The repair bonus scheme is part of a wider push by the French government, starting at the end of last year, to reform the textile industry, one of the most polluting on the planet, and to combat what is termed fast fashion.

Former Sony engineer Hiroshi Ichigaya, the jacket’s inventor, found the inspiration for it when he travelled through south-east Asia in 1988 after taking early retirement.

Minister's awkward EU summit kiss causes controversy

Croatia's foreign minister sparked controversy by greeting his German counterpart with a kiss, at an EU ministers meeting in Berlin on Thursday.

Gordan Grlić-Radman shook hands with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, then leaned forward to kiss her.

He has been criticised in some Croatian media reports, with women's rights activist Rada Boric describing the incident as "highly inappropriate".

Mr Grlić-Radman defended the moment as a "warm, human approach to a colleague". He said it was "maybe an awkward moment" and apologised "to whoever took it that way."

Environmental critics have cautioned against buying new sweaters to take part in Christmas jumper day, an annual publicity push every December by the charity Save the Children.

The environmental charity Hubbub reported in 2019 that 12m jumpers were forecast to be bought that year, despite 65m already languishing in UK wardrobes. The novelty jumpers are, the charity said, one of the worst examples of fast fashion, now recognised as hugely damaging to the environment.

As well as triggering huge levels of waste, Hubbub’s research showed that most new sweaters contain plastic. Its analysis of 108 garments on sale from 11 high street and online retailers – including Primark, George at Asda and Topshop/Topman – found that 95% of the jumpers were made wholly or partly of plastic materials.

A spokesperson for Hubbub urged people to “swap, buy secondhand or rewear” rather than buy new.

The waterproof women’s coat was bought online by a woman in Derbyshire in the Black Friday sale. When it arrived on 22 November, she could feel a hard rectangular item in the right sleeve, which restricted the movement of her elbow.

After cutting into the coat to remove the item, she discovered what looked like a prison identification card, with a mugshot of a man apparently in a prisoner’s uniform in front of a height chart, and the name of the prison in China.

Handwritten notes from Chinese prisoners occasionally turn up in consumer products, such as in 2019, when a note written in English was found by a six-year-old girl in a Christmas card sold by Tesco. The note said “We are foreign prisoners in Shanghai Qinqpu prison China. Forced to work against our will. Please help us and notify human rights organization.”

Last month, the French broadcaster Arte aired a documentary about a handwritten Chinese letter that was found inside a pregnancy test bought in Paris. The anonymous note said: “Dear friends, do you know that behind your peaceful life, there are Chinese prisoners,” according to the documentary.

Customs officials are said to have accompanied Schwarzenegger to a bank to withdraw cash, before he was allowed to continue his journey.

Câu chuyện quái đản của ‘mục sư nấm’ David Hodges

Thành lập Giáo Hội Ambrosia ở San Francisco với niềm tin rằng nấm ảo giác là một… bí tích có thể giúp nhận ra mục đích thực sự của cuộc đời, “mục sư” David Hodges nói rằng mình đã gặp Chúa vào năm 2019 nhờ… cây nấm ma thuật.

Đó là “(một) buổi lễ kết thúc với ba sinh vật vàng chói rực rỡ, tự nhận là những vị thần nấm lâu đời nhất, ngồi xuống với tôi và cho tôi biết lý do tại sao tôi phải trải qua mọi thứ trong đời, họ cần tôi để làm gì, và những gì tôi cần phải làm…” – David Hodges kể.

David Hodges, 42 tuổi, người sáng lập và lãnh đạo Giáo hội Ambrosia, mô tả tổ chức của mình là “phi giáo phái,” được thành lập dựa trên niềm tin rằng cần sa, nấm psilocybin gây ảo giác là những “bí tích” có thể sử dụng làm “công cụ tâm linh.”

David Hodges thậm chí đưa ra “công thức” cụ thể, cho biết ăn nấm ảo giác với liều lượng bao nhiêu thì đạt “cảnh giới” nào…

Thành lập Giáo Hội Ambrosia năm năm trước tại Oakland, gần đây David Hodges mở địa điểm thứ hai tại SoMa, ở San Francisco – tờ Forbes ngày 17 Tháng Ba 2024 cho biết.

