Video of a sun bear standing on its hind legs had circulated on social media, with people noting that its slender legs and folds of fur made it look like a human was acting the part of the bear.

Sun bears are the size of large dogs, standing at most 1.3 metres (50in) tall on their hind legs, compared with up to 2.8 metres for grizzlies and other species, according to the zoo.

Other Chinese zoos have been accused of trying to pass off dogs dyed to look like wolves or African cats, and donkeys painted to look like zebras.

Attendance numbers at Hangzhou zoo have risen by 30% to about 20,000 a day, with some people travelling overnight, since a video of the Malayan sun bear, named Angela, became a trending topic on Chinese social media over the weekend, Zhejiang-based Chao News reported.

The animal rights group Peta said the incident showed how all zoo animals, including this bear, should be moved to sanctuaries and wildlife reserves that “prioritise the wellbeing of animals”.

“These highly intelligent and social beings deserve to live freely and thrive in their natural environment, not used as mere spectacles for human entertainment,” Jason Baker, the Peta Asia vice-president, said in a statement on Tuesday.“

Carabinieri paramilitary police said Vincenzo La Porta, who was on Italy’s list of 100 most dangerous fugitives, was spotted in a photo of fans in a restaurant in Corfu celebrating Napoli clinched Italy’s top league championship a few weeks ago.

Police then went to Corfu to tail the 60-year-old fugitive, who had been on the run for 11 years.

La Porta has been convicted in absentia of criminal association, tax evasion and fraud, the police said.

According to the owner of a different restaurant on the island, La Porta had been working there as an assistant chef for the last month or so.

In the Savoie there is a ban on picking blooms of protected plants including certain species of lilies, cyclamen and, in some areas, arnica. To ensure the edelweiss can “bloom and grow forever” – as in The Sound of Music – picking its flowers is outlawed.

Visitors are allowed to collect génépi, an aromatic plant that is part of the sage family and can be used to produce a strong liqueur, but only up to 120 sprigs a day. Gathering daffodils, narcissi and carnations is limited to 20 stems a hiker each day.

The local authorities said 20 hikers had been given verbal warnings and told they would be fined up to €750 if they broke the regulations again.

For months, a wild turkey has been spotted roaming the rolling hills of Carmel, California, with a 30in arrow sticking through her chest. It hasn’t seemed to faze her.Local residents first began spotting the bird, who they’re calling Cupid, last winter. Since then, she has been photographed and filmed roosting in trees, foraging for grubs and evading predators and generally going about her business as if she hadn’t been impaled.



The SPCA has said it is also looking for more information about who might have shot the turkey. Hunting in the area is illegal, and locals suspect the arrow that pierced Cupid is a practice arrow rather than a hunting arrow meant to kill. “We felt terrible that somebody would be this cruel,” she said.

Brice Oligui Nguema, the general who led a coup last week that toppled Gabon’s 55-year-old ruling dynasty, has taken the oath of office as interim president and promised “free, transparent and credible elections” to restore civilian rule, though without giving a timeframe.
