Yellowstone park officials kill baby bison after man picked up animal
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ill-bison-calf

The calf became separated from its mother when the herd crossed the Lamar river in north-eastern Yellowstone on Saturday.

The unidentified man pushed the struggling calf up from the river and onto a roadway, park officials said.
Human interference with young wildlife can cause animals to shun their offspring. Park rangers tried repeatedly to reunite the calf with the herd but were unsuccessful.

At one point, visitors saw the calf walking up to and following cars and people. This created a hazard, so park staff killed the animal.

Park officials are investigating the bison calf incident. The suspect was a white male in his 40s or 50s who was wearing a blue shirt and black pants, the statement said.

Black bear takes 60 cupcakes from US bakery
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...-scaring-staff

Workers at Taste by Spellbound in the town of Avon were loading cakes into a van for delivery on Wednesday when the bear showed up.

Surveillance video obtained by WTNH shows bakery workers walking around the side of the business to try to scare the bear, but then running away after it scares them.

The video shows the bear dragging a container of cupcakes from the garage into the parking lot. Stephens said the bear ate 60 cupcakes.
    Happy ending.

Tin vui cho dân làm IT: đi chăn dê

New overtime rules for goatherds could increase pay to $14,000 a month
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...employment-law

Companies typically put about one herder in charge of 400 goats. Many of the herders in California are from Peru and live in employer-provided trailers near grazing sites.

But a state agency has ruled that’s no longer allowed, meaning that goatherds would be subject to the same labor laws as other farm workers.

That would mean goatherds would be entitled to ever higher pay – up to $14,000 a month. Last year a budget trailer bill delayed that pay requirement for one year, but it’s set to take effect on 1 January 2024 if nothing is done to change the law.

Over 500 dolphins killed in Faroe Islands since hunt resumed in May
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...nt-resumed-may

In the Faroese tradition known as grindadráp, or grind for short, hunters surround pilot whales and dolphins with a wide semi-circle of fishing boats and drive them into a shallow bay where they are beached. Fishers on the shore slaughter them with knives.

Every summer, images of the bloody hunt make headlines around the world and are met with outrage among animal rights defenders who consider it barbaric.

The environmental NGO Sea Shepherd, which managed to disrupt the 2014 hunt with its boats, criticised the fact that Danish navy vessels were authorised to intervene to block environmentalists.

    Iceland suspends annual whale hunt
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...rsial-practice

Iceland’s government has said it is suspending this year’s whale hunt until the end of August due to animal welfare concerns, a move that is likely to bring the controversial practice to an end.

Animal rights groups and environmentalists hailed the decision, with the Humane Society International calling it “a major milestone in compassionate whale conservation”.

Recent monitoring by Iceland’s Food and Veterinary Authority on the fin whale hunt found that the killing of the animals took too long based on the main objectives of the Animal Welfare Act.

Shocking video clips broadcast by the veterinary authority showed a whale’s agony as it was hunted for five hours.

giant African land snails prompts quarantine in south Florida
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...ida-quarantine

The invasive snails have voracious appetites and consume at least 500 species of plants, according to Florida’s department of agriculture, which is fearful for the state’s lucrative growing industries of citrus and other fruits and vegetables.

The snails are illegal to import or possess in the US without a permit, and authorities have been trying for years to eradicate them. They can damage buildings, as well as destroying crops, and in some quarters are even considered a delicacy.

Invasions have occurred in other areas of Florida on an almost annual basis since. Pasco county was placed under quarantine last June after more than a thousand of the snails, females of which can produce up to 2,500 eggs a year, were discovered in New Port Richey.

    tiny flying bugs swarming city
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...wildfire-smoke

Since Wednesday, New Yorkers running, biking, walking or on subways, have reported tiny insects, moving in cloud-like swarms, around parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, in some cases making it hard to breathe

“They are aphids not gnats/midges/flies,” Sorkin said in a email. “I don’t know the species, unfortunately.”

The insects currently worrying New Yorkers are simply aphids transitioning to their winged stage, Grimadi told the outlet.
“When a population becomes very large … the emergence of winged morphs is impressive,” he said. “The good news? It means we have a healthy environment! No pesticides!”

    ‘graphic’ dolphin mating scene
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...n-mating-scene

The nature series Our Big Blue Backyard drew the ire of one viewer who successfully complained to the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA). In the offending scene, a female dolphin is targeted by a pack of male dolphins that mate with her.

“She’s trapped at the surface, and the males take turns. Once they’ve all mated with her, they leave her alone,” the narrator says, accompanied by underwater footage of the encounter and dramatic music.

The BSA said the footage included “the male dolphins swarming around the female with their genitalia visible, and at one point a male visibly entered the female … accompanied by audio of dolphin cries”.
