Gimme shell-ter: Thai hermit crabs face housing crisis
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...housing-crisis

The population of the crustaceans, which protect themselves by wearing and living inside the discarded shells of other animals, has exploded on some islands in the Mu Koh Lanta national park, and marine biologists believe the lack of tourists could be a factor.

“The reason [we need shells] is because of surging numbers of hermit crabs, I think tens of thousands,” the national park director, Veerasak Srisatjung, told AFP.

Veerasak said authorities had detected a shell shortage about a week ago. Some crabs, having outgrown their previous homes and moved into pieces of rubbish such as cans, glass bottles or caps.

The park authority urged people to post or courier donations of cone-shaped shells to its office in Krabi province.

So far about 200kg of shells have been pledged, and volunteers will help distribute them at a special Thai Father’s Day event on 5 December.

The marine biologist Thamasak Yeemin from Ramkhamhaeng University agreed that the population boom could be linked to the tourism shutdown.

“If there’s a low number of tourists and fewer activities in the coastal areas that might be a possible factor explaining the high survival rates,” he told AFP, adding that weather, sea currents, plankton supply and predators were other influencing factors.

Hermit crab mà tiếng Việt gọi là ốc mượn hồn thì sai hết cả ba chữ: nó là cua hoặc tôm, mà nó đi lượm vỏ chứ đâu có mượn cái hồn. "Cua lượm vỏ" mới đúng.

Meet 'Jo Baiden,' the internet-famous mayor of a small Japanese town

Mayor Yutaka Umeda's profile is posted to the website of Yamato, a small town of 15,000 people in Kumamoto Prefecture. | KYODO

Kumamoto – The mayor of a small Japanese town has become an internet sensation after it was observed that the characters of his name can be read as "Jo Baiden," phonetically the same as the name of the winner in last week's U.S. presidential election.

Yutaka Umeda, 73, mayor of Yamato, Kumamoto Prefecture, was caught by surprise when his family told him that an alternate reading of his name had drawn attention online.

"I feel very close to him. It feels as though I've also won the election after hearing about (Democratic nominee Joe Biden's) projected win" over his rival, President Donald Trump, Umeda said Sunday.

Kanji characters usually have several phonetic readings. The mayor's family name comprises characters meaning "plum" and "rice field," but while they are usually pronounced as "ume" and "da" in names — a fairly common one in Japan — they can also be read as "bai" and "den." The character for Yutaka, meanwhile, is more commonly read as "jo."

Umeda said he has received a flood of messages following the former U.S. vice president's election win.

With Biden set to take office next year, Umeda hopes the event will also be a chance for his small town of about 15,000 to bask in the spotlight.

"Being the president of a superpower like the United States and a mayor of Yamato — the scale (of our jobs) is completely different, but I'd like to think of ways to promote the town," he said.

When former Biden's running mate, Barack Obama, was elected president in 2008, the city of Obama, in Fukui Prefecture, generated headlines in both Japan and abroad.

Local residents established a group to support Obama and created merchandise featuring his likeness. The then-mayor of the coastal city even expressed hope that Obama would become a special honorary citizen.

When the president visited Japan in 2009, he even addressed the city during a speech, saying, "And of course, I could not come here without sending my greetings and gratitude to the citizens of Obama, Japan."

Japanese town deploys Monster Wolf robots to deter bears
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...to-deter-bears

The town of Takikawa, on the northern island of Hokkaido, purchased and installed two Monster Wolf robots after bears were found roaming neighbourhoods in September. City officials said there had been no bear encounters since.

Bear sightings in Japan are at a five-year high and occur mostly in rural areas in western and northern Japan, the national broadcaster NHK has reported. There have been dozens of attacks so far in 2020, two of them fatal, prompting the government to convene an emergency meeting last month to address the threat.

The Monster Wolf has four legs, a shaggy body, blond mane and red, glowing eyes. When its motion detectors are activated, it moves its head, flashes lights and emits sounds ranging from wolfish howling to machinery noises. The maker, Ohta Seiki, has sold about 70 units since 2018.

Japan shop deploys robot to check people are wearing face masks
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...ing-face-masks

Robovie, developed by the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International in Kyoto, is able to pick out customers who aren’t wearing masks and politely ask them to cover up. It can also intervene when they fail to socially distance while queuing up to pay.

The trial, which began last week at the club shop of Cerezo Osaka, a professional football team, will run until at least the end of the month.

Pope's account liked photo of Brazilian model
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...alia-garibotto

Garibotto, who has 2.4 million Instagram followers, is also reported to have joked: “At least I’m going to heaven.”

Citing sources close to the Vatican’s press office, CNA said an investigation was under way to determine how the photo came to be liked.

A team of people manage the pope’s various social media accounts.

A Vatican spokesperson told the Guardian: “We can exclude that the ‘like’ came from the Holy See, and it has turned to Instagram for explanations.”

The pope is not like Donald Trump, he’s not sitting around using his phone or computer to tweet all day long,” said Robert Mickens, the Rome-based editor of the English-language edition of the Catholic daily newspaper La Croix.

Melania Trump's hometown in Slovenia hopes its fame will last
    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55004553

For the past four years, the people here have leveraged minor international fame to promote their central Slovenian town and its products. But now the Trump presidency is entering its final weeks, there is the sense of the end of an era for Sevnica as well.

Inside the stout 16th-Century castle on the hill above the town, a collection of local products branded "First Lady" are on sale. To some it might seem like cashing in, and what Melania Trump might make of having a salami named in her honour is anybody's guess.

Despite Mrs Trump's impending departure from the White House, Sevnica has decided to continue to offer its First Lady products, and even add more items to the range.

Ông ăn chả, bà ăn salami.
