Town wakes to find layer of legumes
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ybean-snowfall

Like most Canadians, residents of the city of Hamilton, Ontario, are well used to waking to find their yards and houses coated in a mantle of white. But when they left their houses on a recent morning, they were surprised to realise that it was not snow that had fallen in the night.

Van Halem, who lives down the street from a soya processing plant operated by US-based Bunge, contacted the company to see if they had an explanation.

The next day, she received a voice mail confirming the soya husks had been accidentally released after a filter malfunctioned.

She and her husband were aware that food processing sites had a history of accidentally releasing products into the air when they recently bought their house. In 2020, a factory accidentally dumped sugar on a neighbourhood.

    Los Angeles cargo theft
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...-union-pacific

In a December letter to Los Angeles county district attorney George Gascon, Union Pacific said it had experienced an over 160% increase in criminal rail theft in Los Angeles county since December 2020 and that on average, more than 90 containers were compromised each day. In several months during that period, the increase from the previous year surpassed 200%, according to the company. For the month of October 2021, it estimated the increase to be over 356% compared to the year before.

In the letter, Union Pacific said it has stepped up the number of Union Pacific special agents on patrol, and was exploring the use of tools like drones, specialized fencing and trespass detection systems.

Thieves use bolt cutters to break the locks on the containers and load up vans or trucks with the stolen merchandise.

Havana Syndrome could be caused by pulsed energy devices – US expert report
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ces-cia-report

The report found that: “Pulsed electromagnetic energy, particularly in the radio frequency range, plausibly explains the core characteristics, although information gaps exist.”

It added that “sources exist that could generate the required stimulus, are concealable, and have moderate power requirements.”

Using what the report described as “nonstandard antennas and techniques”, electromagnetic pulsed energy could be directed at a target “through air for tens to hundreds of meters, and with some loss, through most building materials”.

Pulsed electromagnetic energy had been “credibly demonstrated” to cause the observed symptoms, the panel found, and that “persons accidentally exposed to radio frequency signals described sensations similar to the core characteristics”.
    Smells like conspiracy.

    Lone survivor of migrant boat
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ontoya-caicedo

Juan Esteban Montoya Caicedo, of Colombia, told a Spanish-language news conference in Fort Pierce, Florida, that a baby girl and other children were among the group of 40 that included Dominicans, Haitians, Bahamians and Jamaicans.

They set out for Florida from Bimini in the Bahamas on 22 January. His younger sister was part of the group but drowned, he said.

He said the motor broke down in the early hours of 23 January and the boat was adrift in choppy seas for about four hours, adding that he told his sister to pray, prepare for the worst and hold on to the vessel.

But then a giant wave overturned the boat and the two were separated. People were in a life or death battle for survival.

Montoya spent two days holding on to the 25ft boat before he was rescued last Tuesday.

Trump Is Charging $100K for a Photo-Op at Mar-a-Lago as Part of Republican Midterm Fundraiser

The former president's political groups — and the millions they've raised — underline his continued popularity among conservatives despite his two impeachments and 2020 election loss

Former President Donald Trump is reportedly charging $100,000 for attendees of an upcoming fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago to take a photo with him, with ticket prices for a private dinner soaring to $250,000.

An invite to the event — shared on Twitter by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman — shows that the cost to attend the Take Back Congress Candidate Forum on Feb. 23 at the private Palm Beach, Florida, club starts at $5,000.

The prices go up for those interested in being photographed alongside the former president or having a meet-and-greet with him at his club (where he is also routinely spotted by passersby who then share his comings and goings on social media).

deaths of Indian family at US-Canada border put visa sales under scrutiny
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...under-scrutiny

It was a family of four – Jagdish Patel, 39, his wife Vaishali, 37, 11-year-old daughter Vihangi and three-year-old son Dharmik – who set off from Dingucha on 10 January, with Canada visitor visas stamped in their passports. They landed in Toronto on 12 January. Patel called his father and cousin back in India to let them know that it was cold, but they were all fine and in a hotel.

Six days later, the young family arrived in Emerson, a tiny town on the Canada-US border where night-time temperatures regularly drop below -35 degrees centigrade in the winter. The next night, the Patel family were discovered frozen to death in the snow, 12 metres away from the US border.

According to a Dingucha resident who had previous experience with the local visa agents, the standard cost for a family of four to get to the US is 16.5m rupees (£164,000) – a staggering sum, particularly for a rural farming community. However, Patel’s father, a farmer, is said to have paid half the sum in cash for his son’s travel to the US and the other half in the form of 20 acres of land.

The agents are now the focus on an investigation by India’s central Crime Investigation Department, who this week sent officers from the anti-human trafficking unit to the towns and cities around Dingucha where these agents operate. In the US and Canada, 13 agents allegedly facilitating illegal trafficking from India have been detained.

Infant killed after coast guard opens fire on boat carrying Venezuelan migrants
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...go-coast-guard

A Venezuelan woman was shot and wounded and her nine-month-old baby was killed in her arms when Trinidad and Tobago’s coast guard opened fire on the boat carrying migrants fleeing their home country.Human rights activists have called for a thorough investigation of the incident.

“Opening fire on fleeing migrants and asylum seekers that have identified themselves as such would be an atrocity,” said Geoff Ramsey, director for Venezuela at the Washington Office on Latin America (Wola), a thinktank. “This needs a thorough investigation into not only the circumstances around the child’s death but also a migration system that apparently allows the use of deadly force and routinely violates Venezuelans’ right to seek asylum.”

“No migrant child should ever die, whether travelling with their parents or alone. No mother wants to put the lives of her children at risk on a small ship in the deep sea, unless she has no other option,” said Jean Gough, Unicef regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean. “Two in three Venezuelans on the move are women and children. This tragic event is a stark reminder that they are the most vulnerable among the vulnerable. They deserve special attention, protection and safety – anywhere and anytime.”

Trinidad and Tobago, which sits about 60 miles (96 km) off the coast of Venezuela, has become a destination for roughly 25,000 migrants, usually arriving on rickety and overloaded fishing boats, part of a wider exodus that has seen nearly six million Venezuelans flee. Since 2018, over 100 Venezuelans have died while attempting to make the crossing.

Many arrive to neighbouring Colombia and other Latin American countries on foot. Venezuelans are also arriving to the US border in record numbers, with US border authorities reporting 24,819 attempted crossings in December, up 206 from the previous year.

Venezuelan migrants often face some backlash in their destination countries – despite generally welcoming messaging from governments – but Trinidad and Tobago has come under particular criticism for its draconian policies and practices.
