Canada’s Catholic bishops apologise for abuses in residential schools
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ential-schools
The conference is the national assembly of bishops in Canada, formally recognised by the Catholic church and part of a global network of conferences.
Starting in 1831 and as recently as 1996, Canada’s residential school system forcibly separated indigenous children from their families, subjecting them to malnourishment and physical and sexual abuse in what the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 2015 called “cultural genocide”.
Survivors recalled perpetual hunger and haunting loneliness, with schools run under the threat and frequent use of force.
“We acknowledge the grave abuses that were committed by some members of our Catholic community; physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and sexual,” the statement added.
“We also sorrowfully acknowledge the historical and ongoing trauma and the legacy of suffering and challenges faced by Indigenous Peoples that continue to this day.”
The pope and the Catholic church itself have refused to apologise for the church’s role, unlike the Anglican, Presbyterian and United churches.
Global outrage around the lack of apology spread earlier this year, after hundreds of unmarked graves of indigenous children were discovered at the sites of former residential schools across Canada.

Pope Francis highlights ‘very painful errors’ as he marks Mexico’s independence anniversary
https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/n...ce-anniversary
Pope Francis highlighted “very painful errors” committed in the past as he marked the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s independence.
In a letter addressed to Archbishop Rogelio Cabrera López, president of the Episcopal Conference of Mexico, the pope said he hoped that the anniversary would be an “occasion to strengthen our roots and reaffirm the values that build the nation.”
“In order to strengthen our roots, it is necessary to reread the past, taking into account both the lights and shadows that have forged the country’s history. This look back necessarily includes a process of purifying memory, that is, to recognize the very painful errors committed in the past,” the pope wrote.
“For this reason, on various occasions, both my predecessors and I have asked forgiveness for personal and social sins, for all the actions or omissions that did not contribute to evangelization.”

Bruce’s Beach to be returned to Black family 100 years after city ‘used the law to steal it’
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ars-california
In 1912 Willa and Charles Bruce bought land in Manhattan Beach, a Los Angeles seaside suburb, turning it into a thriving resort run for and by Black residents despite harassment and violence from white neighbors.
But in the 1920s the Manhattan Beach city council used eminent domain to take the land from the Bruces, purportedly for use as a park. Yet the land lay unused for years until was transferred to the state in 1948.
