Ohio Launches COVID-19 Vaccine Lottery, Will Give Away $1 Million To 5 Vaccinated Ohioans
    https://www.yahoo.com/huffpost/ohio-...004845370.html

As demand for the coronavirus vaccine plummets across his state, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) is dangling attractive incentives to convince Ohioans to get vaccinated: $1 million prizes and full-ride scholarships to public colleges.
DeWine announced in a Wednesday statewide televised address that five vaccinated adults would be chosen at random to each receive a $1 million prize as part of the “Ohio Vax-a-Million” lottery.

Drawings for the winners, conducted by the Ohio Lottery, will be held over five consecutive Wednesdays starting May 26, DeWine said. Only Ohio residents who are at least 18 years of age and have been vaccinated before the drawings will be eligible to win.

    Kiếp tha hương:

Mexico faces up to uneasy anniversary of Chinese massacre
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...tenary-torreon

A total of 303 Chinese people were murdered in the massacre at Torreón, then a burgeoning railway town some 500 miles south of the US border. Afterwards, rebels and locals posed for photographs with the bodies of their victims before they were hauled away by the cartload.

The savagery was an appalling expression of a wave of anti-Chinese racism which swept throughout North America in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

In the US such sentiments led to the Chinese Exclusion Act banning the immigration of Chinese labourers; in Mexico they culminated in the expulsion of most of the country’s Chinese population in the 1930s.

The Torreón massacre caused indignation in China, and Mexico eventually agreed to pay 3.1m pesos in gold in reparations, although the payment was never made.

“The Chinese community [in Torreón] was the most prosperous [Chinese community] in Mexico,” Herbert said. “It wasn’t the most numerous, but it was the most prosperous.”

In his book The House of the Pain of Others: Chronicle of a Small Genocide, Herbert disputes the local narrative that the pogrom was a spontaneous uprising by poor Mexicans, arguing instead that anti-Chinese racism was rife in Torreón – and across the country. Herbert’s conclusions proved so controversial that he was unable to hold an event promoting the book in Torreón.

    Calling Rudy: dead people voted!!!

Colorado man suspected in wife's death cast ballot for Trump in her name
    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...p-her-n1267416

Barry Morphew told investigators he mailed the ballot on behalf of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, to help Trump win, saying “all these other guys are cheating,” and that he thought his wife would have voted for Trump anyway, according to an arrest warrant affidavit signed Thursday by a judge in Chaffee County.

Morphew, 53, faces possible first-degree murder and other charges in connection with the disappearance of Suzanne Morphew on May 10, 2020. He was arrested May 5 and is currently being held in connection with that case.

San Jose shooting: nine dead, including gunman, after attack at California rail yard
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...unman-railyard

Multiple news reports have identified the attacker as 57-year-old Sam Cassidy, citing law enforcement sources. Authorities said the shooter took his own life.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, it was the deadliest mass shooting in the Bay Area since 1993, when eight people and a gunman were killed at the 101 California Street skyscraper in San Francisco.

A fuller picture of the attacker began to emerge by Wednesday evening. Sam Cassidy’s ex-wife, Cecilia Nelms, told the Associated Press that Cassidy had a bad temper and would tell her that he wanted to kill people at work, “but I never believed him, and it never happened. Until now.”

Idaho governor repeals lieutenant’s mask ban
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ttle-mcgeachin

Brad Little called Janice McGeachin’s action “an irresponsible, self-serving political stunt” and an example of the government “tyranny” she claimed to oppose.

Little has never issued a statewide mask mandate but he has worn a mask and encouraged others to do so. As across the US, case numbers are dropping as more Idahoans are vaccinated.

McGeachin announced her own run for governor last week.

Seizing her chance when Little was in Tennessee for a meeting of Republican governors on Thursday, she said her order banning mask mandates in schools and public buildings would “protect the rights and liberties of individuals and businesses”. In conflict with almost all public and scientific advice, the text of the order said masks were “ineffective mitigation measures”.

Renewed calls for Catholic Church apology after mass grave of Indigenous children found in Canada
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/remains-2...015339988.html

An Indigenous Canadian group announced plans Saturday to identify the remains of 215 children, some as young as three, found buried at the site of a former residential school, per CBC News.

