Paul Gascoigne says he is a ‘sad drunk’ and lives in his agent’s spare room
https://www.theguardian.com/football...ent-spare-room
The former England midfielder, four years after having surgery to prevent him from consuming alcohol, says he continues to drink, often alone at home. He says he “let myself down” by turning to alcohol after he finished his playing career.
“I used to be a happy drunk, I ain’t any more … I’m a sad drunk,” Gascoigne told the High Performance podcast.
Recognised as one of the most talented English players of all time, Gascoigne was a massive cultural figure during the 1990s, but his life since has become publicly defined by his addictions. He helped England to a World Cup semi-final in 1990 on the way to earning 57 caps. His club career included spells at Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers, Everton and Middlesbrough.

Women’s ski race marred by drunk fans fighting
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/20...-fans-fighting
The Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported that several fights broke out, with some fans storming the barriers towards the ski slope and falling over a fence there. In total, 130 individuals aged 16 to 20 reportedly required assistance from the Red Cross station in the area, either due to injuries or intoxication.
Swedish competitor, Moa Lundgren, told the newspaper Expressen that she had sensed a booze-fuelled atmosphere as she raced. “It really smelled of alcohol and something sweet out on the track,” she said.
“It was a naval battle,” Lundgren added, using a common Scandinavian expression for drunken chaos. Organisers will be determined to avoid a repeat of Saturday’s scenes when the men’s 50km race takes place at the same venue on Sunday.

Ukrainians embrace Usyk’s boxing victory
https://www.theguardian.com/world/ar...oxing-champion
From the capital, Kyiv, to the heavily attacked region of Kharkiv, news of Oleksandr Usyk’s win over Tyson Fury brought war-weary Ukrainians a rare and very welcome moment of victory and celebration.Usyk, who became the first undisputed world heavyweight champion this century after his victory in Riyadh in the early hours of Sunday, said his triumph did not belong to him alone.
“It’s for my God, my supporters, my country, the Ukrainian soldiers, Ukrainian mothers and fathers, children,” he said.
That sentiment was echoed by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy. “The Ukrainians hit hard! And in the end, all our opponents will be defeated,” he wrote on Telegram soon after the fight. Zelenskiy added that Usyk’s success showed that “Ukrainian endurance and strength give birth to Ukrainian victory”.
