc. Chính phủ Úc không chấp nhận các hành vi mang tính bạo động của bất kỳ cá nhân nào. Các cá nhân vi phạm sẽ bị trừng phạt theo đúng luật pháp của Úc, với

tội danh đang xem xét là tội hủy hoại tài sản cá nhân. Cảnh sát cũng điều tra xem đây là hành động của một cá nhân mang tính tự phát, hay được sự ủng hộ của một tổ chức hoặc chính quyền.

CDNVTD NSW khẳng định lập trường chính trị của người Việt tị nạn cộng sản, tuyên bố sẽ làm tất cả những gì có thể để giành lại danh dự cho lá Cờ Vàng và toàn thể cộng đồng người Việt Tự Do tại Úc. (VB)
