Now they are wondering what to do with their escargatoire.
Archaeologists in southern Europe (https://www.theguardian.com/world/europe-news) have uncovered large quantities of snail shells among stone tools and animal remains in pits used for cooking during the early Gravettian era, suggesting that Palaeolithic humans in Spain began eating snails around 30,000 ago.
The Romans considered escargots a food for the elite. In French cuisine, they are taken from their shells, killed, cooked with garlic butter, wine or stock and put back in the shells with the sauce. They are usually served in special dishes with individual depressions for 12 snails.
One snail farmer, Hubert Hédoin, however, told Vendée television all was not lost and that the leftover snails, currently hibernating, would be pickled or canned.

Người Mỹ có mê “minh chủ” đến đâu cũng còn “dân chủ” để quay đầu. Người Việt thì không.
Tối ngày 6/1/2021, tòa nhà Quốc hội tại thủ đô Washington, D.C. của nước Mỹ thất thủ. Cảnh tượng này xuất hiện dễ cũng phải cả ngàn lần xưa nay. Nhưng đó là trên các bộ phim hành động giải trí của Hollywood. Rất nhiều người Mỹ không ngờ rằng có ngày mình sẽ thấy nó diễn ra ngoài đời thực, ở chính đất nước được mệnh danh là thành trì dân chủ của thế giới.
Phải mất đến vài tiếng đồng hồ sau, khi lực lượng cảnh sát được tăng cường, lệnh giới nghiêm được đưa ra, tình hình mới tạm yên ắng trở lại.
Hàng trăm người xông vào tòa nhà Capitol, hàng ngàn người vây kín bên ngoài, đòi những nghị sĩ bên trong phải ngừng việc xác nhận phiếu đại cử tri, lật ngược kết quả bầu cử tổng thống.
Họ tin rằng cuộc bầu cử bị đánh cắp. Họ tin rằng mình đang bảo vệ công lý. Họ tin rằng mình là những người yêu nước. Họ tin theo lời của Donald Trump.
Nói không cần sách, mách không cần chứng
Suốt hai tháng qua, kể từ khi kết thúc cuộc bầu cử tổng thống, Trump, người thua cuộc, liên tục cáo buộc bầu cử có gian lận và kêu gọi người ủng hộ mình phản đối kết quả. Trump – người tự mô tả bản thân (https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-im-like-really-smart-a-very-stable-genius) “không chỉ rất thông minh, mà còn là một thiên tài” – không hề đưa ra được bằng chứng nào về các cáo buộc.
Theo thống kê (https://www.usatoday.com/in-depth/news/politics/elections/2021/01/06/trumps-failed-efforts-overturn-election-numbers/4130307001/), từ sau vụ bầu cử cho đến nay, Trump và những người ủng hộ đã tiến hành 62 vụ kiện nhằm đảo ngược kết quả. Các thẩm phán, từ cấp bang đến cấp liên bang, từ người của phe Dân chủ đến cả người do chính quyền Trump bổ nhiệm, bác bỏ hết 61 vụ. Nhiều vụ kiện (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/judges-trump-election-lawsuits/2020/12/12/e3a57224-3a72-11eb-98c4-25dc9f4987e8_story.html) thậm chí còn nhận được cái lắc đầu ngán ngẩm từ thẩm phán, với lý lẽ trong đơn kiện chắp vá hời hợt như “một con quái vật Frankenstein”, hoặc thiếu bằng chứng thực tế tới mức “không đủ để bác bỏ dù chỉ một phiếu bầu chứ đừng nói tới hàng triệu phiếu như yêu cầu”.
(Đơn kiện duy nhất được chấp thuận và xử theo yêu cầu của đội ngũ Trump là khi một thẩm phán tại bang Pennsylvania đồng ý không cho phép kéo dài thời hạn để cử tri cung cấp giấy tờ xác minh thân phận, trong trường hợp họ chỉnh sửa phiếu bầu. Luật trước đó là sáu ngày. Các quan chức bang nới rộng thời hạn thêm ba ngày. Yêu cầu gia hạn này bị bác bỏ, nhưng nó không ảnh hưởng gì đến kết quả bỏ phiếu tại bang.)
Nhiều người chỉ ra rằng, chính việc Trump liên tục từ chối nhận thua và kích động sự phản kháng từ những người ủng hộ là nguồn gốc cho cơn bạo loạn ở tòa nhà Quốc hội.

