The nuclear option: why has Australia ditched the French submarine plan for the Aukus pact?
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...the-aukus-pact

Just two weeks before France complained of being “stabbed in the back”, two senior French ministers met with their Australian counterparts, Marise Payne and Peter Dutton, for what was meant to be a sign of ever-strengthening ties between the two countries.

“Both sides committed to deepen defence industry cooperation and enhance their capability edge in the region,” they said. “Ministers underlined the importance of the future submarine program.”

Then on 15 September the Australian government formally notified the French government – just hours before the official announcement coordinated with Washington and London – that it was tearing up the $90bn contract with France’s Naval Group in favour of a new arrangement with the US and the UK to acquire nuclear-powered submarines.

France is the second close partner of Australia to be burnt by the government’s approach to finding a replacement for the ageing Collins-class submarines.

Tony Abbott had a close working relationship with the Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, and was known to be keen on Japan building Australia’s future submarine fleet.

Instagram displays ad offering fake Covid vaccine certificates in Australia
    https://www.theguardian.com/technolo...s-in-australia

Instagram has displayed an ad promoting fake vaccination certificates in Australia at a time when New South Wales and Victoria are emerging from Covid lockdowns and requiring people to present proof of vaccination.

The ad, a screenshot of which was provided to Guardian Australia by someone who had seen it on Instagram, offered fake digital vaccine certificates that can be loaded into a phone’s digital wallet via the Medicare Express app or myGov account.

The ad appeared in the Instagram Stories feed – where ads appear between photos and videos uploaded by accounts a user follows.

Developer Richard Nelson, who raised concerns in August about the digital certificates by demonstrating they could be faked in 10 minutes, told the Full Story podcast this week that many people had since asked him how to forge theirs. He has declined those requests.

    Vật lý trường thành:

7m wall has gone up on a Sydney beach
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...ivate-property

“We really didn’t want to build a wall,” says Bob Orth. But Orth is one of 10 residents of Collaroy, on Sydney’s northern beaches, who have each paid $300,000 to do just that.

And not just any wall. Construction began in December on a seven-metre-high sheer concrete structure below the residents’ properties, which overlook a beach that has become notorious for dramatic erosion every time there is a big storm.

Collaroy is no stranger to storms – the author Ruth Park sketched a vivid first-hand account of one when she lived in the area in 1945 – and the most famous one hit in 2016, when monster waves swept up the beach and washed away the shore, tearing a private pool from its moorings and leaving houses teetering on the brink.

New Zealand gang leaders unite to urge community to get Covid shots
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...te-covid-shots

Seven New Zealand gang leaders, representing four of the country’s most well-known street gangs, have joined forces in a video urging their communities to get vaccinated, in a concept that was conjured up by a government minister.

In the four-minute video, Denis O’Reilly, who joined the Black Power gang aged 19, says he had “taken a few shots” in his time, including the two shots against Covid-19, and he is asking his community “to do the same”.

    New Zealand: Tân khoai lang

New Zealand potato weighing 7.9kg could claim world record
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...m-world-record

A giant 7.9kg potato found in a New Zealand couple’s overgrown garden may set a new world record for the largest of its kind ever to be discovered.

Colin and Donna Craig-Brown were doing a spot of weeding in their Hamilton back yard, when Colin’s hoe hit something below the ground.

“So I said to Donna this must be one of those white kūmara (sweet potato) that we grew,” he told Stuff, “because some of them just grew massive here.”

The bulbous tuber weighs the same as an extra-large turkey and would exceed the allowance for check-in luggage. The couple named their new discovery Doug, and have grown pretty fond of him.

“We put a hat on him. We put him on Facebook, taking him for a walk, giving him some sunshine,” Colin told the NZ Herald. “It’s all a bit of fun. It’s amazing what entertains people.”
