Since last July, Hank has broken into at least 28 houses in and around the Tahoe Keys area. Described as “extremely food-habituated”, Hank has also caused extensive property damage in more than 30 documented cases. Local residents have filed at least 102 police reports about Hank.

“This is a bear that has lost all fear of people,” Tira said. “It’s a potentially dangerous situation.”

Ann Bryant, executive director of Bear League, a California-based wildlife rescue service, noted that it remained unclear how Hank acquired a human palate but affirmed that “he didn’t get fat like that eating berries and grubs”.

As efforts to trap Hank repeatedly fail, authorities have said they may need to consider euthanizing the bear, which they said was their “last option”.

“He just sits there and eats. He doesn’t attack them. He doesn’t growl. He doesn’t make rude faces … Why should this big dummy die?” Bryant told the Times.

The show focuses on the moment in August 2018 when the museum’s boss, Dr John Cambridge, arrived at work and did a double take when he realised his room, that ought to have been full of critters, was suddenly empty. Glass tanks were upended, shelves bare, displays cleared out. Thousands of live bugs, worth an estimated $50,000 (£38,000), had been stolen. It was the biggest insect heist in history.

It was set up by this ex-cop called Steve Kanya. Back in 1975, he had a pest-control company called Bug Off. As a publicity stunt, he’d put his ‘Catch of the Day’ in the store window – a huge cockroach, a termite colony or whatever. He noticed that cars kept pulling over to look at it and thought: ‘Huh, there’s something here.’ That developed into the first insectarium in the country.”

In the process of investigating this one-of-a-kind robbery, the Philadelphia police lifted the rock to find a seedy subculture of bug poachers, obsessive collectors and illicit smugglers. They soon surmised that, like half of workplace robberies, this was probably an inside job. But which of the museum’s eccentric staff was responsible? And where were the 7,000 bugs?

Nsenene are just one of 2,100 known edible insect species, a quarter of which are consumed in Africa. Most are highly prized – often costing more than beef or chicken by weight – and most are harvested from the wild.

While still in its infancy – most farms were set up in the last decade – the industry has clear potential: not only would insects be available all year, it would create jobs, help manage food waste, which is used as feed, and insect manure, or frass, could create fertilisers.

The World Bank has estimated that within a year, black soldier fly (BSF) farming could generate crude protein worth up to $2.6bn (£1.9bn) and biofertilisers worth up to $19.4bn. The process would recycle 200m tonnes of crop waste.

Although the bulk of existing farms produce insects for human consumption, there has been growing interest in insects as animal feed. Demand has trebled in the last decade in Kenya alone, and feed manufacturers have been increasingly looking for alternatives to soya and fishmeal, which are plagued by volatile prices, variable quality and poor environmental records.

Research suggests that animals fed insect protein, notably BSF, achieved faster growth rates and better-quality meat than with soya or fishmeal.

DNA evidence has shown that the 500-pound black bear the public had nicknamed Hank the Tank is, in fact, at least three not-so-little bears who have damaged more than 30 properties around Lake Tahoe in recent months.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife on Thursday said it would soon begin trapping bears in the South Lake Tahoe area to tag the animals and collect evidence for genetic analysis. The bears will be released in a “suitable habitat” and the agency said no trapped animals will be euthanised as part of the project.

South Africa grants permits to hunt 10 black rhinos

The South African government has granted annual hunting and export permits for big game including 10 critically endangered black rhinoceros and a similar number of leopards.

It also gave permission for more than 100 elephants to be killed, in keeping with international laws on the trade of endangered species, saying its elephant population was growing and that fewer than 0.3% were hunted each year.

Hunting is big business in South Africa, bringing in around 1.4bn rand ($92m) in 2019, the government said.

Scientists found that several brands contained endangered species but listed only vague ingredients such as “ocean fish”, meaning that consumers are often oblivious.

“The majority of pet owners are likely lovers of nature, and we think most would be alarmed to discover that they could be unknowingly contributing to the overfishing of shark populations,” said the study authors, Ben Wainwright and Ian French, of Yale-NUS College, Singapore.

Of the 144 samples sequenced, 45 – roughly a third – contained shark DNA. The most frequently identified species were blue shark, silky shark and whitetip reef shark.