Mọi chuyện bắt đầu xa hơn thế.
Nhiều tháng trước cuộc bầu cử tổng thống, Trump đã liên tục lặp đi lặp lại rằng nếu ông thua, đó là vì “bầu cử có gian lận”. Trump không đưa ra được bất kỳ bằng chứng nào để tố cáo gian lận.
Nó không phải chỉ xuất hiện ở cuộc bầu cử năm nay.
Năm 2016, Trump cảnh báo (https://www.forbes.com/sites/andrewsolender/2020/11/29/all-the-elections-trump-has-claimed-were-stolen-through-voter-fraud/?sh=123d6a531d30) đảng Dân chủ của Hillary Clinton sẽ “gian lận” trước khi cuộc bầu cử bắt đầu. Hay trước đó, trong cùng năm, ông cũng lớn tiếng tố cáo đối thủ Ted Cruz của đảng Cộng hòa “ăn cắp phiếu bầu”. Ở những cuộc bầu cử tại bang các năm tiếp theo, Trump cũng thường xuyên cáo buộc gian lận – khi phe của ông thua cuộc.
Trong tất cả các trường hợp, Trump không bao giờ đưa ra được bất kỳ bằng chứng nào cho những lời tố cáo của mình.
Hay nói chính xác hơn, ông không cần chứng minh gì cả. Những người ủng hộ ông không cần bằng chứng. Những người khác thì phủi tay lắc đầu mặc kệ.
Thống kê (https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/politics/trump-claims-database/)của tờ Washington Post cho thấy trong 1.386 ngày tại vị, Trump có 29.508 lần nói sai sự thật. Trung bình một ngày hơn 20 lần. Thống kê này không còn được cập nhật kể từ ngày 5/11/2020. Con số chắc chắn chỉ tăng chứ không giảm.
Nhưng Trump nói dối không phải chỉ từ lúc tham chính.
Trump, và người cha của mình, nói dối từ những ngày đầu tiên (https://www.luatkhoa.org/2019/03/huyen-thoai-ve-ti-phu-tu-than-donald-trump/) khi Donald Trump được lựa chọn để kế nghiệp gia sản kếch xù.
Để tạo dựng nên hình ảnh một thiên tài kinh doanh trẻ tuổi, Trump con đã lừa thiên hạ khi nhận vơ tất cả những công trình của cha là của mình. Trump cha gật đầu hùa theo, bất kể việc phải âm thầm hết lần này đến lần khác bỏ tiền ra cứu nguy các dự án phá sản của đứa con.
“Công tử Bạc Liêu” Donald Trump từ khi chào đời đã có thể nói cóc cần sách, mách cóc cần chứng, nhờ vào những người như cha của mình, và nhờ những ai mờ mắt với hào quang của đồng tiền.
Từ “dân chủ” lạc sang “minh chủ”
Trump không phải một nhân vật đặc biệt. Người như Trump có ở mọi nơi, và luôn tồn tại trong lịch sử nhân loại. Nhưng chính những người xung quanh đã làm cho Trump trở thành hiện tượng có một không hai.
Cha ông phủ tấm lưới vàng bao bọc cậu con cưng. Người hâm mộ dệt nên hào quang về một thương nhân vĩ đại. Và những cử tri tìm thấy cho mình một cứu tinh sẵn sàng hứa hẹn với họ bất kỳ điều gì.
Trong số những người bất mãn đó, có không ít người là “single-issue voters” – những cử tri bỏ phiếu lựa chọn chỉ dựa trên một vấn đề.
Họ có thể bầu chọn cho một ứng viên chỉ theo giới tính, sắc tộc, đức tin, hoặc một chính sách cụ thể nào đó (chống/ ủng hộ quyền phá thai, chống/ ủng hộ nhập cư, tăng/ giảm thuế, hay bảo vệ/ bỏ qua vấn đề môi trường…).
Nhiều người Việt Nam ủng hộ Donald Trump cũng chỉ dựa trên một luận điểm duy nhất như vậy. Đó là vì ông “chống Trung Quốc”. Những chuyện khác Trump làm, cho dù ảnh hưởng tiêu cực như thế nào đến ai, đều không quan trọng.

