German cyclist, Dutch rower out of Olympics after positive COVID-19 test

German cyclist Simon Geschke has withdrawn from Saturday's Tokyo Olympics road race after testing positive for COVID-19, his team said Friday.

Geschke was staying with the entire road race team at a hotel with teammates outside the Olympic village.

All 12 other German cyclists and team officials, who are also staying there during the Games, had previously tested negative and will undergo further tests.

"That is really bitter, to be taken out of the competition shortly before the race," the 35-year-old said. "I followed all the health rules as best as I could. Physically I feel good but emotionally this is a dark day for me."

Now all I have left is to wish the boys tomorrow a very strong race," he said.

His roommate, Emanuel Buchmann, who had previously tested negative, will undergo a further PCR test before being cleared to race.

Teammates Niklas  Arndt and  Maximilian Schachmann  are eligible to start, the team said.

This would have been Geschke's second Olympic Games after Rio de Janeiro, where he finished 13th in the time trial but did not finish the road race.

The Spanish team also suffered a COVID-19 scare on the eve of the 234 km race when a masseur tested positive for COVID-19, prompting a panicky bout of testing for the riders.

Jose Luis Lopez Cerron, president of the Spanish Cycling Federation, said the five-man team would start the race having given negative results."

They have confirmed to us that they can ride. We have received great news after the initial scare, we hope that our masseur is well," he told Spanish daily Marca.

Former world champion Alejandro Valverde will lead Spain's challenge for a medal on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Dutch rower Finn Florijn has been ruled out of the Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19 in Tokyo, the Royal Dutch Rowing Federation (KNRB) said in a Twitter post Friday.

Florijn had finished in fourth in the sixth heat of the men's single sculls race earlier on Friday, which was not enough to progress to the quarterfinals as only the top two qualify directly.

However, the 21-year-old was scheduled to take part in the repechage race on Saturday, which gives competitors another chance to qualify. But he has gone into quarantine and will no longer participate in the Games, the KNRB said.

His case comes after a staff member of the Dutch rowing team, as well as two other Dutch athletes — taekwondo competitor Reshmie Oogink and skateboarder Candy Jacobs — also tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week.

Thầy trò người Algeria nêu lý do với giới truyền thông là đoàn kết với dân tộc Palestine, không giao thủ với Do Thái.

Võ sĩ Fethi Nourine không phải lần đầu bỏ đấu khi gặp Do Thái. Trong giải vô địch nhu đạo thế giới 2019, anh này đã từng bỏ trận đấu cùng một lý do.

Đã gặp người bất đồng chính kiến thì càng dùng cách "tấn công vật lý", à không "vũ lực", để giải quyết ấm ức trên võ đài trên tinh thần thượng võ. Chứ mắc gì ... né. Chưa chắc anh võ sĩ Do Thái đã thái quá như anh Algeria.

Algerian judoka Nourine withdraws from Olympics to avoid facing Israeli

Algerian athlete Fethi Nourine and his coach have withdrawn from the judo competition at the Tokyo Olympics to avoid facing an Israeli athlete. The decision was made in support of the "Palestinian cause."


The International Judo Federation have said comments made by Fethi Nourine are in "total opposition" to their philosophy

The International Judo Federation confirmed on Saturday that Algerian athlete Fethi Nourine and his coach have withdrawn from the judo competition at the Tokyo Olympics to avoid facing an Israeli athlete.

In a statement, the IJF said Nourine and coach, Amar Benikhlef, "gave individual statements to media announcing their withdrawal from the competition to avoid meeting an Israeli athlete during the event."

"We worked a lot to reach the Olympics, but the Palestinian cause is bigger than all this," the 30-year-old Nourine told Algerian television. His statements were backed by Benikhlef, who admitted they had “not been lucky with the draw. We got an Israeli opponent and that's why we had to retire. We made the right decision."

The federation said both were temporarily suspended after an investigative commission "confirmed all the facts." It added that the case was assigned to its disciplinary commission for "further investigation, judgement and final sanctioning beyond the Olympic Games."

The Algerian Olympic Committee withdrew accreditation for both Nourine and Benikhlef and "plans to send them home, applying sanctions accordingly," the IJF statement said.

Not the first time

Nourine, who was due to take part in the -73kg event, has previously pulled out of other judo competitions to avoid Israeli opposition, most recently at the World Championships in Tokyo two years ago.

The phenomenon of Israeli athletes facing boycotts due to their nationality is not new. At the Tokyo Olympics, international judo was hoping to outline the progress made, but have now been hit by another public setback.

The comments by the two Algerians "are in total opposition to the philosophy of the International Judo Federation. The IJF has a strict non-discrimination policy, promoting solidarity as a key principle, reinforced by the values of judo," the federation said.

Athletes from other countries such as Egypt andIran have also previously refused to compete against Israelis, with the story of Saeid Mollaei the most high-profile. Mollaei has since defected to Mongolia and could face the Israeli in question, Sagi Muki, in the semi-finals of the men's -81kg at Tokyo 2020.
