Coronavirus outbreak hits refugee home in Germany

At least 70 people at a refugee home near Bonn have tested positive for COVID-19. News of the outbreak prompted calls for better protection for asylum-seekers and more testing at the often crowded facilities.

Scores of people have tested positive for COVID-19 at a refugee home in western Germany, local authorities say.

Some 70 people have tested positive and authorities have tested around 300 other residents at the compound, which is located in the town of Sankt Augustin outside the city of Bonn.

The local Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper on Sunday reported that the number of positive cases at the facility was over 100.

The rest of the nearly 500 asylum-seekers living at the facility are also due to be tested.

Most of the people who have tested positive for the virus either had mild or no symptoms, the district government said.

The residents who tested positive have been isolated, authorities said, adding that 60 people whose tests came back negative have been transferred to another home.

    Testing 'happening far too late'

News of the outbreak prompted swift criticism, with politicians urging for better protections for asylum-seekers.

"We have repeatedly called for blanket testing in these homes," Green Party politician Horst Becker told the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger. "Now we can see that this is happening far too late."

Outbreaks have also been reported at other refugee homes in Bonn, Berlin and other areas of Germany.

Last week, a court ruled protections against the coronavirus were "inadequate" at a refugee home in the same state as the Sankt Augustin outbreak. A pregnant woman and her husband had appealed to the court to be removed from the facility.

Asylum-seekers in Germany are required to live in "reception centers," or shared accommodations, during their asylum applications. Many live with several hundred other inhabitants, with some sharing rooms with strangers.

The conditions and lack of privacy in Germany's facilities for asylum-seekers have long been criticized by refugee and immigrant rights groups, with the coronavirus pandemic raising fears among asylum-seekers and activists alike.

Coronavirus cluster traced to German church

Places of worship in Germany opened their doors again at the start of May. But now a new COVID-19 cluster has been linked to one religious service.

A cluster of 40 coronavirus infections in the city of Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding area have been linked back to a Baptist church service that took place on May 10, reported German news outlet der Tagesspiegel on Saturday.

"The vast majority of them are not especially ill," said the newspaper, citing Rene Gottschalk, the Frankfurt health authority's chief. "According to our current information, only one person has been hospitalized," added Gottschalk.

The state of Hesse, where the church is based, banned religious ceremonies and gatherings from mid-March as part of restrictions implemented nationwide to slow the spread of the coronavirus. But Hesse permitted religious ceremonies to resume from May 1 as long as social distancing and other hygiene measures are implemented, meaning the church broke no rules in holding the service.

    Infections traced from Hanau

At least 16 infection cases in the town of Hanau, 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) east of Frankfurt, have been traced back to the May 10 church service, said Hanau authorities.

"It's a very dynamic event," Antoni Walczok, head of Hanau's health authority, said in comments to German daily newspaper, Frankfurter Rundschau.

As a result of the new infections, the town has called off a fasting and prayer gathering for more than 1,000 participants from several Muslim institutions in the Rhine-Main region. The risk for further infections was "too high," explained Hanau mayor Claus Kaminsky.

For many Muslims, the coronavirus lockdown has been particularly hard, as preventative measures have stopped them gathering for prayer and breaking fast together during the holy month of Ramadan.

Trump calls for places of worship to reopen

The virus cluster comes as US President Donald Trump said churches were "essential" and urged them to be allowed to reopen, despite the country having the world's highest virus infection rate and death toll at over 1.6 million infections with over 96,000 deaths.

"Governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now for this weekend," said Trump during a press conference at the White House, threatening to "override" governors who do not listen to him.

Some areas of the US are still under coronavirus lockdown and it is unclear what authority Trump has to overrule governors' decisions.

    Sweden's Single Diner Restaurant
    https://www.bbc.com/travel/story/202...ner-restaurant

Located in Ransäter, a tiny rural town tucked in the Swedish countryside in Värmland, around 350km west of Stockholm, it consists of a sole wooden table and single chair set in her garden overlooking a verdant pasture. A candle and bouquet of wildflowers finish off the demure table setting.

When Karlsson’s elderly parents wanted to visit her during the current Covid-19 situation, she and her partner, Rasmus Persson, needed to devise a way of sharing a meal with them without compromising their health. Since they couldn’t sit at the same table for safety reasons, they decided to set up a table outside in the garden to “remotely dine” with Karlsson’s parents while they conversed through the window.

Karlsson and Persson plan to keep Bord För En open until 1 August and reopen annually every spring and summer. And with lots of international interest from fellow chefs and foodie colleagues, Persson and Karlsson are now considering expanding their idea globally. They are currently inviting chefs who are interested in launching similar concepts to apply.

Germany finds creative social distancing tricks

With social distancing rules to stay in place till late June in Germany, cultural institutions are finding ingenuous ways to safely bring people together. From noodle hats to parking lot prayers, here's a selection.

While the German government has announced on Tuesday that social distancing measures will apply until June 29, a broad spectrum of cultural institutions in the country are already finding unique ways to maintain a 1.5-meter distance between people from different households.