Cảnh sát từng đột kích vào “nhà thờ” của David Hodges ở Oakland vào năm 2020, tịch thu cần sa, nấm và tiền mặt trị giá $200,000 nhưng không bắt đương sự. Điều quái lạ là thành viên của “giáo phái nấm” có thể được nhận “bí tích” cần sa, nấm gây ảo giác và thuốc gây ảo giác gọi là DMT (thành phần hoạt chất trong ayahuasca), đổi lại, họ quyên góp tiền cho nhà thờ. “Mục sư nấm” David Hodges nói rằng ông được truyền đạt “giáo lý” thông qua “tổ tiên xa xưa” mà ông gặp ở “phía bên kia” khi vấp ngã, từ đó ông nhất mực tuân theo những nguyên lý cơ bản về sự phát triển bản thân và quyền tự quyết. Năm 2019, David Hodges bắt đầu tự phong là… giáo chủ, với việc mở một cơ sở tôn giáo ở Oakland. Lúc đầu, David Hodges tổ chức các buổi giảng vào Chủ Nhật hàng tuần, lúc 4 giờ 20 phút chiều. Cuối năm 2919, “nhà thờ” của David Hodges cung cấp nấm cho tín đồ và “mục sư nấm” David Hodges cũng bắt đầu truyền dạy lý thuyết của nhà thực vật học thần bí Terence McKenna, người thai nghén Lý thuyết về vượn người Đồ Đá, cho rằng khoảng 100,000 năm trước, con người sơ khai đã vô tình ăn nấm psilocybin và các chất gây ảo giác – như một “chất xúc tác tiến hóa” – nhờ vậy mà ngôn ngữ và tôn giáo mới có thể được sinh ra!

Tiếp đó, Hodges nhào nặn lý thuyết “vượn người ăn nấm” để tạo ra cái mà ông gọi là Học thuyết tiến hóa tôn giáo (Doctrine of Religious Evolution), giảng rằng nấm ma thuật đã cung cấp cho loài người nguyên thủy “kiến thức tức thời” bắt đầu từ 2.5 triệu năm trước.

Hodges nói: “Bạn thu thập kiến thức từ bên kia để giúp bạn tồn tại trong thế giới này.” (“You get knowledge from the other side to help you exist in this world.”)

Cuối năm 2019, David Hodges thực hiện “cuộc hành trình” tìm triết lý sống bằng cách sử dụng nấm ảo giác liều cao. Trong một khoảnh khắc được xem là “thời khắc của tâm linh” khi uống liều lượng lớn (20 gram nấm), David Hodges nói rằng mình được đưa qua thiên đường, địa ngục và vũ trụ bên ngoài phạm vi không gian lẫn thời gian và cuối cùng gặp… Chúa.

“Tôi đến một nơi có ánh sáng thuần khiết. Tôi không tồn tại, không có gì tồn tại, chỉ có duy nhất một ý thức, và đó là cái mà tôi gọi là ý thức tồn tại trước tất cả những thứ khác,” Hodges nói.

David Hodges nói rằng “giáo phái nấm” của ông là “tôn giáo lâu đời nhất, chân chính nhất trên Trái đất.” Nguyên lý trung tâm của nó: Sử dụng một lượng lớn nấm sẽ cho phép tín đồ bước vào trạng thái tâm linh mà họ có thể “tiếp cận với thần thánh,” và “giao tiếp với tổ tiên [của họ].”

Tuy nhiên, vấn đề ở đây không phải là chuyện tâm linh, mà “bí tích” của David Hodges đều là những thứ bất hợp pháp, xét theo luật ở hầu hết tiểu bang. Tín đồ không “mua.” Họ chỉ “quyên tiền”: 1/8 ounce (khoảng 3.5 gram) nấm có giá từ $20 đến $40 trong khi một ounce (khoảng 28 gram) lên tới $260.

Cả “hai cơ sở tôn giáo” cũng không giống giáo đường mà hệt như tiệm tạp hóa, nơi thành viên giáo phái đến, gặp “nhân viên nhà thờ,” được xem danh sách các món hàng, từ hoa cần sa, nấm khô, chocolate psilocybin đến thuốc lá điện tử.

Có nhiều máy rút tiền ATM xung quanh và “giáo dân” có thể “dâng lễ” để nhận được “bí tích.”

Cả hai “nhà thờ” cũng không có ghế dài. Hodges không còn thường xuyên tổ chức các buổi lễ, ngoại trừ mỗi năm một lần vào Chủ Nhật Phục Sinh.

Trong một bài báo năm 2023, tờ SFGate viết rằng việc David Hodges lập nên cái gọi là Giáo Hội Ambrosia chẳng khác gì tạo nên một cơ sở trá hình nhân danh tôn giáo để mua bán ma túy, rằng David Hodges có thể sớm muộn gì cũng vào tù. Tuy nhiên, đến nay, đương sự vẫn an nhiên tự tại, và nhiều “tín đồ” của ông vẫn tiếp tục ăn nấm để… gặp Chúa!

Nancy Gonzalez was arrested in 2022 in Cali, Colombia, and later extradited to the US for running a sprawling multiyear conspiracy that involved recruiting couriers to transport her handbags on commercial flights to high-end showrooms and New York fashion events – all in violation of US wildlife laws.

Prosecutors countered that Gonzalez had acquired great wealth and an opulent lifestyle, which contrasted with the couriers she recruited to smuggle her merchandise into the US. The couriers were instructed to say that the items were gifts for their relatives if they were asked any questions by customs agents.

