During a Republican forum last Wednesday, Texas congressional candidate and former Trump official Sery Kim made racist remarks about Chinese immigrants. “I don’t want them here at all,” she said. “They steal our intellectual property, they give us coronavirus, they don’t hold themselves accountable.”

These comments are straight out of Trump’s playbook. They’re false, xenophobic, and used for cheap political points. They’re also grotesquely irresponsible at a time when targeted violence against the Asian American community is at a terrifying high, in large part due to rhetoric like this.

Kim justified that rhetoric by adding, “Quite frankly, I can say that because I’m Korean.”

Her speech went viral, and she has since been met with violent, racist messages online. Nobody deserves to be subjected to such treatment, but I cannot say that I’m surprised. Throwing her fellow Asian Americans under the bus did not save her from racism or endear her to white America. In addition to becoming the target of hateful trolls, Kim has been thoroughly criticized by the Korean American community and lost the endorsement of two Republican congresswomen of Korean descent.

We know the difference between critiques of the Chinese government and racist comments about Chinese people, and Kim’s comments at the forum were explicitly about Chinese immigrants. She denigrated Chinese people who come to live here. Her original comments had nothing to do with the CCP, as she now claims. But even if they did, it’s worth examining why she is so fixated on China when our own government failed to adequately address the pandemic, leading to 555,000 preventable deaths, and utterly abandoned us during winter storm Uri, the fallout from which many Texans are still suffering.

ORANGE, California (NV) – Một nữ võ sĩ gốc Á Châu bị kỳ thị trong lúc tập luyện tại một công viên ở Orange County, và cô quay phim lại được cảnh đó.

"I was shocked... I didn't know what to do.. and it slowly escalated in a way where he got close to me and he continued to yell at me for no reason," Sakura Kokumai, a Team USA Karate Olympian, told ABC7 in an interview.

"You're so small," the man is heard is saying in the footage. "I'll f--- your boyfriend up."

"There was no racial slurs at the beginning," Kokumai said, "but as he got into his car he would yell out 'Chinese' and 'Sashimi' and then I was like OK there it is."

It's why she says she was so calm: she knew if she had to, she could fight back. She said the man out of nowhere started harassing her for nearly 20 minutes.

"You know what? If this was my mom... what if this was my grandma...that's where it got scary, because I knew that I was able to handle myself with the situation by being calm," Kokumai said. "You don't want to be aggressive. But my worry was, what if this was somebody else?"

In 2020, there were 10 times as many hate incidents and crimes against Asian Americans in Orange County. A majority of those crimes were in public, according to the Orange County Human Relations Commission.

Just last month, an 82-year-old Asian American woman at the Leisure World retirement community in Seal Beach received a letter on the day of her husband's funeral -- it said his death was a good thing because it meant "one less Asian to put up with."

President Biden urges CEOs to help end chip shortage

US domestic industries are struggling to keep up with demand for computer chips and semiconductors. The White House is offering billions in domestic aid to help boost production.


'This is infrastructure,' Biden told the CEOs, holding up a silicon wafer, a core component in making computer chips, imported in large part from Asia at present

US President Joe Biden told senior executives on Monday that America was suffering from the global computer chip shortage, urging them to invest in domestic production as part of his infrastructure plan.

"We need to build the infrastructure of today, not repair the one of yesterday," Biden told the group of 19 corporate leaders from the technology, chip and automotive industries.

"China and the rest of the world is not waiting and there's no reason why Americans should wait."

Lockdowns produce surge in demand

Carmakers are competing with the consumer electronics industry for chip supplies as people spend more time at home during global coronavirus lockdowns.

The release of a new iPhone has already been delayed, demand for personal computers has surged, and automakers are cutting production owing to a lack of key parts, most notably the semiconductor wafers needed to make computer chips.

The supply crunch could lead to a potential 1.3 million-unit shortfall in U.S. car and light-duty truck production this year.

Broadband internet and cable TV companies also face delays in receiving network switches, routers, and servers.

How much does Biden want to spend on infrastructure?

President Biden said he had bipartisan support for fresh legislation to fund the chip industry — to the tune of $50 billion — as part of his drive to rebuild U.S. manufacturing as part of his $2 trillion infrastructure plan.

Biden and his top advisers view the semiconductor shortage as a "top and immediate priority," the White House said after the meeting.

CEOs of AT&T, Dell, Ford, General Motors, Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler), Intel, Northrop Grumman, and others were all scheduled to attend.

But can the US really shake up supply chains at short notice?

But questions remain over what the Biden administration can really do to shake up US supply chains at such short notice. The industry typically has a production cycle of three to five years.

"Right now, there’s no structural changes that could alleviate the shortage," Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives told the Associated Press.

Intel Corp has said, however, that it will aim to make chips for car plants at its factories in the next six to nine months.

The U.S. has only 12% of the world's semiconductor wafer factory capacity, down from 37% in 1990, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association. China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan combine to account for more than 70%.

“I think now it's just exposing the structural issues as well as some of the potential national security issues the US faces, given our reliance on Asia," Ives said.

Back in 2015, the tech entrepreneur shocked the business world by slashing his own $1.1 million pay package to help fund a minimum “living wage” of $70,000 for all workers at his credit card processing company Gravity Payments.

Price’s decision led to him being heavily criticized as a “socialist” on Fox News and Fox Business. In addition, some clients dropped Gravity for reasons that included fears the salary hike would cause their rates to rise.

But in the years since, Price has been hailed as a success by Harvard Business School and Inc. magazine, which noted the number of employees at Gravity has doubled while the value of payments that the company processes has gone from $3.8 billion a year to $10.2 billion.

On Tuesday, Price referenced this success in a viral Twitter thread and video that took aim at his conservative critics, particularly Fox.
