Hackers break into FBI server, send emails warning of cyberattacks
Hackers breached a Federal Bureau of Investigation email system and sent thousands of fake messages, according to the US law enforcement agency. The FBI said it has shut down the server.
The FBI said it is aware of the intrusion but has revealed very little about the hacking attack
The FBI said it detected the spam emails quickly on Saturday and shut down the system that was used to send fake emails warning of a potential cyberattack. It also reminded the public to remain cautious and report suspicious activity.
Hackers sent out emails from what looked like a legitimate FBI address, the bureau said.
The emails warned recipients of a possible cyberattack. It is not clear whether emails were sent out to government officials, the public, or both.
Threat-tracking group Spamhaus Project posted an image of the fake email that was sent.
The fake warning messages were also signed off by the US Department of Homeland Security, whereas the FBI is part of the US Department of Justice.
FBI monitoring situation
The FBI said the hardware impacted by the hack was "taken offline quickly upon discovery of the issue."
It added that it was an "ongoing situation" and asked people to be wary of such messages. It also reminded the public to report any suspicious activity.
Hackers have repeatedly targeted US government agencies in recent times with the SolarWinds hack being one of the most high-profile espionage efforts.
Russian hackers successfully breached nine US agencies during the attack in an effort to mine government secrets. They are suspected of having carried out the operation by infecting software with malicious codes that gave them access to US government agency networks.
The breach only came to light in December 2020.

Chaos at Atlanta airport after passenger accidentally fires gun
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ally-fires-gun
A passenger awaiting a search at the Atlanta airport’s main security checkpoint reached in his bag and grabbed a firearm, and it went off, causing chaos among travelers, officials said.
The passenger ran with the gun from the checkpoint and escaped out an airport exit, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said. Authorities described the discharge as accidental.
Police said later they had issued a warrant for the arrest of the passenger, 42-year-old Kenny Wells, who they identified as a convicted felon.
Across the nation, the TSA said, it had stopped 4,495 airline passengers from carrying firearms onto their flights by 3 October of this year, surpassing the previous record of 4,432 firearms caught at checkpoints in all of 2019.

US added to list of ‘backsliding’ democracies
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...-international
“A historic turning point came in 2020-21 when former president Donald Trump questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election results in the United States”, according to the Stockholm-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.
International IDEA bases its assessments on 50 years of democratic indicators in about 160 countries, assigning them to three categories: democracies (including those that are “backsliding”), “hybrid” governments and authoritarian regimes.

Không có thực mới vực được đạo:
the myth of the ‘first Thanksgiving’
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...american-tribe
Instead, settler accounts reveal the Separatists, who had already found religious freedom in Holland in 1608 before leaving largely to preserve their own culture and language, were celebrating their first harvest by blasting muskets, causing “90 Wampanoag to arrive for war”.
Peters added: “That being smoothed over, they stayed for a tense, diplomatic meal that may or may not have included turkey. For hundreds of years it wasn’t mentioned again.”
David Silverman, a George Washington University historian and author of This Land Is Their Land, said this “nothing event” transformed into “the modern Thanksgiving myth” in the 19th century, to sanitise “America’s bloody, colonial history”.
Mahtowin Munro, a Lakota and co-leader of the United American Indians of New England, which organizes an annual Day of Mourning that attracts 1,500 people and is livestreamed globally, said: “For many, Thanksgiving is the gooey overlay of sweetness over genocide. Even today, a lot of people think we are extinct.”

Barbados is ditching the Queen
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/nov/29/nelson-blm-and-new-voices-how-barbados-came-to-cut-ties-to-crown
Late on Monday night, local time, Barbados will declare itself a republic, becoming the first nation to remove Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state in nearly three decades.
Reclassified under British law as property, the men, women and children who worked the cane fields of Barbados were subject to unimaginable brutality. The first systematic study of the health of those buried at the Newton Slave Burial Ground found the average life expectancy of those examined was 18 years old, with the lives of women thought to be especially appalling: until then, no lower mean age of death had been documented among enslaved females anywhere in the world.
“Barbados was a hellhole,” Comissiong says. “For black people, Barbados was a brutal, hellish society.”
Asked what the crown means to him, Downes is clear. “It signifies a time when people who looked like me … were almost considered just a part in the process of generating wealth,” he says. “Humanity was not considered. Civil rights were not considered.”