Many of the almost 150,000 children attending the schools from 1883 to 1996 to "assimilate" into white Canadian society encountered neglect and abuse, as their native languages and cultures were forbidden, the Washington Post reports.

Canada's government apologized in 2008, admitting that physical and sexual abuse in the schools was ưidespread.

    Prime Minister
Trudeau tweeted Friday that the discovery was "a painful reminder of that dark and shameful chapter of our country's history."

Cyber sát hợi: Liệu thế giới Bắc Mỹ, Châu Âu và Úc bỏ thịt ăn chay?

Cyberattack forces world's largest meat packer to close plants globally
The Brazilian multinational JBS has closed plants in Australia, Canada and the US, driving livestock futures down, pork prices up and sparking global food supply fears.

The closures have sent pork prices higher on Chicago's Mercantile Exchange (CME), while cattle owners saw value drop

JBS, the world's largest meat producer, has been forced to close a number of its plants around the world as the result of a cyberattack on its servers.

In a statement from JBS USA, which is headquartered in Greeley, Colorado, the company said it was targeted by an "organized cybersecurity attack" on Sunday.

The attack affected "some of the servers supporting its North American and Australian IT systems," the statement read.

"The company's backup servers were not affected and it is actively working with an Incident Response firm to restore its systems as soon as possible," JBS USA said.

JBS Brazil said late on Tuesday that it had made "significant progress" and was planning to have the "vast majority" of its operation up and running again on Wednesday.

"Our systems are coming back online and we are not sparing any resources to fight this threat," CEO of JBS USA Andre Noguera said.

On Tuesday, the White House confirmed reports that the incident was a ransomware attack — saying ransom demand came from a criminal organization likely based in Russia.

As a result of the attack, JBS closed facilities in Australia on Monday and in the US and Canada on Tuesday.

Company processes nearly a quarter of all US meat
JBS, the largest beef producer in the US, slaughters, packages and sells roughly a quarter of all beef in the country and a fifth of the pork.

The processing plants that JBS USA closed in Utah, Texas, Wisconsin and Nebraska, and the "kill and fabrication shifts" it canceled at plants in Iowa and Colorado on Tuesday, account for the slaughter and processing of some 22,500 cows each day.

JBS also owns pork facilities in the US, and Pilgrim's Pride, the country's second largest chicken producer.

According to company filings, JBS USA's beef, pork and poultry divisions had net revenue of about $40 billion (€33 billion) in 2020. JBS USA operates in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Europe.

The biggest meat processor in Canada and in Australia, too

In Canada, JBS closed its Brooks processing plant in the province of Alberta. According to the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, the facility processes 30% of all federally inspected meat in the country.

A day prior, on Monday, JBS shut down operations at its Dinmore Australia facility — the biggest beef plant in the southern hemisphere. JBS, which is also Australia's largest meat processor, exports to more than 50 countries from facilities there.

Australian Agriculture Minister David Littleproud has said the government is working with international partners trying to trace, rectify and prosecute where possible, those behind the attack.

Closures and fears drive markets in different directions

As a result of the closings, ranchers delivering livestock in the US, Canada and Australia were turned away from JBS facilities — recalling images from last year, when cattle and hogs on some US farms were euthanized after extended slaughterhouse closures.

The JBS shutdowns come at a time of oversupply caused by staffing difficulties due to coronavirus outbreaks at plants. This, coupled with increased Chinese demand for what is being processed, has driven up the cost of meat.

The plants, some of the biggest in the world, account for a major portion of global meat processing and news of the closures quickly influenced markets with livestock futures sinking and pork prices rising amid fears about global food supplies.

JBS said the incident may delay certain transactions with customers and suppliers, though said it's Brazilian operations had not been affected by the attack.

The company owns facilities in 20 countries, with the US accounting for half of its overall revenue, Australia and New Zealand representing 4% and Canada 3%, according to fillings.

The attack on JBS comes three weeks after Colonial Pipeline Co., operator of the biggest gasoline pipeline in the US, was targeted in a ransomware attack, causing gas shortages throughout large swaths of the country.
