Germany players in 'Human Rights' message ahead of World Cup qualifier

    Thu, March 25, 2021, 10:47 PM

Germany's players pose for a group photo with the wording "Human rights" on their T-shirts prior to the their World Cup qualifier with Iceland

Germany's national team lined up in T-shirts which spelled the message 'Human Rights' before their World Cup qualifier against Iceland on Thursday, less than two years before the finals are controversially staged in Qatar.

"We have the World Cup coming up and there will be discussions about it.... we wanted to show we are not ignoring that," Leon Goretzka, who scored the opening goal in a 3-0 win, told RTL.

"We wrote the letters ourselves. We have a large reach - and we can use it to set an example for the values we want to stand for. That was clear."

Joachim Loew's German team echoed a similar demonstration from Norway, who on Wednesday donned T-shirts with the message 'Human rights, on and off the pitch' in support of migrant workers building World Cup venues in Qatar for the 2022 finals.

The gesture, before Norway's World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar, came after several Norwegian clubs spoke out in favour of a boycott of the 2022 finals.

UK daily newspaper The Guardian recently claimed that more than 6,500 workers have died on stadium construction sites since the World Cup was awarded to Qatar in 2010.

In Germany, a poll by magazine Spiegel says two thirds of those asked were in favour of boycotting Qatar 2022.

A leading German supporters group ProFans has called on the German FA to withdraw the national team from the 2022 World Cup finals.

The German Football Association (DFB) has so far only said it will continue voicing concerns.

Fifa will not take action against Norway over human right stance

Norway will not be punished by Fifa for stepping up their protests about human rights violations in Qatar on Wednesday night by lining up for their game against Gibraltar with T-shirts bearing the slogan “Human rights – on and off the pitch”.

“Fifa believes in the freedom of speech, and in the power of football as a force for good,” football’s global governing body said. “No disciplinary proceedings in relation to this matter will be opened by Fifa.”

There has been a debate in Norway in the past few weeks about whether the Norwegian Football Federation should boycott the 2022 World Cup in Qatar because of the poor working conditions for migrant workers in the country and human rights concerns.

The top-flight club Tromsø started the discussion by stating Norway should boycott the tournament and several other clubs have since followed suit.

Before the World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar the Norway captain, Martin Ødedegaard, hinted that the players would make some kind of statement before the game and when the coach, Ståle Solbakken, met the media 80 minutes before the game he was wearing a T-shirt with the message “Respect – on and off the pitch”.

The players wore the same message during warmup before swapping to the one saying “Human rights – on and off the pitch”. Solbakken told Norwegian TV2: “This is a little bit what we have been talking about, to put the focus on some of that that has been a discussion off the pitch. The boys were keen to do this and I am here as an example of that.”

Norway won the match 3-0, thanks to goals from Alexander Sørloth, Cristian Thorstvedt and Jonas Svensson. – Guardian
