US abandons plan to offer Christmas performers early vaccine
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...mas-performers
Officials had reportedly planned to provide workers playing the festive roles at malls, stores and theme parks with immunisation, in return for help promoting a Covid-19 vaccine as part of a $250m taxpayer-funded public service advertising campaign.
But the plan, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, has been scrapped.
On Monday an HHS spokeswoman told the Guardian the Santa collaboration “will not be happening”, adding that the health secretary, Alex Azar, “had no knowledge of these outreach discussions”.
Ric Erwin, chairman of the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas, which has about 650 members, told the Guardian: “To say that we were disappointed is just scratching the surface. This was in fact our greatest hope to help this country end the worst year ever on the best note possible.”
It will be his first break from Christmas since becoming a Santa in 2002, but after his wife lost her father to Covid-19 in May, he promised he would take “zero chances in bringing the virus home”.
“Not to mention the fact that our clientele, the children, are notorious vectors for all things infectious,” he said.
In a 12-minute phone call, recorded by Erwin and provided to the Journal, Caputo said the vaccines would probably be approved by mid-November and given to frontline workers before Thanksgiving, which this year falls on 26 November.
In an excerpt from the call, Caputo can be heard saying: “If you and your colleagues are not essential workers, I don’t know what is.”
Erwin enthusiastically responds: “Ho ho ho … I love you.”
Vowing to bring 50 costumed Santas to an event in southern California, Erwin told Caputo: “My friend, we will pull this sleigh uphill ourselves if we have to.”
Caputo also said he “cannot wait to tell the president”, who he said was “going to love this”.

Two men arrested in India over £70,000 'Aladdin's lamp' con
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...addin-lamp-con
Two men who allegedly duped a doctor into buying an “Aladdin’s lamp” for more than £70,000 – even conjuring up a fake genie – have been arrested in India, according to officials.Laeek Khan approached police in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh after he realised the lamp did not have any magical powers, as described in the popular folk tale about Aladdin and his wish-granting genie that appears when it is rubbed.
“The cheats had struck a deal for much more but the doctor had paid about 7m rupees (£72,000),” Amit Rai, a senior officer, told AFP. He said the men were arrested on Thursday and were remanded in custody ahead of charges being filed.
“The wife of one of these men was also involved in the fraud. She is on the run,” Rai said.
In his complaint, filed last Sunday, Khan said one of the men pretended to be an occultist and made a “jinn”, or supernatural figure, appear from the lamp, local media reported. But when Khan asked if he could touch the genie or take the lamp home, they refused, saying it might cause him harm, the complaint stated.
Eventually they sold the lamp to him, promising it would bring health, wealth and good fortune. Khan said he later realised the “genie” was actually just one of the men in disguise.
“The men have also cheated other families using the same modus operandi. The total amount of money involved runs into several million rupees,” Rai said.

A metro train that overran the stop blocks at a station outside Rotterdam has been left balancing 10 metres above ground on the plastic tail of a whale sculpture.
The artwork, Saved by the Whale’s Tail, was erected in 2002 by the De Akkers station in Spijkenisse on the outskirts of Rotterdam, in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is made of reinforced polyester.

Denmark announces cull of 15 million mink over Covid mutation fears
https://www.theguardian.com/environm...mutation-fears
At a press conference on Wednesday, the Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said 12 people are already infected with the mutated virus and that the mink are now considered a public health risk.“The mutated virus in mink may pose a risk to the effectiveness of a future vaccine,” Frederiksen said.
The authorities and breeders have already been culling the animals over the past few weeks in a bid to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Reuters reported that Denmark’s health minister said about half of 783 infected people in northern Denmark, home to a large number of mink breeders, had been found to have infections stemming from the farms.
Denmark is the world’s largest producer of mink fur and has 15 to 17 million animals on about 1,100 farms. According to reports, the latest figures from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, say Covid-19 infections have been found on more than 200 mink farms. The figures were confirmed by a Danish police press officer.
Finnish fur auctioneer Magnus Ljung, CEO of Saga Furs, was watching the Danish announcement. “It’s a shock. They will kill all mink in Denmark. They are talking about the risk of Covid-19 mutating in the mink, and going from mink to humans, and potentially affecting a future human vaccine.”
Ljung estimated the value of the 2020 mink population in Denmark to be between €350m and €400m (£270m-£360m).“What we really need to do is end mink farming entirely and retrain the farmers,” said Birgitte Damm, policy adviser and vet with NGO Animal Protection Denmark.
Speaking from Amsterdam, Dr Joanna Swabe, Humane Society International/Europe’s senior director of public affairs, said: “Denmark is one of the largest fur producers on the planet, so a total shutdown of all Danish mink fur farms amid spiralling Covid-19 infections is a significant development.
“Although not a ban on fur farming, this move signals the end of suffering for millions of animals confined to small wire cages on Danish fur farms solely for the purposes of a trivial fur fashion that no one needs. We commend the Danish prime minister on her decision to take such an essential and science-led step to protect Danish citizens from the deadly coronavirus.”
