Amsterdam’s famed red light district has reopened after a long coronavirus shutdown, with sex workers and clients having to observe new rules to prevent infection.

The Netherlands ordered all brothels closed in mid-March and had originally planned to keep them shut until September, but recently brought the date forward as Covid-19 cases dropped.Felicia Anna, a 34-year-old Romanian sex worker, said it “felt very good” to be back at work.

She added that “most of us will avoid face to face, so no kissing”.

Felicia Anna said that “after the customer leaves the room, we’re going to disinfect everything he might have touched, bed, sink, the toilet if he used the toilet, the doorknobs, everything”.

But she said that sex workers were already well versed in hygiene, adding: “We already dealt with much bigger diseases than corona.”

A municipal councillor in northern Spain has offered to resign after inadvertently broadcasting video of himself showering during an online council meeting that was being livestreamed.

Earlier this week councillors in Torrelavega gathered online to hash out some of the latest issues facing the municipality of some 52,000 people. Following the protocols put in place as the coronavirus tightened its grip on Spain, half a dozen councillors dialed into the video chat at 8am, streaming it online for journalists and residents.

As the meeting stretched past midday, Bernardo Bustillo, who works part-time with the municipality, began to fret that he wouldn’t have time to shower and shuttle his daughter to her commitments before heading to his other job as a swim instructor.

He came up with what seemed to him the perfect solution to multitask; hauling the computer into the bathroom and minimising the chat screen so that he could listen in on the meeting as he showered.

But like a 2020-specific anxiety dream, as his colleagues considered plans to clean-up a local river, an image of him showering appeared on bottom left of the screen, much of it blurred by a pane of frosted glass.

The sound of running water drowned out the constant ringing of his mobile phone, as frantic colleagues tried to warn him that the camera was still rolling.

A wave of discomfort rippled across the video chat as he got out of the shower. “Say something to Berni. Say something to him quickly,” one colleague could be heard saying. Another asked: “We can’t disconnect him or do something?” The mayor swiftly took control, bringing an end to the meeting.

An Indian man said he paid about $4,000 for a bespoke gold face mask to protect him from the coronavirus raging in the country.

The precious metal covering weighs 60 grams (two ounces) and took craftsmen eight days to make, said businessman Shankar Kurhade, from the western city of Pune.

"It is a thin mask and has tiny pores that is helping me to breathe," Shankar told AFP.

Indonesia’s agriculture minister has been condemned by health experts for claiming that a necklace made from eucalyptus can help prevent transmission of Covid-19.

Syahrul Yasin Limpo had said the necklace, if worn for 30 minutes, could help destroy much of the coronavirus. It had been developed by the agriculture ministry, along with roll-ons and a mini-inhaler, and would be mass-produced in August, he said.

Facing criticism from infectious disease specialists, the ministry has since backtracked and said the products will not be advertised as having the ability to prevent or cure Covid-19. Instead, they will be classified as herbal products, the ministry’s research and development department head, Fadjry Djufry, said on Monday.

The Indonesian health minister, Terawan Agus Putranto, however, has continued to defend the necklace. People who wear one may feel more confident, he told Kompas TV, and this could boost their immune systems. He previously said prayers had helped prevent the spread of coronavirus in the country.