Bản thân việc quan tâm đến một vấn đề tất nhiên không phải là vấn đề. Ngay cả việc xem một vấn đề nào đó là quan trọng nhất trên đời cũng không nhất thiết là chuyện xấu.
Nhưng nó là con đường ngắn nhất dẫn đến xung đột với những người khác. Đó là thực tế hiển nhiên, khi không phải ai trên đời cũng chỉ xem trọng cùng một vấn đề như mình.
Tuy vậy, thứ xung đột nghiêm trọng hơn đối với những “cử tri một vấn đề” lại không nằm ở mối quan hệ với người khác. Nó là xung đột với hiện thực.
Nhiều người Việt Nam ủng hộ Trump cuồng nhiệt đến mức không chấp nhận bất kỳ một thông tin nào bất lợi về ông. Từ đó, họ không những nghe theo những lời nói dối không bằng không chứng từ Trump, mà còn chủ động tạo ra những lời nói dối khác để trước hết, tự thuyết phục bản thân, và sau đó, tìm kiếm đồng minh từ những người cùng chí hướng.
Vô số các tin giả được chia sẻ nhan nhản, vô số các thuyết âm mưu được dựng nên, bất kể vô số bằng chứng hoàn toàn trái ngược.
Họ như những con thiêu thân lao vào hết ảo ảnh này đến ảo ảnh khác: tòa án sẽ xử thắng kiện, Tòa án Tối cao sẽ quyết định, quân đội sẽ vào cuộc, phó tổng thống sẽ ra tay, các luật sư thiên tài sẽ biết cách, và trên hết, một người vĩ đại như Donald Trump luôn “tính hết rồi”.
Ngay cả khi hình ảnh những kẻ cực đoan cuồng tín ở Mỹ xông vào đập phá tòa nhà Quốc hội được truyền đi rộng rãi, những fan Việt trung thành vẫn có thể tiếp tục ôm lấy tin giả “Antifa (nhóm hoạt động cánh tả) mới là những kẻ đập phá” chứ không phải những người “phe ta”.
Thứ tư duy “phe ta luôn tốt, nếu xấu thì chắc chắn là phe địch” không phải là sản phẩm của chế độ dân chủ. Nó là tàn dư của chế độ quân chủ.
Ngày nay, khi “dân chủ” trở thành tiêu chuẩn cho cả thế giới – ngay cả những nước độc tài còn cố gắng khoác lên mình cái mác dân chủ – nhiều người vẫn dễ dàng rớt vào cái bẫy của các “minh chủ”.
Trump, một người luôn ôm mọi công lao bất kể của ai về mình và không bao giờ nhận bất kỳ trách nhiệm nào, là một cái bẫy lý tưởng.
Những người Việt Nam từ khi sinh ra cũng đã ở trong một cái bẫy giống vậy, với cùng thứ “chân lý” được ra rả qua nhiều thế hệ: mất mùa là do thiên tai, được mùa là nhờ thiên tài đảng ta.
Chẳng có gì ngạc nhiên khi cái bẫy “minh chủ” ăn khớp với quá nhiều người Việt.
Tỉnh thức
Trump, cùng những lời nói dối của mình, như một quả cầu tuyết lăn xuống dốc. Càng lăn càng phình to, cuốn phăng mọi thứ trên đường, tưởng như không gì cản nổi.
Nhưng mọi thứ đều phải có điểm dừng.
Với nhiều người Mỹ, vụ bạo loạn xông vào tòa nhà Quốc hội vừa qua là điểm tới hạn của quả cầu Trump.

Câu nói được lặp lại nhiều nhất trong cơn bạo loạn vừa qua có lẽ là “enough is enough” – quá đủ rồi.
Các lãnh đạo đảng Cộng hòa, những người trong bốn năm qua mắt nhắm mắt mở trước những lời nói dối của Trump rốt cuộc cũng công khai phản đối các hành động của ông.
Quốc hội cuối cùng cũng xác nhận Joe Biden là tổng thống mới. Trump, trước áp lực có thể bị buộc phải từ chức sớm trước hai tuần, cũng phải xuống nước (https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/trump-commits-orderly-transition-statement-after-mob-stormed-capitol-n1253223) “xác nhận chuyển giao quyền lực trong trật tự”.
Những fan trung thành nhất của Trump ở Mỹ, cho dù không chịu thức tỉnh, cũng không gặp phải hậu quả gì lớn. Họ dù sao cũng được sống trong một thể chế dân chủ. Dù bản thân họ có thể cả đời sẽ không nhận ra, nhưng quyền lợi của họ được những người tự do dân chủ khác đảm bảo.
Chỉ cần muốn tìm sự thật, họ luôn có thể được tiếp cận với nó, khi báo chí và sách vở không hề bị kiểm duyệt. Có đi lạc sang minh chủ, họ vẫn luôn có dân chủ – nhờ những người khác quyết tâm bảo vệ – để quay về.
Nhưng những người Việt Nam đặt trọn niềm tin nơi Trump thì khác. Ngoài Trump ra, họ lại phải tiếp tục bấu víu vào đâu?
Nếu không dám nhận cái sai, cái dốt và đặc biệt là cái sợ của mình, họ sẽ chỉ chạy từ minh chủ này sang minh chủ khác, càng lúc càng xa rời những giá trị thực sự của dân chủ.
Sai và dốt không bao giờ là vấn đề, vì ai cũng sai và ai cũng dốt.
Nhưng sợ – sợ sai, sợ dốt, sợ người khác chỉ ra cái sai cái dốt của bản thân, sợ gánh vác trách nhiệm thay đổi, cứ phải tìm kiếm một minh chủ để gửi gắm – đó mới là bãi lầy nuốt chửng mỗi người.
Nỗi sợ đó khiến cho những người có ăn có học có trình độ nhất trở thành những fan hâm mộ cuồng loạn nhất của các minh chủ. Họ là các luật sư, các doanh nhân, những trí thức, hay thậm chí là các nhà khoa học. Giống như những kẻ cuồng tín xông vào đập phá tòa nhà Quốc hội Mỹ, họ cũng tin rằng mình đang bảo vệ công lý, tin rằng mình là những người yêu nước chân chính.
Sự thật: họ chỉ là những người không dám nhảy ra khỏi bãi lầy của bản thân.
Và không giống như cái “đầm lầy” tưởng tượng mà Trump đã vẽ ra để hứa hẹn sẽ “quét sạch”, bãi lầy này là thứ có thật.
Họ chỉ cần nhìn vào gương, và không tiếp tục nhắm mắt.

