Joe Biden's dog bites second person in a month
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/mar/31/joe-biden-dog-bites-second-person-in-a-month

Egypt's first female ship's captain says she was wrongly blamed for Suez blockage
    https://news.yahoo.com/egypts-first-...143614670.html

Marwa Elselehdar was working as a first mate in command of the Aida IV in Alexandria when the 220,000 ton Ever Given got stuck, blocking one of the world’s busiest shipping routes for six days.

The 29-year-old is a celebrated feminist figure in Egypt. In 2015 she became both the youngest and the first female Egyptian captain to cross the newly-expanded Suez Canal.

But when the Ever Given became an online sensation, a rumour mill was telling the world that she was to blame. "I felt that I might be targeted maybe because I'm a successful female in this field or because I'm Egyptian, but I'm not sure," she told the BBC.

Headlines that had previously celebrated her successes were doctored to say she was to blame and fake social media accounts were set up in her name. The rumour was spreading widely in Egypt and Ms Elselehdar was concerned her reputation could be damaged.

"This fake article was in English so it spread in other countries," she said. "I tried so hard to negate what was in the article because it was affecting my reputation and all the efforts I exerted to be where I am now."

3,000-year-old ‘lost golden city’ of ancient Egypt discovered
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ten-discovered

It called the find the largest ancient city, known as Aten, ever uncovered in Egypt.

Items of jewellery such as rings have been unearthed, along with coloured pottery vessels, scarab beetle amulets and mud bricks bearing the seals of Amenhotep III.

The team began excavations in September 2020, between the temples of Ramses III and Amenhotep III near Luxor, 500km (300 miles) south of the capital, Cairo.

“Within weeks, to the team’s great surprise, formations of mud bricks began to appear in all directions,” the statement read. “What they unearthed was the site of a large city in a good condition of preservation, with almost complete walls, and with rooms filled with tools of daily life.”

After seven months of excavations, several neighbourhoods have been uncovered, including a bakery complete with ovens and storage pottery, as well as administrative and residential districts.

Amenhotep III inherited an empire that stretched from the Euphrates to Sudan, archaeologists say, and died around 1354 BC.

Ever Given ship forbidden to leave the Suez Canal until its owners pay up
    https://www.businessinsider.com/ever-given-forbidden-leave-suez-canal-until-owners-pay-compensation-2021-4

While the giant Even Given container ship might have been freed from the banks of the Suez Canal, it still finds itself stuck, embroiled in a row of who should pay for dislodging it from the waterway.

Egyptian authorities said that they wouldn't release the massive ship, which was stuck in the Suez Canal for almost a week until its owners agree to pay up to $1 billion in compensation.

"The vessel will remain here until investigations are complete and compensation is paid," Lt. Gen. Osama Rabie, who leads the Suez Canal Authority, told a local news station on Thursday,
according to the Wall Street Journal.

The figure will cover the expense of the equipment and machinery used to clear the way, damage to the canal itself by the dredging, and compensate around 800 people who worked to release the 200,000-ton ship, Rabei said.

It will also refund the costs from the blocking of the canal, which ended up causing an
epic traffic jam of more than 400 ships on either side of the channel.

Hunger grows for thousands displaced by conflict in Chad
    https://www.theguardian.com/global-d...nflict-in-chad

The fighting, which last month claimed the life of the president of Chad, Idriss Déby, has displaced more than 400,000 Chadians, according to the International Organization for Migration, a rise from 169,000 at the start of 2020. More than 65,000 people were displaced in the first quarter of this year.

The World Food Programme (WFP) said it had been struggling to feed those in need. The agency expected a further 100,000 people living in the Kanem region, east of Lake Chad, to need food in the coming months, as the conflict between Chad’s army and the rebel forces, the Front for Change and Concord, showed no signs of easing.

“With current resources, WFP is able to provide emergency food assistance to some 223,000 out of the 401,000 internally displaced people in Lake Chad,” said Claude Jibidar, local WFP representative.

“We still need $67m [£48m] to support all internally displaced people until the end of the year, but funding is not forthcoming and many do not know where their next meal will come from.
“The humanitarian community is working to keep up with the pace of displacement but is still unable to provide an adequate and timely response.”

    Chinese miners kidnapped in Niger

The men were abducted near the country's border with Mali and Burkina Faso, a hotbed for Islamists. China, which mines uranium, gold and oil in the country, has expanded its operations across Africa.

Attacks on foreign facilities or people are not unheard of in Niger; this French uranium mine was targeted by suicide bombers

Two Chinese nationals working for a Chinese mining company in the west of Niger, near the country's borders with Mali and Burkina Faso, were abducted by armed men late Saturday night as Tidjani Ibrahim Katiella, the governor of Niger's Tillaberi region, told news agency AFP on Monday.

Katiella said the men "have a permit to search for gold," and that they had "refused to go home" after receiving prior warnings from armed groups in the area.

The area, known as the "three borders" zone of Sahel nations, has been a hotbed of jihadist activity, in which Islamist militants linked to al-Qaida and "Islamic State" have carried out attacks in all three countries (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger). Niger also faces ongoing threats from the group Boko Haram in the south.

It is not yet known who was behind the kidnapping.

    'An ultimatum to Chinese companies'

China, which aggressively mines minerals and other resources across Africa, signed an expanded deal for uranium, gold and oil exploration and extraction with Niger in 2006.

The last time a Chinese national was kidnapped in Niger was in 2007, when an employee from the China Nuclear Engineering and Construction Corporation (CNEC) was taken hostage by the Niger Movement for Justice (MNJ), a rebel Tuareg group operating in the north of the country.

At the time of the kidnapping, the MNJ said it was an "ultimatum to the Chinese companies that cooperate with the Niger army." The kidnapped engineer was eventually released after several days of negotiations.

China's manufacturing and export economy has fueled the need for raw materials and has seen Beijing invest billions in mining operations across the entire continent of Africa.

Beyond the oil, copper and iron needed for traditional manufacturing, Africa is rich in rare earths, such as coltan, needed for the manufacture of electronic goods, holding an estimated 75% of global supply. It is also estimated that Africa holds 90% of the world's platinum and cobalt reserves, 50% of its gold and 35% of its uranium.
