Grand Old Party, grand old trick. Again.

Ohio House speaker, 4 others arrested in $60M bribery case
    https://www.daytondailynews.com/news...QIKAGwASDYAQE=

The powerful Republican speaker of the Ohio House and four associates have been arrested in a $60 million federal bribery case connected to a taxpayer-funded bailout of Ohio’s two nuclear power plants.

Hours after FBI agents raided Speaker Larry Householder’s farm, U.S. Attorney David DeVillers described the ploy as likely the largest bribery and money-laundering scheme that had "ever been perpetrated against the people of the state of Ohio.”

China orders US to close Chengdu consulate as spying spat worsens

Beijing made the demand in retaliation for the closure of China's Houston consulate earlier this week over alleged Chinese espionage. The move was described as a response to "unreasonable measures" by the United States.

China on Friday ordered the United States to close its consulate in the western city of Chengdu, in retaliation for the closure of China's Houston consulate earlier this week.

The move is a "legitimate and necessary response to the unreasonable measures by the United States," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"The current situation in China-US relations is not what China desires to see, and the US is responsible for all this," the statement said.

The Trump administration on Tuesday ordered the Houston consulate closed within 72 hours, alleging that Chinese agents tried to steal data from facilities in Texas including the Texas A&M medical system.

The US cited Chinese theft of intellectual property, which came a day after the Justice Department unveiled the indictment of two Chinese nationals for allegedly hacking hundreds of companies and attempting to steal coronavirus vaccine research.

"The US move seriously breached international law, the basic norms of international relations, and the terms of the China-US Consular Convention. It gravely harmed China-US relations," China's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Also on Thursday, the US Justice Department said it believes the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco is harboring a Chinese researcher, Tang Juan, who is accused of lying about her background in the Communist Party's military wing on a visa application.

    Chinese shares sink

Meanwhile, Chinese shares sunk over the escalation of tensions, with the Shanghai Composite Index falling 2.25% to 3,250.37 points and the blue-chip CSI300 index falling by 2.99%.

The US has an embassy in Beijing and consulates in Hong Kong and five other mainland cities including Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The Chengdu consulate was established in 1985 and has around 200 staff, with 150 locally hired Chinese staff, according to its website.

Relations between Washington and Beijing have deteriorated sharply over the past two years over a range of issues, from trade and technology to coronavirus, China's territorial claims in the South China Sea and its clampdown on Hong Kong. Earlier this week, the US Commerce Department sanctioned 11 Chinese companies for their connection with Xinjiang human rights abuses and forced labor programs.

The US also recently imposed visa restrictions on employees from Chinese tech companies deemed to have provided "material support to regimes engaging in human rights abuses globally," including the telecommunications company Huawei.

In a speech on Thursday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington and its allies must use "more creative and assertive ways” to press the Chinese Communist Party to change its ways, calling it the "mission of our time."

Parking space conflict leads to beating, gunfire, arrests, police said
    Frank Fernandez 14 hrs ago

A Deltona pair beat a Missouri woman in a confrontation over a parking space at a beachside lot on Sunday in Daytona Beach and then one of them fired a gun in the woman's direction, according to a police report.

Trung D. Mai, 34, and MyThiDiem Nguyen, 30, both of Lydia Drive in Deltona, were arrested minutes after the violence, police said. Mai was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, battery and child abuse without great bodily harm. Nguyen was charged with battery and child abuse without great harm.

Trung was released from the Volusia County Branch Jail after posting $21,000 in bail while Nguyen was freed after posting $2,000.

The incident occurred about 2:29 p.m. Sunday in the Breakers Park parking lot at 18 S. Ocean Ave.

Katelynn Danzer, 23, was driving through the lot when she saw a vehicle about to leave, so she stopped and waited. The vehicle left the parking lot but before Danzer could pull in a woman later identified as Nguyen ran up and stood in the parking spot as if to claim it, the report said.

Danzer started pulling into the spot and Nguyen walked up to the driver's side door and started banging on the door and hood of her car, the report said.

Danzer got out of her car and as she argued Nguyen the woman started to push her on her shoulders and torso with her fingers.

Danzer then said she suddenly got hit in the back by something and curled into a fetal position while she was struck seven to eight times, the report said.

Danzer said she next heard what she believed was a firecracker until she turned around and saw Mai holding a gun directed toward her, the report said.

A 16-year-old in Danzer's car said he saw the argument between the two. He then saw Mai come up behind Danzer and kick her in the back in a jumping motion, the report said.

The 16-year-old said he saw both Mai and Nguyen striking Danzer multiple times before Mai fired the gun, the report said. But the teenager did not notice where the gun was pointed, the report said.

Mai and Nguyen got into a black Infiniti and drove away, but police spotted the Infinity minutes later on South Coates Street, the report said. Mai was driving, Nguyen was in the front passenger seat and a child was in the back seat. The child was released to a family member and the Department of Children and Families was notified.

Police found a 9 mm pistol in the car.
