Americans turning to gardening during Covid
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-price-gouging

From Maine and Vermont to Louisiana and West Virginia, gardeners have reported being in a pickle when it comes to finding the right size glass jars, the special lids to safely seal them, or the bands with which to screw them on. They’ve gone from store to store and some have given in to paying higher prices online.

The canning industry has seen an unprecedented demand for supplies as more consumers prepare meals at home during the pandemic, said a spokesperson for Newell Brands, owner of Ball, which produces Mason jars and other supplies.

More people established gardens or expanded their existing plots earlier this year out of initial fears of a possible food shortage or apprehension about going to the grocery store during the pandemic.

Cut out karaoke to help Covid fight, urges Philippines governor
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...pines-governor

The racket caused by karaoke, a favourite pastime in the country, has prompted the governor of the province to urge residents to report noisy neighbours through a special hotline.

Disruption caused by karaoke – popular at family gatherings, birthday parties and at bars – isn’t new.

In 2017, Cavite province ruled that karaoke systems could not be played past 10pm in residential areas, apart from on special holidays. Yet during the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced many to stay home, it appears to be a growing annoyance.

Minorities much more likely than white people to test positive for Covid – study
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ve-covid-study

The research, published on Wednesday by Epic Health Research Network Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), analysed the health record data of about 50 million patients from 53 health systems across 21 states.

It reported that Hispanic patients were more than two and a half times more likely than white patients to have a positive result. Black and Asian patients, meanwhile, were nearly twice as likely as white people to get a positive result.

Hospitalisation and death rates were dramatically higher for people of colour with coronavirus. Among Hispanic patients, hospitalisations were more than four times higher than for white people, while among Black patients it was more than triple the rate, the report said.

And death rates were more than double among Black and Hispanic patients what they were for white patients.

Meanwhile, a new poll shows how the economic impact is disproportionately affecting people of colour in the US.

The research, published on Wednesday by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, found that 72% of Latino households are having serious financial problems during the pandemic – double the number of white households.

Over half of Black and Native American respondents, 60% and 55% respectively, reported economic hardship and 37% of Asian households.

Face shields ineffective at trapping aerosols, says Japanese supercomputer
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...er-coronavirus

Plastic face shields are almost totally ineffective at trapping respiratory aerosols, according to modelling in Japan, casting doubt on their effectiveness in preventing the spread of coronavirus.

A simulation using Fugaku, the world’s fastest supercomputer, found that almost 100% of airborne droplets of less than 5 micrometres in size escaped through plastic visors of the kind often used by people working in service industries.

One micrometre is one millionth of a metre.

In addition, about half of larger droplets measuring 50 micrometres found their way into the air, according to Riken, a government-backed research institute in the western city of Kobe.

As some countries have attempted to open up their economies, face shields are becoming a common sight in sectors that emphasise contact with the public, such as shops and beauty salons.

Makoto Tsubokura, team leader at Riken’s centre for computational science, said the simulation combined air flow with the reproduction of tens of thousand of droplets of different sizes, from under 1 micrometre to several hundred micrometres.

He cautioned against wearing face visors as an alternative to masks.

“Judging from the results of the simulation, unfortunately the effectiveness of face guards in preventing droplets from spreading from an infected person’s mouth is limited compared with
    masks,” Tsubokura told the Guardian.

'Close to 100% accuracy': Helsinki airport uses sniffer dogs to detect Covid
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...t-for-covid-19

In the university’s preliminary tests, dogs – which have previously been used to detect diseases such as cancer and diabetes – were able to identify the virus with nearly 100% accuracy, even days before before a patient developed symptoms.

Scientists are not yet sure what exactly it is that the dogs sniff when they detect the virus. A French study published in June concluded that there was “very high evidence” that the sweat odour of Covid-positive people was different to that of those who did not have the virus, and that dogs could detect that difference.

Spanish councillor uses face mask to 'fake speaking English'
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...-what-it-seems

a councillor from the city in eastern Spain did his hometown proud with a minute-long speech in stunningly fluent English and without the slightest trace of a Spanish accent.

“Valencia and its people are very committed to European innovation and we are at your disposal,” an assured Carlos Galiana told the European commission at the end of his address on Thursday.

The only problem was that, despite the movements of his mouth beneath his mask, the voice was not his and Galiana was being dubbed by a native English speaker.
