Fib to the FBI:
US congressman Jeff Fortenberry resigns after conviction for lying to FBI
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...f-lying-to-fbi
The Nebraska congressman Jeff Fortenberry has resigned from office after a California jury convicted him of lying to federal authorities about an illegal campaign donation from a foreign national.
In a letter to the House on Saturday, nine-term Republican Fortenberry said he was resigning from Congress, effective 31 March.
“It has been my honor to serve with you in the United States House of Representatives,” he said in the letter. “Due to the difficulties of my current circumstances, I can no longer effectively serve.”
Fortenberry’s announcement followed concerted pressure from political leaders in Nebraska and Washington for him to step down. House speaker Nancy Pelosi and House minority leader Kevin McCarthy on Friday urged Fortenberry to resign.
Nebraska’s Republican governor, Pete Ricketts, said Fortenberry should “do the right thing for his constituents” and leave the office he has held since 2005.

Pope apologizes to Indigenous people of Canada for ‘deplorable’ abuses

“For the deplorable behaviour of those members of the Catholic church, I ask forgiveness from God and I would like to tell you from the bottom of my heart that I am very pained,” he said, speaking in Italian.
“I join my brother Canadian bishops in apologising,” he said. His speech in the Vatican’s frescoed Sala Clementina was preceded by prayers by Indigenous leaders in native languages asking the “great spirit” to bless all those present.

Mark Meadows removed from North Carolina voter roll amid fraud inquiry
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...l-amid-inquiry
Trump’s last White House chief of staff, Mark Meadows, has been removed from the electoral roll in North Carolina, amid a criminal inquiry into whether he committed election fraud by registering to vote at a residence he never owned or lived in.
He voted from there as an absentee in the 2020 presidential election.
Meadows has commented, extensively, on the dangers of voter fraud and its supposed role in Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election.
He addressed the subject at length in his memoir, The Chief’s Chief.

Chuyện dài cảnh sát tự vệ:
police killed their son in an ‘execution’
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...lled-execution
Video footagereleased by the Grand Rapids police chief on Wednesday shows a short foot chase on a residential street after Lyoya ran from the officer who stopped him for driving with a license plate that didn’t belong to the vehicle. They are shown briefly struggling over the officer’s Taser, before he apparently shoots Lyoya in the back of the head while kneeling on his back.
“The video shows us that this is as his mother and father have said – an execution. And there is no way to spin it or justify,” said Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights lawyer who has represented several victims of police violence, as Patrick’s parents wept. “It is an unjustifiable use of deadly force because the police escalated a traffic stop into an execution.”
Crump said the officer could have waited for backup when Lyoya ran but instead got “violent”.
“We are condemning Russian soldiers for shooting civilians in Ukraine in the back of the head,” Crump said. “Why aren’t we condemning police officers here in the United States of America shooting Black civilians in the back of the head? If it’s wrong in Ukraine … it’s wrong in Grand Rapids, Michigan.”

I called the Ukrainian embassy in Washington and I said: ‘Hey, I want an appointment.’ They were a little slow, so I just went down there and put in my application. The guy asked if I had combat experience and I said ‘Yep.’ Then he looked at my application and said, ‘You’re on the team.’
African Americans have always fought for the freedom of others, even when they didn’t have it themselves.
But I know there is a lot of criticism. And to be honest, what upsets them the most is that I’m Black. It’s not about how we view the rest of the world. It’s about how we view ourselves in that world – as free people. And that’s what upsets them the most.
People have a problem with believing African Americans have ideals and that we stand for what we believe. When you compare the percentage of African Americans in the country to the percentage in the armed forces, we fight disproportionately for the country.

Goodwill find turns out to be 2,000-year-old Roman relic
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ld-roman-relic
After purchasing the bust, Young reached out to various auction houses and experts to find out more about the sculpture.
A specialist used a digital database to track down the bust’s provenance and found photos from the 1930s featuring the head in Aschaffenburg in Bavaria, Germany.
Furthermore, the bust probably belonged to Roman military leader Sextus Pompey, according to San Antonio Museum of Art postdoctoral fellow Lynley McAlpine.
The bust was once kept at Pompejanum, a replica of a Pompeii-style Roman home that was commissioned by King Ludwig I and built in the 1840s.
The San Antonio art museum was loaned the bust for a year, but the piece still technically belongs to Germany because it was stolen from storage.

68-year-old suspect in church shooting was motivated by hate
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...hurch-shooting
Don Barnes, the Orange county sheriff, said the motive of the shooting was a grievance between Chou, identified as a Chinese immigrant, and the Taiwanese community.
Chou’s family was among many that were apparently forcibly removed from China to Taiwan sometime after 1948, Orange county district attorney Todd Spitzer said. Chou’s hatred toward the island, allegedly documented in handwritten notes that authorities found, seems like it began when he felt he wasn’t treated well while living there.
A former neighbor said Chou’s life had unraveled after his wife left him.