Còn một tháng nữa là tới tết Tân Sửu, nhưng hiện tại "30 đã là tết" rồi :)
Táo Ốc mài mực viết trường sớ gởi lên thiên đình tâu rõ mọi chuyện cho kíp.
Có sẳn sớ của Táo Washington rồi nè, nhưng cần mấy ngày để dịch qua tiếng Việt (nhiều chữ hơi khó).
Sự tình là hôm qua ông Táo trong bếp hỏi mượn cái iPad để gửi sớ lên Thượng đế bằng email. Từ khi trần gian có dịch cúm thì Thượng đế ra chiếu chỉ cho tất cả các Táo trên thế giới năm nay gởi sớ qua email, khỏi cần cưỡi cá chép lên trời làm chi mất công phải dry clean cái áo dài với khăn đóng.

Ngoài sừng trang và râu trang còn có cờ trang. Buồn buồn khi thấy khi cờ vàng ba sọc đỏ được xếp chung hàng ngũ với cờ của các thành phần bạo loạn. Nào cờ dấy loạn của liên bang (confederate) , cờ nhái đầy tham vọng của Đức Quốc xã, cờ “thin X line”. Nhớ trong đám động hôm Biden và Harris đọc diễn văn chiến thắng mình thấy duy nhất chỉ cờ Hoa Kỳ. Có thể có một vài bảng hiệu cắm cỏ ủng hộ Biden được thiết kế lại cắm trên một số xe nhưng họ không biến những bảng hiệu thành những lá cờ như những người ủng hộ Trump đã làm. Còn quấn luôn cờ quanh mình. Áo dài thì luôn luôn đẹp nhưng "45 love 45" trên áo dài vẽ, thêu cờ Việt Nam có nghĩa là gì, có ai hiểu?

Details were quickly ironed out and the bride confirmed that she was, indeed, the woman's long-lost biological daughter.
It turns out she went missing as a child and was picked up by her adoptive parents on the roadside some 20 years ago.
The wedding could have been called off at this point, but the woman also revealed that her son — her now-daughter's groom — was also adopted.
The wedding proceeded as planned, but the shocking twist is one detour their guests will never forget. In photos that went viral on Chinese social media, the bride can be seen breaking down and hugging her long-lost mother tightly.
It's unknown how exactly the daughter went missing, but some are raising the possibility of human traffickers being the culprit. It's also unclear whether the woman's adopted son — now her son-in-law — will be searching for his own parents.

