Shock for all fans of the classic film: Cinderella is dead!

Shock for all fans of the cult fairy tale film “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”: The Czech actress Libuse Safrankova (“Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”) died at the age of only 68 years. The CNN Prima News reported on Wednesday, citing her son.

Safrankova achieved great popularity with the lead role in the fairy tale film “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella” from 1973. The romantic flick, a co-production with the East German DEFA, has been an inseparable part of the Christmas program on German television for decades.

She made her breakthrough with “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”

Safrankova grew up in Slapanice, Czechoslovakia, graduated from the Drama Department of the Brno Conservatory in 1971 and joined the Prague Drama Club in 1972. After her first film roles, she achieved her breakthrough in 1973 with “Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella”.

She then took part in almost 150 cinema and television films, for example in “The Little Mermaid” and “The Prince and the Evening Star”. She was also a member of a chamber ensemble on the theater stage in Prague for many years. In the 1996 drama “Kolya”, which won an Oscar for best foreign film, she played the role of the singer Klara. After 2000, she mainly stood in front of the camera in front of Czech television.

Since 1976 Libuše Šafránková was married to the actor Josef Abrhám, with whom she had a son. The two were already grandparents of four. “My grandchildren are my greatest asset,” said Safrankova. In the last few years of her career she even turned down film roles in order to be able to take care of the family. Most recently she was seen in the comedy “How We Played the Line” in 2014.

n 2015, it became known that Safrankova had lung cancer. At that time she was doing so badly that her sister had to represent her at the award ceremony for the Czech Order of Merit. In 2016, the actress had to undergo an operation that removed a fifth of her lungs. But after the operation she seemed to be recovering: In an interview with the newspaper “Blesk”, the actress reported that she was fine.

“I feel really great. But I take it all with great humility, ”she said. “The universe is very unpredictable and playful … it can always surprise you!” She thanked everyone who stood by her during the difficult times and kept their fingers crossed for her. “It really wasn’t easy.”

On Wednesday morning, Safrankova died after another operation

In the conversation she was even looking forward to working in front of the camera again, but gradually withdrew from the public eye in recent years. It is said that she had to undergo another operation on the evening of June 8th. She died in the clinic in Prague on Wednesday morning.

It was only recently announced that there would be a remake of the classic (KURIER reported). Singer Astrid S, who became known in 2013 for her participation in the Norwegian version of the talent show Pop Idol, plays the Cinderella there. The film was shot in Lillehammer, with more than 200 historical buildings the Maihaugen open-air museum providing the perfect backdrop. It is not yet clear when the new film will come to Germany.
