On Friday, the Department of Justice (DoJ) announced charges against a man accused of bringing guns and molotov cocktails to Washington. Another was reported to have had an assault rifle and ammunition and told friends he planned to shoot Pelosi, the House speaker, or run her over.

In a Saturday lunchtime statement, the US attorney’s office for District of Columbia announced the arrest and charging of three suspects, among them Jacob Anthony Chansley of Arizona, who also goes by the name of Jake Angeli and who was photographed in horned headwear and dressed in fur pelts, in Vice-President Mike Pence’s seat in the Senate chamber.

The 33-year-old self-styled “QAnon shaman”, “entered the Capitol building dressed in horns, a bearskin headdress, red, white and blue face paint, shirtless, and tan pants”, the statement said.

“This individual carried a spear, approximately 6ft in length, with an American flag tied just below the blade,” the attorney’s office said, adding that he was taken into custody on Saturday and charged with “knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds”.

The man seen carrying the speaker’s lectern, Adam Christian Johnson, 36, was booked into Florida’s Pinellas county jail on Friday night on a federal warrant. On Saturday he was charged with “entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; one count of theft of government property; and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds”, prosecutors said. Johnson is expected to be extradited to the capital for a court appearance this week.

Johnson, the US attorney’s office said, “illegally entered the United States Capitol and removed the Speaker of the House’s lectern from where it had been stored on the House side of the Capitol building. A search of open sources led law enforcement to Johnson, who is allegedly seen in a widely circulated photo inside the Capitol carrying the lectern.”

The FBI had been searching for Johnson, after pictures of his role in the riot went viral. The whereabouts of the lectern was not immediately known.

Amazon joins Apple, Google in blocking Parler social app

People banned or censored by other social media use the app. Some took to the platform to coordinate the storming of the Capitol buildings in Washington, DC, last week.


Parler is facing eviction from more and more tech platforms

Amazon has become the latest tech giant to clamp down on microblogging and social network service Parler, notifying it of plans to suspend its web hosting service on Sunday.

Parler poses a "very real risk to public safety," Amazon told Parler in an email.

The suspension will come into effect on Sunday, at 11:59 p.m. PST (0759 UTC Monday). It effectively takes the service offline unless it can find a new company to host its services.

Parler is seen as a haven for people banned or censored by other social media platforms, including right-wing extremists.

Users took to the platform to coordinate the storming of the Capitol buildings in Washington D.C.last Wednesday.

The move follows Apple Inc and Google banning Parler from their app stores on Saturday.

Why are Amazon, Apple, Google targeting the app?

In a letter to Parler first published by Buzzfeed, Amazon told Parler it was suspending its Amazon Web Services (AWS) because it was not acting quickly enough against violent content on the platform.

"We've seen a steady increase in this violent content on your website, all of which violates our terms of service," the letter stated – the contents of which were confirmed to news agencies by Amazon.

Apple Inc accused Parler of not taking "adequate measures to address the proliferation of these threats to people's safety," in a statement, pointing to participants' using the service to coordinate Wednesday's siege of the US Capitol.

It has suspended Parler from the App Store until the platform resolves these issues.

Apple had given Parler 24 hours to submit a detailed moderation plan.

Google pulled Parler from its app store for allowing "egregious content" that could incite deadly violence like that seen at the Capitol.

Attempt to 'kill competition' Parler claims

Parler Chief Executive John Matze lashed out at the moves by Amazon, Google and Apple.

"There is the possibility Parler will be unavailable on internet for up to a week as we rebuild from scratch," he said in a post on Parler.

"This was a coordinated attack by the tech giants to kill competition in the market place... You can expect the war on competition and free speech to continue, but don't count us out."

Trump banned from Twitter

Parler was suspended by the major tech companies, afterTwitter permanently suspended US President Donald Trump's accounton Friday for his role in inciting violence at the Capitol.

Trump responded, saying he will look at building his own social media platform.

New GOP Congressman Says His Colleagues Were Lying

Rep. Peter Meijer (R–MI), the Republican successor to the retiring Libertarian Justin Amash, told Reason he blamed many of his Republican colleagues for the violence at the U.S. Capitol this week because they misled the rioters.

Said Meijer: “They were being lied to. They were being misled. Some of my colleagues in Congress, they share responsibility for that. Many of them were fundraising off of this Stop the Steal grift.”

He added: “I don’t understand how you can look in the mirror and go to sleep at night without that weighing on your conscience, I fundamentally do not. I’m just at a loss for words about how some of them have acted in ways that are just knowingly, provably false. And they know they’re lying, too.”

Canada considers adding Proud Boys to terrorist list alongside Isis and al-Qaida

Canada’s public safety minister said his office was closely watching the Proud Boys and the “ideologically-motivated violent extremists” within the group.

“They are white supremacists, antisemitics, Islamophobic, misogynist groups. They’re all hateful, they’re all dangerous,” the public safety minister, Bill Blair, told CTV News over the weekend. “We’re working very diligently to ensure that where the evidence is available, where we have the intelligence, that we’ll deal appropriately with those organizations.”

The minister’s office has not said when a determination on the group’s status as a terror group will be made.

Calls for a terrorist designation were first made last week by Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic party, who accused the Proud Boys of helping to execute “an act of domestic terrorism” when members of the group stormed the Capitol.

“Their founder is Canadian. They operate in Canada, right now,” tweeted Singh.

The Proud Boys were founded in 2016 by the Canadian Gavin McInnes, a co-founder of Vice magazine. The group first made headlines in Canada three years ago, after five military reservists, dressed in the group’s black and yellow shirts, disrupted a protest by the Indigenous community over a controversial statue.

The group was banned by Facebook and Instagram in October 2018 after violating the platforms’ hate policies and is classified as an extremist organization by the FBI.

In the years since, the group has become a central figure in the violent white supremacist movement in US – and members view Donald Trump as a key ally. During the presidential debates, when Trump was asked to condemn white supremacist groups, he instead told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by”.

A terrorist designation in Canada would mean that the group’s assets could be seized or forfeited by Canadian authorities, although the group is unlikely to have large, hidden assets.

But the follow-on effects could be more significant, said one former intelligence analyst.

“Banks and companies like PayPal will probably not want to do business with anyone who has been outed as being a member of the Proud Boys. These kind of companies are pretty risk averse,” said Jessica Davis, a terrorism expert and former analyst with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

In 2019, the Canadian government added two neo-Nazi groups, Blood & Honour and Combat 18, to its terrorism list – indicating it sees a growing threat from far-right organizations.