According to the testimony of her co-defendants and former employees, ahead of important fashion events, Gonzalez, described as a micromanager, would recruit as many as 40 passengers to carry four designer handbags each on commercial flights. In this way, prosecutors estimate that she smuggled goods that fetched as much as US$2m in the US.

The stamp, which costs €1.96, depicts a baguette decorated with a red, white and blue ribbon. It has a print run of 594,000 copies.

According to the Parisian shop Le Carre d’encre, which sells it, the stamp has a “bakery scent”. The ink used on the stamps contains microcapsules which provide the fragrance.

“And the difficulty for us is to apply this ink without breaking the capsules, so that the smell can then be released by the customer rubbing on the stamp.”

The Ladies Lounge, which opened in 2020, saw women who entered the space pampered by male butlers and served champagne while surrounded by some of the museum’s finest pieces of art.

Picassos were among the artworks previously hanging in the museum’s Ladies Lounge, a women-only area created by Kaechele which included, as part of the artist’s intent, men’s experiences of exclusion.

Kaechele said in March she was “absolutely delighted” the case had made it to the tribunal, after a complaint by Sydney man Jason Lau.
“The men are experiencing Ladies Lounge, their experience of rejection is the artwork,” she said at the time.

Social media posts following Dhillon’s prayer indicated that some far-right Trumpists had been polarized by the sight of a non-Christian form of religious devotion on the convention stage in Milwaukee.

Perhaps the earliest response to Dhillon’s prayer came from white nationalist and antisemitic activist Nick Fuentes, who said of the prayer in his live stream of the convention’s first night: “This is blasphemy. This is total blasphemy. Oh, fuck off. What a joke.”

In his post-stream summary, Fuentes, who leads the so-called “Groyper” movement under the slogan “Christ is King”, added that “Jesus Christ needs to be front and center,” and said: “Jesus saved Trump’s life on Saturday and no one wants to give him credit at this convention.”

Fuentes’s acolytes followed suit. As the prayer was ending, an X account associated with the Fuentes-aligned “America First” website posted: “RNC promotes blasphemy and Sikh idolatry moments after Lutheran benediction.”

The far-right podcaster and internet personality Stew Peters took a similar line on X, posting: “Day 1 of the RNC was complete with satanic chants and multiple prayers to FALSE GODS.”

Two major Japanese airports have already asked travellers not to ride motorised suitcases within their facilities, according to Kyodo news agency, while police are urging domestic retailers to warn customers of the strict laws concerning their use.

In recent years motorised luggage, similar to children’s scooters but powered by lithium-ion batteries, have become more common among travellers, while also being popularised by celebrities like Paris Hilton and Shilpa Shetty.

According to Kyodo, Japan currently classifies the electric suitcases, which are popular in the rest of Asia, as “motorised vehicles that can be ridden on roads only with the required safety equipment and a driving licence”.

In June, a Chinese woman in her 30s, studying in Japan, was referred to prosecutors for driving without a licence, after she allegedly rode a three-wheeled suitcase on a sidewalk in Osaka on 31 March, according to Osaka Prefectural Police.

Under Japan’s traffic laws, the woman’s suitcase, which can travel up to 13km an hour, is categorised as a “motorised bicycle”, the same as some mopeds. The police reiterated to the public in June that licenses are required for such mobile luggage.

In July, a boy from Indonesia rode a motorised suitcase past pedestrians along a street in Osaka’s bustling Dotonbori shopping district, according to Kyodo, which said his family was surprised to learn that a driving licence was mandatory for such vehicles in Japan.

Although balcony power is only a fraction of its solar energy capacity, Germany remains far and away the European leader in solar installation.

Kay Granger, 81, has represented Texas’s 12th congressional district, which includes part of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, since 1997. And beginning in January 2023 she spent more than a year as the chairperson of the powerful House appropriations committee.

But months after announcing her plans to retire when her term ended in early 2025, Granger largely disappeared from the public eye. Her congressional website shows her last vote was on 24 July

The reporter, Carlos Turcios, eventually received a tip from a local resident that Granger had moved into an assisted living center specializing in memory care. After going to the facility in question to determine whether Granger indeed lived there, the assistant executive director confirmed, “This is her home,” according to a story that Turcios published on Friday in the Dallas Express.

Free condoms for competitors at the Winter Olympics have run out within a record-breaking three days, according to La Stampa.

“The supplies ran out in just three days,” an anonymous athlete told the Italian newspaper. “They promised us more will arrive, but who knows when.”

“In Paris the athletes received 300,000 condoms – two per day each – but the numbers for these Winter Games were significantly lower: not even 10,000,” La Stampa’s report states.

Just under 3,000 athletes are competing at the Winter Olympics, compared to around 10,500 in the Paris Games two years ago.

It began in Seoul 1988 to raise awareness among athletes and young people about sexually transmitted disease prevention— a topic that shouldn’t cause embarrassment.”