Anh Tam Nguyen, đồng sở hữu trường dạy nghề thẩm mỹ Advance Beauty College ở Garden Grove tổ chức dạy võ tự vệ cho học viên của mình.
Ý tưởng này của anh xuất phát từ ngày 16-3, sau khi một kẻ tấn công xả súng tại ba spa ở khu vực Atlanta, giết chết 8 người, gồm 6 phụ nữ gốc Á. Vụ xả súng xảy ra khi tội ác căm ghét nhằm vào người Mỹ gốc Á gia tăng vì những lời lẽ phân biệt chủng tộc cáo buộc họ liên quan nguồn gốc đại dịch COVID-19. Theo Reuters.
Sau vụ xả súng, anh Tam Nguyen mời Thị trưởng Garden Grove Steve Jones đến trường Advance Beauty College. Jones thông báo đã yêu cầu cảnh sát tăng cường tuần tra ở những khu vực người Mỹ gốc Á cao tuổi thường xuyên lui tới. Các quan chức và cảnh sát khác cũng tới dạy học viên và các thành viên cộng đồng cách tự vệ và những việc cần làm trong trường hợp bị tấn công.
Tại Advance Beauty College, cứ hai tuần một lần, các hướng dẫn viên võ thuật lại đến dạy cho khoảng 50 học viên và một số người khác. Khi học võ, đầu mannequin được sử dụng cho các buổi học tạo mẫu tóc được đặt sang một bên, trong khi học viên và hướng dẫn viên võ thuật tập trung trên mặt sàn bao quanh là các tấm kiếng thường thấy ở salon. Tam Ha, 58 tuổi, đai đen Aikido, hướng dẫn cách đối phó kẻ tấn công to lớn, khỏe hơn, đủ lâu để thoát thân. Ông dạy những động tác có thể khiến kẻ tấn công ngã xuống đất và cách tung cú đấm vào những điểm dễ bị tổn thương.
Tam Nguyen sinh ra tại Việt Nam, được đưa sang Mỹ năm một tuổi và lớn lên tại Garden Grove, nơi có cộng đồng người gốc Việt lớn nhất thế giới. Garden Grove, phía nam thành phố Los Angeles, có dân số 170,000 người, trong đó hơn 40% là người gốc Á, theo dữ liệu điều tra dân số Mỹ.
Trường Advance Beauty College, do cha mẹ anh thành lập, cho biết họ đã đào tạo 50,000 học viên trong hơn 35 năm. Trường có hai cơ sở với tổng số 500 học viên, gồm nhiều phụ nữ gốc Việt, và 50 đào tạo viên, dù bị hạn chế vì các quy định giãn cách xã hội.
Tam Nguyen cho biết cha mẹ dạy anh sống trầm lặng, nhưng thời gian đòi hỏi anh phải hành động chống lại những nỗi sợ hãi, căm ghét, sự thiếu hiểu biết và bạo lực.
Hôm 9-4, hai ngày trước cuộc biểu tình chủ nghĩa dân tộc của người da trắng ở Huntington Beach, nhóm của anh thuê máy bay quảng cáo với băng rôn in dòng chữ “Không thù ghét” (NO HATE) ở độ cao 11,000 ft (3,300 mét.)
Hồi đầu năm 2020, khi đại dịch bùng phát, thúc đẩy anh Tam Nguyen thành lập nhóm tình nguyện Nailing It for America. Hồi cuối Tháng Ba, tại buổi kêu gọi ngưng thù ghét người Á Châu, tổ chức tại thành phố Garden Grove, Cảnh Sát Trưởng Tom DaRe của Garden Grove nói: “Chúng tôi xin quý vị báo cảnh sát nếu mình là nạn nhân của tội thù ghét hay chứng kiến được một tội xảy ra, đừng đăng lên mạng xã hội. Quý vị phải báo thì chúng tôi mới biết chuyện gì xảy ra trong cộng đồng để điều tra.”
“Chúng tôi không chấp nhận chuyện bạo lực xảy ra với bất cứ ai, và sẽ làm mọi cách để giữ an toàn cho quý vị. Tuy nhiên, chúng ta phải hợp tác với nhau như một gia đình để làm được chuyện đó. Chúng tôi sẽ không để bị kịch ở Georgia xảy ra ở Garden Grove,” cảnh sát trưởng nói thêm. Rod Humphris, who co-runs The Raven pub, said he was unhappy with Labour's response to government lockdown measures. He said the economy had been sacrificed "because old people are dying".
Sir Keir, who was on a walkabout in the city, said he "profoundly" disagreed.
When Sir Keir stepped inside The Raven for a visit that had been pre-arranged with one of the owners, Mr Humphris told him to "get out of my pub".
The co-owner, Tim Perry, has since apologised to Labour. The pub has tweeted that there was "no intention to hijack Keir Starmer's visit to Bath" and that Mr Humphris' views "are his own".

If the farmer fails to comply, the issue could be referred to the Belgian foreign ministry, which might have to summon a Franco-Belgian border commission, dormant since 1930, to settle the exact delimitation of the border.

“As part of his guilty plea, Hines admitted that he fraudulently sought millions of dollars in PPP loans through applications to an insured financial institution on behalf of different companies,” the Justice Department said after his guilty plea in February. “Plea documents indicate that in the days and weeks following the disbursement of PPP funds, Hines did not make payroll payments that he claimed on his loan applications. He did, however, use the PPP proceeds for personal expenses.”

Sister Mary Margaret Kreuper, 79, a former principal at St James Catholic School in Torrance, California, used tuition fees and donations to subsidize casino gambling expenses and credit card payments, the authorities said.
Kreuper, who took vows of poverty at age 18 and spent 59 years in the religious order, said in her plea agreement that she had begun diverting money from the school’s tuition and donation account to a savings account that funded the living expenses of the nuns who worked at the school – and then used some of the money herself.
The scheme was uncovered during an audit after Kreuper retired in 2018. Prosecutors said that she had also instructed school employees to “alter and destroy financial records”.
Kreuper is due in court on 1 July and faces up to 40 years in federal prison.

Ukraine is preparing to stage a military parade next month to mark 30 years of independence following the Soviet Union’s breakup, and the defence ministry on Friday released photographs of fatigue-clad women soldiers marching in mid-heel black pumps.
More than 31,000 women now serve in the Ukrainian armed forces, including more than 4,000 of whom are officers.
The choice of footwear sparked a torrent of criticism on social media and in parliament, and led to accusations that women soldiers had been sexualised.
“The story of a parade in heels is a real disgrace,” commentator Vitaly Portnikov said on Facebook, arguing that some Ukrainian officials had a “medieval” mindset.
Another commentator, Maria Shapranova, accused the defence ministry of “sexism and misogyny.”

