PayPal blocks site that helped raise funds for those who attended Capitol violence

(Reuters) - PayPal Holdings Inc said on Monday it had blocked a Christian crowdfunding site, GiveSendGo, after it helped raise funds for people who attended last week’s event in Washington when supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol.

The digital payments processor also confirmed to Reuters that it closed an account held by Ali Alexander, one of the organizers of the gathering. The news was reported earlier by Bloomberg, which cited an unidentified source.

Online platforms and social media companies are distancing themselves from, and taking action against, those that encouraged or engaged in last week’s violence in the U.S. Capitol.

Twitter said it has suspended more than 70,000 accounts since Friday that were primarily dedicated to sharing QAnon content after the assault on the Capitol building.

A number of large U.S. companies, including AT&T Inc, American Express and Dow Inc, have said they would cut off campaign contributions to those who voted to challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s victory, with Republicans in the U.S. Congress facing growing consternation from corporate America.

Supporters of Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, trying to halt the certification by Congress of Biden’s election win.

Trump, who has without evidence challenged the validity of Biden’s election win, initially praised his supporters but later condemned the violence.

Bloomberg reported last week that PayPal had closed an account held by Joy In Liberty, one of the groups that paid for supporters of Trump to travel to Washington.

Representatives of GiveSendGo, which describes itself as “A place to fund hope. A place to work together with the body of Christ around the world to make a difference,” could not be reached immediately for comment.

A Hacker Leaked Every Single Post From Parler, and It Isn’t Pretty

After the U.S. Capitol was stormed by a mob of President Trump’s supporters, investigations and searches began to find those involved. Surprisingly (and ironically) enough, it seems that the now-banned social media app Parler, which became a platform for mostly conservative users for “free speech" may be the key to helping arrest many of those individuals.

According to the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, Parler was one of several apps used to coordinate the breach of the Capitol, in a plan to overturn the 2020 election results and keep Donald Trump in power.

However, the app really just became a place for far-right conspiracy theories, racism, and death threats aimed at prominent Democratic (and some Republican) politicians. The app also became a great tool to track down those involved in the failed coup. While the app may be deleted, that didn’t mean that hackers couldn’t do an entire data dump and expose several users.

A main hacker of Parler documented the data dump on Twitter.

The main hacker, Twitter user @donk_enby, began by archiving every post from Jan. 6, 2020, the day of the Capitol riot. Gizmodo reported, “Operating on little sleep, @donk_enby began the work of archiving all of Parler’s posts, ultimately capturing around 99 percent of its content...@donk_enby said she was crawling some 1.1 million Parler video URLs.”

“These are the original, unprocessed, raw files as uploaded to Parler with all associated metadata,” she told Gizmodo. She eventually had downloaded more than 56 terabytes of information, including the raw video files with GPS metadata pointing to exact locations of where the videos were taken.

The hacker soon crowdsourced her work to help download data faster.

So, how did this hacker get all the information in the first place? Parler’s process of “deleting” users' posts helped a lot. According to Vice, like most online apps and services, Parler didn’t actually delete user posts. Instead, they marked them as unviewable and omitted them from search results. Similar to when you make a YouTube video “Unlisted.”

“Initially, the hacker worked on downloading the data herself, but when Amazon announced it was going to shut off access, they urged her followers to join in by publishing a list of all the posts,” Vice reported.

“The hacker set up a crowdsourcing system where multiple people could help download the content. The downloaded data is now being processed before being uploaded to the Internet Archive, where anyone will be able to view or download it — including the open-source intelligence community and law enforcement agencies.”

The news of the data dump has scared (and angered) far-right supporters.

Once news got around that no one’s Parler posts were safe from hackers, many conservative news outlets began warning their audience. “Bad news. Left extremists have captured and archived over 70TB of data from Parler servers. This includes posts, personal information, locations, videos, images, etc,” a Telegram account called North Central Florida Patriots said.

“The intent is a mass dox and a list to hold patriots ‘accountable’. It is too late to scrub your data, and it’s already archived. There is nothing you can do to prevent what’s already happened. All you can do is prepare for the fallout. Accountability may come in many forms for our free speech, doxing, jobs might be called, addresses leaked and people coming to your house, etc,” they warned.

While many were concerned about the fallout of the hack, others were pleased to know that there would be consequences for extremist behavior. “The #Parler hack was genius. All of the user date revealed, including location, messages and other metadata. Whoops! @fbi is going to have a field day,” one Twitter user wrote.

The online payments processing company restricts payments from "high risk" businesses including those that "engages in, encourages, promotes or celebrates unlawful violence or physical harm to persons or property," according to its website statement on restricted businesses.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump's campaign paid Stripe more than $1.8 million in the 2020 election cycle, Federal Election Commission records show.

When FBI agents first asked Kevin J. Lyons whether he had entered the U.S. Capitol during last week’s breach, they say he didn’t give a direct answer.

