Japan forced to prop up yen after bank keeps to negative interest rates
    https://www.theguardian.com/business...interest-rates

Japan’s vice-finance minister for international affairs, Masato Kanda, told reporters the government had “taken decisive action” to address the yen’s sudden fall on the foreign exchange market.

The intervention, which lifted the yen by 2% against the dollar back to 141.2, showed that Tokyo had lost patience with the currency’s steady slide and highlighted the impact that the surging US dollar is having on major economies.

The greenback has strengthened steadily this year, partly because US interest rates have been rising faster than in other countries. Fears that the global economy is weakening as inflation soars have also driven traders into the safe-haven of the dollar, sending the euro to a 20-year low, and the pound to its weakest point in 37 years.

Spanish police raid outdoor cocaine lab
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...of-drug-a-week

According to the statement, the Spanish citizen alleged to be the leader of the gang oversaw a business importing sacks of cement whose contents were laced with the cocaine that was then extracted at the farm near Madrid using a carefully hoarded supply of chemicals.

The alleged leader tasked a Dominican citizen with running the lab and organising the distribution of the cocaine. He, in turn, recruited three Colombians who came to Spain to recover the cocaine from the cement.

“These people, known as ‘cooks’, are usually hired for a specific operation and charge according to the number of kilos extracted before returning to their home country,” the statement added.

Police said the operation also reflected the deep knowledge of the “cooks”. Rather than using large quantities of chemicals that are subject to international stringent international checks, they employed only petrol, ammonia and water to recover the cocaine. A drone was also used to guard the lab.

Canola field selfies: ‘dangerous’ social media trend
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...al-media-trend

A social media trend where eager tourists drive out to flowering canola fields, jump fences and seek out the perfect selfie is becoming “dangerous” and a growing biosecurity risk for farmers.

Each spring, social media platforms like Instagram are saturated with photos of people posing in a sea of yellow canola flowers with captions such as “The best things in life are free” and “Life is full of beauty, sometimes we have to slow down to notice it”.

Flanery said he’s witnessed a number of instances where people have parked in “dangerous positions” on the road or have trespassed on his property – but one experience in particular left him “flabbergasted”.

According to Flanery, one Boorowa farmer had people drive into his paddock and cut the fence to get in because they wanted photos of them hanging out of their car.

“It’s equivalent to someone jumping into your front yard in Sydney to take a photo with your flowers. That’s my yard – get out.”

Backlash as French ministers wrap up warm to set energy example
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...energy-example

French ministers have been photographed in puffer jackets and polo necks instead of suits, in an attempt to set an example on wrapping up warm as the nation struggles to afford heating this winter.

After the president Macron said people would need to save energy and lower their heating, the prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, raised eyebrows this week when she held an office meeting seated at her desk wearing a zipped-up puffer jacket.

But political opponents attacked the government’s winter wardrobe messaging as nannying and out of touch with people’s struggles over the energy crisis and cost of living.

The far-right Marine Le Pen, who heads the largest opposition party in parliament, made a comparison to the French queen Marie Antoinette, tweeting: “Don’t have enough heating? Let them wear cashmere.”

‘middle finger’ health campaign in New Zealand
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...in-new-zealand

The associate health minister, Ayesha Verrall, launched the “Stick it to Hep C” campaign in July, to raise awareness over the virus, which kills roughly 200 New Zealanders a year.

The campaign included videos, outdoor posters and online material featuring actors raising their middle finger to another person, while smiling. The advertisement then goes on to show an actor having his middle finger pricked for a blood test, to determine if he has the blood-borne virus.

But the Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint describing the advertising imagery as “deeply offensive”.

US man accused of smuggling three reptiles in his pants
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...order-new-york

A New York City man faces up to 20 years in prison for allegedly attempting to smuggle three large snakes across the US-Canada border – in his pants.

Queens resident Calvin Bautista, 36, is accused of hiding three Burmese pythons while on a bus crossing into the US at the Champlain port of entry in New York state on 15 July 2018, the Associated Press reported.

Sydney studio apartment with toilet in kitchen on market for $520 a week
    https://www.theguardian.com/australi...for-520-a-week

This tiny apartment – previously dubbed a “room with a poo” – is currently listed for $520 a week.

The studio, in the inner Sydney suburb of Surry Hills, redefines open plan living with its bright red tiling in the kitchen, a polkadot couch, and a toilet – all in the same space.

Only a set of semi-frosted glass doors separate the kitchen from the “throne room”. In this apartment, your business becomes everybody’s business.

‘Made by white labor’: the vintage Levi’s
    https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/...on-white-labor

The jeans, discovered in a mineshaft a few years ago by Michael Allen Harris, a historian of denim, date to the 1880s. They sold this month at a New Mexico auction for $76,000, the Wall Street Journal reported – among the highest prices jeans have ever fetched.

The buyers, who each sell vintage clothing, were able to identify the jeans’ age thanks to a number of clues: a missing logo stamp, suspender buttons and a single pocket on the seat, among other indicators.

Another mark of the jeans’ age: a label inside says they are “the only kind made by white labor”.

That message appeared after Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, amid widespread anti-Chinese racism, particularly as the economy struggled in the 1870s.

Such bigotry was particularly prevalent in the west. San Francisco – home to Levi’s, founded in 1853 – drew a large number of Chinese immigrants in the 19th century, and, as Michael Luo wrote in the New Yorker last year, “white workers … began to see the Chinese as competition – first for gold and, later, for scarce jobs.”

    Iceberg lettuce outlasts Liz Truss
    https://www.theguardian.com/politics...asts-liz-truss

Seven days ago the Daily Star set up a webcam on the lettuce to see if it would have a longer shelf-life than the prime minister. To add to Truss’s humiliating resignation, the lettuce won.

As Truss made her resignation statement, those viewing the video on YouTube soared to more than 20,000.

When the prime minister confirmed her departure on Thursday lunchtime, a plastic gold crown was placed on the now browning leafy vegetable.

The caption changed from “Day Seven: Will Liz Truss outlast his lettuce?” to “The Lettuce Outlasted Liz Truss”. The national anthem was played to mark the lettuce’s triumph, and champagne was poured.

The lettuce was inundated with messages of congratulations, in a chat box beside the video. They included: “Lettuce Rejoice”, “Lettuce being having you”, “Lettuce for PM”, “Lettuce 1 -Truss 0”, “Truss sunk by an iceberg”.

Ngư trang: like a fish out of water

    ‘Fishless fish’
    https://www.theguardian.com/environm...enalu-wildtype

Cultivation starts by taking a small sample from a living fish species. Cells then multiply as they would in nature in the large vessels and eventually become fatty and lean parts of a fish fillet.

When grown indoors, cell-cultured seafood like salmon and tuna can be optimized for taste, texture and nutritional content, and cooked like traditional fish or eaten like sushi. But it remains unknown if consumers will embrace lab-grown fish.