As the Champagne committee’s website clearly states: “Champagne only comes from Champagne.”
But in a provocative move on Friday, Vladimir Putin signed legislation requiring all non-Russian producers to mark their products in Russia as “sparkling wine” on the back of every bottle, including some of the world’s most famous and expensive bubbly.
Under the law, only locally made Shampanskoye is worthy of the prestigious and previously exclusive name, and French appellations are not recognised.
On Saturday the celebrated champagne producer Moët Hennessy, part of the LVMH luxury group that includes Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Mercier, Krug and Dom Pérignon, threatened to suspend exports to Russia.
But by Monday the threat had gone flat when the company announced it would resume deliveries. “The Moët Hennessy champagne houses have always respected the law in place wherever they operate and will restart deliveries as soon as it is able to make the [label] changes,” the group said.
France has 16,200 champagne wine growers and 360 champagne houses, producing around 231m bottles a year. Champagne is made from only three grapes: pinot noir, meunier and chardonnay. The market is worth €4.2bn, of which €2.6bn is exports, with the UK and US the biggest customers.
Russia imports almost 50m litres of sparkling wine every year. French champagne represents 13% of this market and Moët Hennessy only 2% of this.
Russian Shampanskoye is the post-USSR reincarnation of what was called Soviet champagne, a popular cheap sparkling drink created in the Stalin era in the 1930s to make a version of the elite wine that was available to all.
Le Monde suggested Putin’s move was a nod to his close friend and associate Yuri Kovalchuk, the billionaire who owns the Novy Svet and Massandra wineries in Crimea, annexed by Moscow from Ukraine in 2014.
“For correctness, we just need to rename Kuban [a Russian wine-producing region] as champagne and it will all be rather logical,” joked Vasily Oblomov, a Russian musician. He also suggested a law requiring that “Mercedes” be defined as cars only made in Russia.

Instead of embracing the digital age, however, hundreds of government offices mounted a defence of the much-maligned machine, insisting that banishing them would be “impossible”, according to the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper.
The backlash has forced the government to abandon its mission to turn officialdom into a digital-only operation, the newspaper said on Wednesday.
Members of the resistance said there were concerns over the security of sensitive information and “anxiety over the communication environment” if, as the government had requested, they switched exclusively to email.
Japanese ministries and agencies use faxes when handling highly confidential information, including court procedures and police work, and the Hokkaido Shimbun said there were fears that exclusively online communication would result in security lapses.

Genoa, once a powerful maritime city, adopted the St George’s Cross as its flag and St George as its patron saint during the Crusades. The symbol was adopted by England toward the end of the religious wars, in the 13th century, with English ships flying the flag of Genoa as a deterrent to enemies.
For the privilege, the English monarch paid an annual tribute to the doge of Genoa, or ruler of the Republic of Genoa. However, the tribute apparently fell by the wayside after the republic collapsed.
Marco Bucci, the mayor of Genoa, said he would write to the Queen seeking to recoup funds that could then be spent on the city’s needs.
“Your Majesty, I regret to inform you that from my books [it] looks like you didn’t pay for the last 247 years,” he joked.
The St George’s Cross is also used as a symbol in other northern Italian cities, including Bologna, Padua, Reggio Emilia, Mantua, Vercelli, Alessandria and Milan.
It is unknown whether St George – who is thought to have been born in the late third century in Cappadocia, now eastern Turkey – ever visited England. He became the country’s patron saint after the English Reformation and is the patron saint of many other places including Portugal, Malta, Georgia and Ethiopia.

An Indonesian man with the coronavirus has boarded a domestic flight disguised as his wife, wearing a niqab covering his face and carrying fake IDs and a negative PCR test result.
Police say a flight attendant aboard a Citilink plane traveling from Jakarta to Ternate in North Maluku province on Sunday noticed the man change the clothes in the lavatory.
“He bought the plane ticket with his wife’s name and brought the identity card, the PCR test result and the vaccination card with his wife’s name. All documents are under his wife’s name,” Ternate police chief Aditya Laksimada said after arresting the man upon landing. He was only identified by his initials.
Police took him for a COVID-19 test, which came back positive.
The man is currently self-isolating at home and police said the investigation will continue.

The man, identified by a local news channel as Reza Baluchi, washed ashore in Flagler county on the east coast of Florida on Saturday.
He was inside a large barrel-type device which appeared to have flotation buoys attached to each end. The Flagler county sheriff’s office posted photos of the strange vessel on Facebook.
Fox 35 Orlando reported that Baluchi’s aim was to “run” to the northern US or Bermuda. Baluchi instead ended up 30 miles south of his St Augustine start point.
“My goal is to not only raise money for homeless people, raise money for the coast guard, raise money for the police department, raise money for the fire department,” he told the TV channel. “They are in public service, they do it for safety and they help other people.”

The man made his getaway on an electric scooter after reportedly threatening staff at the Chaumet jewellers near the Champs-Élysées.
CCTV shows the grey-haired alleged thief, wearing a light-grey suit, white shirt and tie, arriving at the store about 5.10pm on Tuesday. Shortly afterwards he was filmed leaving the shop with a white bag of jewels and gemstones and departing on a green scooter that he had left parked outside.
Staff told police the lone man had at first pretended to be a customer asking to see various pieces of expensive jewellery before drawing a knife. No one was injured in the robbery.
After the heist, potential witnesses at a nearby cafe told Le Parisien they saw and heard nothing. Many were reportedly distracted by the presence of one-time screen hard man and martial arts specialist Jean-Claude Van Damme at the nearby opticians.

