Kantamanto, which emerged in the 1960s out of a colonial-era mindset that pushed Ghanaians to adopt western clothing, now covers about 7 hectares (18 acres) of land, handling about 15m garments a week and providing work for about 30,000 people.

Retailers buy and sort through 55kg (121lb) bales of clothing – most of it is either “deadstock” (clothes kept in warehouses and storerooms for years but never worn) or items donated to charities or left in recycling bins. About 6m of the better-quality items are sold or upcycled in the market every week.

But about 40% of the textiles that arrive in Kantamanto are discarded as waste. The growth in “fast fashion” is pushing that figure up, and bringing a higher volume of lower-quality secondhand clothes. The drop in quality leads to more waste and erodes the traders’ earnings, sending many into debt.

Residents of South Africa’s biggest city, Johannesburg, were stunned by the first snowfall in over a decade on Monday, with some children seeing snow for the first time.While parts of South Africa regularly receive snow over the southern hemisphere winter months of June to August, Johannesburg last had snow in August 2012.

South of the city in Brackenhurst, a Reuters photographer saw children making snowballs and snow angels in a school’s grounds.

But for others, like delivery driver Chenjerai Murape whose motorbike would not start, the snow made life difficult.

A group of soldiers appeared on the west African country’s national television late on Wednesday, a few hours after the president had been detained.

Reading from a statement, Colonel Amadou Abdramane, seated and flanked by nine other officers wearing fatigues, said the defence and security forces had decided to “put an end to the regime that you know due to the deteriorating security situation and bad governance”.

He said the country’s borders were closed and all institutions of the republic suspended, and announced a national curfew. The soldiers warned against any foreign intervention.

Lying in the heart of the Sahel, Niger is two-thirds desert and persistently ranks near to or at the bottom of the UN’s human development index, a benchmark of prosperity. It has a growing population of 22.4 million, driven by a birthrate averaging seven children for every woman.

Russia is hosting a two-day summit with the African continent designed to portray Moscow as a great power despite crippling western sanctions and growing unease in the global south over the country’s destabilising war in Ukraine.

Commenting on Putin’s promises of free grain, the UN secretary general, António Guterres, said a “handful of donations to some countries” would not correct the dramatic impact the end of the deal would have.

Observers believe that Putin will use this week’s summit to push a plan to supply grain directly to Africa and cut Ukraine out of the global market. Moscow has previously used the grain issue to find allies in the global south for its war in Ukraine and gather support against western sanctions.

From the beginning of next year, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Argentina, the UAE and Ethiopia will join the current five members – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – it was announced at a summit in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Ethiopia became the only low-income country in the group. Its prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, described it as “a great moment” for his country.

Nearly two dozen countries had formally applied to join the group, but there had to be consensus among its existing five members for candidate countries to be admitted.

Có diễn đàn có mấy đứa dư luận viên Việt Nam hăng tiết vịt nói rằng BRICS + lên ngôi, tư bản G7 giãy chết đành đạch rồi. Có đứa còn đi xa hơn, đem BRICS ra so sánh với NATO. Oách đờ heo men. Cái đó đúng là có tri thức mà không có trí thức. hihihi.

BRICS thành lập đã hơn một thập niên rồi. Tổng hợp các nền kinh tế quốc dân làm toán cộng thì thấy có vẻ bắt đầu ngang ngang hoặc thậm chí mạnh hơn G7 về tổng sản lượng nội địa. Nhưng lượm thêm một thành viên kiểu Á Căn Đình, nghĩa là "nợ ngập mặt", "nghèo rớt mồng tơi" thì không hiểu có thêm lợi lộc gì ngoài muốn tìm các con nợ, vốn đang nghèo để lợi dụng cho dễ thôi.

Theo mình, G7 nên nhường phần cho tiền cứu khổ cứu nạn cho BRICS mỗi năm. BRICS kinh tế mạnh mà. Nên làm điều gì có phước cho cộng đồng từ cái thịnh vượng mình đang có mới là có bản lĩnh.

Morocco experienced an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 in the coastal city of Agadir in 1960, which killed a third of the city’s population, an estimated 15,000 people. In 2004, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the town of Al Hoceima on Morocco’s northern coastline, killing more than 600 people and making thousands homeless.

Despite the unexpected force of Saturday’s earthquake, many began to ask whether Morocco’s proximity to fault lines and history of earthquakes meant the state could have done more to prepare residents for a disaster of this scale, especially in remote villages.

Many, many buildings have collapsed.”

Video footage circulating on social media showed people pleading for help and screaming as muddy water engulfed their homes. Other video captured torrents sweeping away cars on streets, which had turned into rivers.
