Indiana mall shooting
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ims-identified
Authorities on Monday identified the gunman who shot five people at a suburban Indianapolis shopping mall on Sunday, killing three of them, before a shopper shot and killed him.
He was a 20-year-old local man, Jonathan Sapirman, of Greenwood, who began firing after leaving a bathroom at the Greenwood Park Mall shortly before it closed Sunday evening, the Greenwood police chief, James Ison, said at a news conference.
Sapirman continued shooting people until he was shot and killed by 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken, of nearby Seymour, who was shopping with his girlfriend, said Ison.
Although authorities said Dicken was legally armed, the mall prohibits people from carrying weapons on its property.

Pope Francis ‘begs forgiveness’ over abuse at church schools in Canada
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...isit-to-canada
Pope Francis has apologised for the “disastrous error” and “evil” of Canada’s church-run residential schools, asking survivors of the system that abused tens of thousands of children for forgiveness as he toured the country on a “pilgrimage of penance”.
“I am sorry. I ask for forgiveness, in particular, for the ways in which many members of the church and of religious communities cooperated, not least through their indifference, in projects of cultural destruction and forced assimilation promoted by the governments of that time, which culminated in the system of residential schools,” Francis said, telling nearly 2,000 survivors of the residential school system of his “indignation” and “shame” over the painful memory of the treatment of Indigenous children.
Over more than a century, at least 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and forced to attend schools like Ermineskin, run by the Catholic church.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones ordered to pay $4.1m over false Sandy Hook claims
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ict-sandy-hook
The jury in Alex Jones’s defamation trial on Thursday ordered the far-right conspiracy theorist to pay $4.1m in damages over his repeated claims that the deadly Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax.
Instead, Jones claimed for years that the victims and their loved ones were “crisis actors” carrying out an elaborate ruse to force gun control.
In his own testimony, Jones apologized and conceded that the 2012 massacre at the elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, was “100% real”.

The FBI executed a search warrant Monday morning at Trump’s residence that came as part of an investigation into Trump’s potentially unlawful removal and destruction of White House records after his presidency, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
“My beautiful home, Mar-A-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents,” Trump said in a bitter statement on Monday evening, adding: “They even broke into my safe!”

Study: Temperature rises to 52 degrees in the United States
8/16/2022 8:06 am
It could soon become unbearably hot for millions of people in the United States. Researchers have predicted temperatures of more than 50 degrees for areas off the coast. In 30 years, the number of people affected by heat could increase thirteen-fold.
Researchers warn of the emergence of an “extreme heat belt” in the United States with perceived temperatures of about 52 degrees Celsius or higher. The NGO First Street Foundation presented a study, according to which by 2053 more than 100 million people in the US could live in areas that reach such temperatures at least one day a year.
8.1 million people are expected to live in such areas in the coming year. After 30 years, that number could rise to 107 million, a thirteen-fold increase.
offshore area
Dubbed the “Extreme Heat Belt” by the First Street Foundation, the region stretches from northern Texas and Louisiana to Illinois and Indiana to Wisconsin. These are areas away from the coast, where the sea ensures higher temperatures.
The term Extreme Heat Belt is based on the US National Weather Service’s highest heat category, which speaks of “extreme danger” at perceived temperatures of more than 125 °F (51.7 °C). The perceived temperature corresponds to the temperature sensed by the human body and takes into account not only the actual air temperature but also the humidity.
For their model, researchers from the First Street Foundation evaluated, among other things, satellite data on air and surface temperatures between 2014 and 2020, which included factors such as the height of a region, water absorption, the distance to a body Huh. Water and a Coast and then worked with forecasts by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on climate change in the coming decades.

Canada seek runaway wolf
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-wolf-break-in
The Greater Vancouver Zoo announced on Tuesday morning it would not open to crowds that day, and later acknowledged that a pack of grey wolves had escaped after “suspicious” damage to the fence of their enclosure. The zoo said the incident was probably the result of “malicious intent”.
On Wednesday, the province’s environment minister said one wolf was still at large as conservation officers worked alongside zoo staff to track it down.
The zoo stressed that there was no danger to the public, but asked anyone who sees a wolf in the area to contact authorities.
In 2019, the Vancouver Humane Society released a report criticizing the zoo.

Torrential rains lash southern US as millions under flood warnings
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...rrential-rains
Government meteorologists issued flood warnings for more than 13 million people after torrential rainfall created life-threatening conditions in a region including north-east Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Mexico.
On Monday, rains across the drought-stricken Dallas-Fort Worth area caused streets to flood, submerging vehicles as officials warned motorists to stay off the roads and water seeped into some homes and businesses.
Some parts of Dallas saw more that nearly 10 inches of rain within 24 hours, and hundreds of flights in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth international airport were delayed or cancelled.
“The Dallas-Fort Worth area was pretty much ground zero for the heaviest rain overnight,” said Daniel Huckaby, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