The German government came under fire Tuesday for failing to evacuate Afghan support staff before the Taliban took control of Afghanistan and a transitional government was formed.
Germany's bestselling daily, Bild, sharply criticized the government with a story titled "Germany's withdrawal from Afghanistan: Beer and wine were shipped – local staff are still staying," which blamed it for abandoning local Afghan staff who risked their lives for the Germany.
The German army shipped nearly 65,000 cans of beer and 340 bottles of wine to Germany while completing its troop pullout from Afghanistan at the end of June, the daily reported.
But hundreds of Afghan staff and family members were not granted a visa and were not evacuated promptly, although the Taliban made advances across the country.
"Those who worked for many years for Germany and risked their lives are apparently worth less than cans of beer for the federal government," the daily said in a news analysis piece.
Christoph Hoffmann, a lawmaker from the opposition Free Democratic Party, slammed Foreign Minister Heiko Maas for grave mistakes and failing to prioritize the evacuation of Afghans who worked for German ministries and agencies for many years.
"It's a shame," he told Bild, adding that the federal government "has failed to accurately assess the situation" in Afghanistan in the last couple of months.
At a parliamentary meeting in June, Hoffmann asked Maas about the government's plans to bring Afghan staff who had worked for Germany.
Maas said peace negotiations between the Afghan government and Taliban were likely to continue for some time and he rejected calls by opposition lawmakers to bring more Afghan personnel to Germany, including those who did not have a work contract with the German armed forces but worked for development agencies or other institutions.
During the televised debate, Maas said granting visas to those people and their families would have been a wrong message.
"Then we would be talking about not 2,000 people, but 20,000 people," Maas said and insisted that his government does not want to provoke new refugee flows.
Germany sent three military planes to evacuate remaining diplomatic personnel and Afghan staff Monday, but only one could land because of the chaos at Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport. The other planes were diverted to neighboring countries.
In the past couple of weeks, Berlin has evacuated nearly 2,000 local staff from Afghanistan, according to the government. But more than 10,000 were still trying to flee, including Afghans who worked for German development agencies, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and media outlets, as well as human rights activists and lawyers.
The Taliban declared the war in Afghanistan over after taking control of the presidential palace in Kabul, while Western nations scrambled Monday to evacuate their citizens amid chaos at Kabul airport as frantic Afghans searched for a way out.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said Sunday, "The Taliban have won with the judgment of their swords and guns, and are now responsible for the honor, property and self-preservation of their countrymen," after fleeing the country as the militants entered the capital virtually unopposed, saying he wanted to avoid bloodshed. The ensuing hours saw hundreds of Afghans desperate to leave flood Kabul airport.
"Today is a great day for the Afghan people and the mujahideen. They have witnessed the fruits of their efforts and their sacrifices for 20 years," Mohammad Naeem, the spokesperson for the Taliban's political office, told Qatar-based media outlet Al-Jazeera TV. "Thanks to God, the war is over in the country," he said.

Bamboo poles, beer crates, ladders and broken chairs: everyday objects form makeshift barricades on Hanoi's streets as authorities try to slow the spread of coronavirus.
Vietnam's capital has been in lockdown for more than a month but with daily case numbers refusing to budge, restrictions on movement have become even tighter.
The city is now divided into tiny segments, with movement between each extremely difficult.
"It is like living in a jail," 72-year-old Hanoi resident Ho Thi Anh said.
"No strangers can access our community," said Nguyen Ha Van, a 45-year-old volunteer guarding a barricade consisting of one steel barrier, a wooden table and a long wooden stick.
"It's good we set up barriers like this... it means our area is free of the virus," Ha told AFP.
Vu Manh Dung, a delivery driver, admitted everyone knew ways around the barricades but said he "strongly supports" the system.
"Of course there are ways in... but we have to abide by the regulations."

The monumental feat of wrappingthe Arc de Triomphe in 25,000 sq metres of material and posthumously fulfilling a 60-year dream for the artist Christo, had begun.
As more rolls of recyclable material appeared along with more rope technicians – a team of 95 in all – there was excitement, emotion and a few frayed nerves over an operation that combined art and engineering on a massive scale.
There was sadness, too, that the artists, Christo and his French wife, Jeanne-Claude, who had first imagined L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped in 1962 while renting a small room nearby, were not there to see it. The Bulgarian-born Christo Vladimirov Javacheff died in May last year, while his wife and artistic partner – the couple worked together under the name Christo – died in 2009.
Christo, who wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, left minutely detailed drawings and instructions covering every visual and artistic aspect of how he wanted the wrapped arch to look.