Then they showed him a photo briefly posted to his Instagram account of a sign that read, “Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.”

“Wow you are pretty good,” Lyons, of Chicago, allegedly replied. “That was up for only an hour.”

Parler CEO says social media app, favored by Trump supporters, may not return

(Reuters) - Social media platform Parler, which has gone dark after being cut off by major service providers that accused the app of failing to police violent content, may never get back online, said its CEO John Matze.

As a procession of business vendors severed ties with the two-year-old site following the storming of the U.S. Capitol last week, Matze said in an interview with Reuters on Wednesday that he does not know when or if it will return.

“It could be never,” he said. “We don’t know yet.”

After this story was published, Matze added: “I am an optimist. It may take days, it may take weeks but Parler will return and when we do we will be stronger.”

Matze said that Parler was talking to more than one cloud computing service but refused to disclose names, citing the likelihood of harassment for the companies involved. He said the best thing would be if Parler could get back on Amazon.com Inc.

Parler, which claims it had over 12 million users, on Monday filed a lawsuit against Amazon’s cloud computing division.

Amazon cut off the social media platform, which styles itself as a “free-speech” space and is favored by supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump, from its servers this weekend for failing to effectively moderate violent content.

In the interview, Matze said its relationship with Amazon appeared to deteriorate overnight and without much warning, an assessment that Amazon disputes in legal filings.

As late as this summer, Amazon invited Parler to join an initiative to connect it with potential investors, Matze said, which was independently confirmed by a source who characterized the offer as standard for startup customers.

Amazon later ended the program and did not secure funding for Parler, the source said. Matze said the company did not need more funding at the time.

By November, however, Amazon had received reports that Parler hosted threatening content in what it says breached the companies’ agreement, according to an Amazon legal filing. Amazon flagged over 100 examples to a Parler executive, such as content exhorting people to “Form MILITIAS now and acquire targets,” the filing said.

In another court filing Wednesday, Parler said that Amazon had not provided proof that the platform was used to incite and organize the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol siege. It called Amazon’s termination of its services “catastrophic.”

Disinformation researchers have said far-right groups that appeared at the riot maintained a vigorous online presence on alternative platforms including Parler, where they spread violent rhetoric ahead of the unrest.

‘HARD TO KEEP TRACK’

Amazon was not alone in taking action against the social media company. Apple Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google also kicked Parler from their app stores.

Matze said, “It’s hard to keep track of how many people are telling us that we can no longer do business with them.”

He said Parler had also been booted from online payments service Stripe and had lost its Scylla Enterprise database as well as access to Twilio Inc and Slack Technologies Inc, a popular workplace messaging app. He also said it had been ditched by American Express Co, but the company said it did not have a direct merchant relationship with Parler.

ScyllaDB and Twilio said Parler violated their policies over violent content. Slack and Stripe did not immediately respond to Reuters requests to comment.

Matze said that Parler relies on about 600 paid and unpaid “jurors” to make decisions in small groups on problematic content.

He said he thought Parler had done a good job on moderation but was trying to be more proactive. After vendors told the platform there was a problem, Parler had put an algorithm in place by the end of Sunday to flag problematic posts, he said.

Amazon Web Services did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment about the algorithm.

As of Wednesday, Matze said there had been no changes to investors in Parler. Hedge fund investor Robert Mercer and his daughter Rebekah Mercer and conservative commentator Dan Bongino are investors of the service.

Online holiday rentals company Airbnb said Wednesday it will be blocking and canceling all reservations in the US capital city Washington, D.C. area, during the week of the upcoming presidential inauguration.

The decision was in response to local, state and federal officials asking people not to travel to Washington, the company said in a statement.

Law enforcement is hoping to avoid violence during the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20.

On January 6, supporters of US President Donald Trump took part in a violent storming of US Capitol buildings in Washington, during a joint session of Congress to verify Biden's presidential election win.

"We are aware of reports emerging yesterday afternoon regarding armed militias and known hate groups that are attempting to travel and disrupt the Inauguration," Airbnb stated in a corporate blog.

Security around the Washington, D.C. has been ramped up. Around 10,000 National Guard troops will help secure the area ahead of the inauguration.

What action is Airbnb taking?

Guests whose reservations were canceled will be refunded in full. Airbnb will also reimburse hosts the money they would have earned from those canceled reservations.

Reservations at HotelTonight, a service owned by Airbnb, will also be canceled.

Airbnb declined to say how many reservations were canceled. But over Presidents' Day weekend, the site lists more than 300 rentals in the Washington area, news agency AP reported.

The San Francisco-based company has been working with law enforcement and media to identify and ban people involved in the criminal activity at the Capitol building.

"We are continuing our work to ensure hate group members are not part of the Airbnb community," the company said.

Are other hotels and rental sites blocking reservations?

Major hotel chains Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc and Marriott International said they planned to uphold existing reservations.

"We are monitoring the situation very closely and have operational and security plans in place," Marriott said.

Hyatt did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
