Canada statue of John A MacDonald toppled by activists in Montreal

Activists in Montreal have pulled down a statue of Canada's first prime minister Sir John A MacDonald, who was linked to cruel policies that killed many indigenous people in the late 19th Century.

Video captured the moment the statue's head flew off and bounced on the pavement nearby.

Quebec's head of government condemned it as "unacceptable".

"Destroying parts of our history is not the solution," said François Legault.

No arrests have been made, according to Canadian broadcaster CBC.

MacDonald was prime minister of Canada for 19 years in the 1860s-1890s and is remembered for his nation-building policies but he also created the residential schools system.

For more than a century the system forcibly removed at least 150,000 indigenous children from their homes and sent them to state-funded boarding schools. Many children were abused and some died, and they were were forbidden from speaking their own language or practising their culture.

A government report in 2015 called the practice "cultural genocide".

He was accused of allowing famine and disease to kill many indigenous people and his government forced some First Nation communities to leave their traditional territories, withholding food until they did so.

Nearly all Black Lives Matter protests are peaceful despite Trump narrative

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...e-report-finds

The vast majority of the thousands of Black Lives Matter protests this summer have been peaceful, with more than 93% involving no serious harm to people or damage to property, according to a new report tracking political violence in the United States.

The new data on protests and the US government’s response comes from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project (Acled), an organization that has long tracked political violence and unrest in regions around the world, together with Princeton University’s Bridging Divides Initiative.

Between late May and the end of the August, Acled and Princeton researchers documented 7,750 demonstrations associated with the
Black Lives Matter movement in more than 2,000 different locations across the United States.

Government authorities were more likely to intervene in Black Lives Matter protests than in other demonstrations, and also more likely to intervene with force, like using teargas, rubber bullets and pepper spray or beating demonstrators with batons, the researchers found.

They documented 392 incidents this summer in which government authorities used force on Black Lives Matter demonstrators.

Police shoot 13-year-old boy with autism several times after mother calls for help
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...oy-autism-utah

Linden Cameron was recovering in a Utah hospital, his mother said, after suffering injuries to his shoulder, both ankles, his intestines and his bladder.

Golda Barton told KUTV she called 911 to request a crisis intervention team because her son, who has Asperger’s syndrome, was having an episode caused by “bad separation anxiety” as his mother went to work for the first time in more than a year.

“I said, ‘He’s unarmed, he doesn’t have anything, he just gets mad and he starts yelling and screaming,’” she said. “He’s a kid, he’s trying to get attention, he doesn’t know how to regulate.”

She added: “They’re supposed to come out and be able to de-escalate a situation using the most minimal force possible.”

Instead, she said, two officers went through the front door of the home and in less than five minutes were yelling “get down on the ground” before firing several shots.

“He’s a small child,” she said. “Why didn’t you just tackle him? He’s a baby. He has mental issues.”

Georgia deputy filmed punching Black man in front of children is fired

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...oderick-walker

Roderick Walker, 26, was arrested and beaten on Friday, after deputies pulled over the vehicle he was riding in with his girlfriend, their five-month-old child and his stepson for an alleged broken taillight, attorney Shean William said on Sunday.

The deputies asked for identification, Williams said, then demanded Walker get out of the vehicle when he questioned why they needed it since he wasn’t driving.

The subsequent arrest, captured on video by a bystander and shared widely, shows two deputies on top of Walker, one repeatedly punching him. Walker’s girlfriend screams and tells the deputies Walker said he can’t breathe. A child in the vehicle yells: “Daddy.”

Alabama city removes Confederate monument following vote
    https://sportsgrindentertainment.com...ollowing-vote/

Workers with the city of Anniston began removing the stone obelisk from the grassy median of a busy avenue late Sunday, city spokesman Jackson Hodges said Monday, and the work only took about 20 minutes.

The City Council voted 4-1 earlier this month to take down the monument to Confederate artillery officer John Pelham, who was from nearby Alexandria and died in battle in 1863.

Canada: outcry after video shows hospital staff taunting dying Indigenous woman
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...woman-hospital

A shocking video showing hospital staff in Canada taunting a dying Indigenous woman has left a community in mourning and renewed calls for the country to confront the realities of systemic racism.

Joyce Echaquan, a 37-year-old Atikamekw woman, arrived at a hospital in the Quebec city of Joliette on Monday, complaining of stomach pain.

The mother of seven had previously suffered similar issues and told staff she had a heart condition. Echaquan started live-streaming her experience on Facebook as her pain escalated, and staff at the hospital appeared indifferent to her pleas for help.

In the footage, Echaquan is seen grimacing as nurses call her “stupid as hell”. “Are you done acting stupid? Are you done?” asked one nurse in French as Echaquan moaned in pain.

“You made some bad choices, my dear,” another nurse said. “What are your children going to think, seeing you like this?”

“She’s good at having sex, more than anything else,” the first nurse said.

Indigenous leaders say the video exposes the grim realities of systemic racism that have long gone ignored throughout the country.

“Discrimination against First Nations people remains prevalent in the healthcare system and this needs to stop,” the Assembly of First Nations national chief, Perry Bellegarde, said in a statement.

The Quebec premier, François Legault, condemned the actions of the staff, telling reporters at least one of the nurses had been fired.

Black man led on rope by Texas police on horseback sues for $1m
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...man-horse-rope

A Black man who was led by a rope by two white officers on horseback has sued a south-east Texas city and its police department for $1m, saying he suffered humiliation and fear during his arrest.

A lawsuit filed last week in Galveston county district court on behalf of Donald Neely, 44, alleged the officers’ conduct was “extreme and outrageous”, both physically injuring Neely and causing him emotional distress, news outlets reported, citing the court documents.

Photos of the August 2019 encounter showed Neely being led by the officers on a rope linked to handcuffs – reminiscent of pictures showing slaves in chains.

Neely, who was homeless at the time, was sleeping on a sidewalk when he was arrested for criminal trespass and led around the block to a mounted patrol staging area. In body-camera video, one officer could be heard twice saying that leading Neely by rope down city streets would look “bad”.

The lawsuit accused the city and the department of negligence, and stated that the officers should have known Neely would consider it offensive to be led on the rope “as though he was a slave”.

“Neely felt as though he was put on display as slaves once were,” the lawsuit stated.

In a statement at the time, Galveston police chief Vernon Hale called the tactic a “trained technique and best practice in some scenarios”. However, he said he believed his officers “showed poor judgment”, adding that the department since changed its policy to prevent use of the technique.

A Texas Rangers investigation determined the officers didn’t break the law. Neely's criminal trespass charge was dismissed in court. His lawsuit also alleges malicious prosecution connected to the charge.

Twitter suspends accounts for posing as Black Trump supporters
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ump-supporters

Twitter has suspended a network of accounts claiming to be owned by Black supporters of Donald Trump and his re-election campaign due to spam and platform manipulation, it said Tuesday.

The company is investigating the activity and may suspend additional similar accounts if they are found to be violating its policies, a spokesperson said.

The Washington Post first reported on the investigation, citing more than a dozen accounts using identical, inauthentic language including the phrase: “YES IM BLACK AND IM VOTING FOR TRUMP!!!”

A review of some of the suspended accounts shows they often used stolen images to appear real. The accounts sometimes claimed to be owned by military veterans or members of law enforcement.