The work by the sculptor Emanuele Stifano is a tribute to La Spigolatrice di Sapri (The Gleaner of Sapri), written by the poet Luigi Mercantini in 1857. The poem is based on the story of a failed expedition against the Kingdom of Naples by Carlo Pisacane, one of the first Italian socialist thinkers.
A group of female politicians from the Democratic party’s unit in Palermo called for the statue to be knocked down. “Once again, we have to suffer the humiliation of seeing ourselves represented in the form of a sexualised body, devoid of soul and without any connection with the social and political issues of the story,” the group said in a statement.
Stifano defended his work, writing on Facebook that if it had been up to him the statue would have been “completely naked … simply because I am a lover of the human body”. He said it was “useless” to try to explain artwork to those “who absolutely only want to see depravity”.

A Danish artist is refusing to pay over €70,000 back to a local art museum in protest at what he called "miserable" working conditions and low pay.
Artist Jens Haaning received 534,000 Danish krone (€71,808) from the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg to recreate two previous works of art for an exhibition entitled "Work it Out," focused on the relationship between art and working life.
The museum expected Haaning to send them back two picture frames containing the cash, which would visualise the average annual income of a person in Denmark and Austria.
What they got were two empty frames and a note saying that Haaning had pocketed the money in order to create a new conceptual art piece called "Take the Money and Run".

The carroty crustacean had sat in the tank for weeks with no interest from buyers, and the couple initially thought about driving the lobster back to the ocean, a journey of nearly 1,000 km.
In the end, Lundquist and her husband bought the lobster – for C$16 – packed it in a box, kept its gills wet and took it to the Toronto aquarium.
On Wednesday, the aquarium announced that it had successfully resettled the lobster.

The miners spent their entire days there, working, eating and going to the bathroom in the mine.
It is thanks to the constant temperature of around 8C (46F) and the high concentration of salt at the mine that the miners’ faeces were preserved particularly well.
One of them, about 2,700 years old, was found to contain two fungi, Penicillium roqueforti and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Both are known today for their use in food making.

The largest lab-grown steak yet produced has been unveiled by the Israeli company MeaTech 3D (https://meatech3d.com/), weighing in at nearly 4oz (110 grams).
The steak is composed of real muscle and fat cells, derived from tissue samples taken from a cow. Living bovine stem cells were incorporated into “bio-inks” that were then placed in the company’s 3D printer to produce the steak. It was then matured in an incubator, in which the stem cells differentiated into fat and muscle cells.
This week, scientists at the University of Lisbon in Portugal announced a GFI-funded plan to make seabass fillets from 3D-printed cells (https://gfieurope.org/blog/scientists-use-algae-to-cultivate-boneless-seabass-fillet/) using ingredients from algae to create edible scaffolds for the cells to grow on.

Miss World 2021 temporarily postpones global broadcast finale in Puerto Rico due to health and safety interest of contestants, staff, crew and general public
The finale will be rescheduled at Puerto Rico Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot within the next 90 days
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - After meeting with the virologists and medical experts hired to oversee the Miss World 2021 event and discussing with the Puerto Rico Health Department, the decision has been made by the organizers of the event to postpone the globally broadcast finale at the Puerto Rico Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot to be held within the next 90 days.
As of yesterday, additional safety measures were implemented in the best interest of the contestants, production team and spectators, understanding the event increased risks on the stage and in the dressing room. However, after additional positive cases were confirmed this morning after consulting with health officials and experts, the postponement decision was made.
The next step according to the medical experts is immediate quarantine, pending observation and further testing according to best practices in situations like this.
Once and only when contestants and staff are cleared by health officials and advisors, will contestants and related staff return to their home countries.
“We are very much looking forward to the return of our contestants, (who we have grown to know and love), to compete for the Miss World crown” said Julia Morley, CEO of Miss World Ltd. Puerto Rico offers a safe environment and a spectacular backdrop for filming the Miss World Festival!”

Miyashita works with a team of about 30 students that has produced a variety of flavour-related devices, including a fork that makes food taste richer. He said he built the TTTV prototype over the past year and that a commercial version would cost about 100,000 yen (£653) to make.
Potential applications include distance learning for sommeliers and cooks, and tasting games and quizzes, he said.

After the grey squirrel bit more than a dozen people in the town of Buckley, Flintshire, drawing blood on several occasions, Reynolds caught it in a humane trap and had the animal taken away by the RSPCA.
Reynolds, a 65-year-old carer, began feeding Stripe in the summer and for months it made regular trips to her garden, but then it began to bite the hand that fed it.
She reported what had happened on a local social media group page and was shocked at how many others said they too had been bitten.
Reynolds felt she had to take action and bought a humane trap to catch Stripe. The RSPCA came and picked the squirrel up, transferring it from her cage to theirs in her bathroom to stop it from escaping.
There is no happy ending. The RSPCA said it had no choice but to put Stripe down as it is illegal to release a grey squirrel back into the wild.
