Yellowstone park officials kill baby bison after man picked up animal
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/may/25/yellowstone-kill-bison-calf
The calf became separated from its mother when the herd crossed the Lamar river in north-eastern Yellowstone on Saturday.
The unidentified man pushed the struggling calf up from the river and onto a roadway, park officials said.Human interference with young wildlife can cause animals to shun their offspring. Park rangers tried repeatedly to reunite the calf with the herd but were unsuccessful.
At one point, visitors saw the calf walking up to and following cars and people. This created a hazard, so park staff killed the animal.
Park officials are investigating the bison calf incident. The suspect was a white male in his 40s or 50s who was wearing a blue shirt and black pants, the statement said.

Workers at Taste by Spellbound in the town of Avon were loading cakes into a van for delivery on Wednesday when the bear showed up.
Surveillance video obtained by WTNH shows bakery workers walking around the side of the business to try to scare the bear, but then running away after it scares them.
The video shows the bear dragging a container of cupcakes from the garage into the parking lot. Stephens said the bear ate 60 cupcakes.

New overtime rules for goatherds could increase pay to $14,000 a month
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/may/30/firefighting-goats-california-employment-law
Companies typically put about one herder in charge of 400 goats. Many of the herders in California are from Peru and live in employer-provided trailers near grazing sites.
But a state agency has ruled that’s no longer allowed, meaning that goatherds would be subject to the same labor laws as other farm workers.
That would mean goatherds would be entitled to ever higher pay – up to $14,000 a month. Last year a budget trailer bill delayed that pay requirement for one year, but it’s set to take effect on 1 January 2024 if nothing is done to change the law.

Over 500 dolphins killed in Faroe Islands since hunt resumed in May
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/15/dolphins-killed-faroe-islands-hunt-resumed-may
In the Faroese tradition known as grindadráp, or grind for short, hunters surround pilot whales and dolphins with a wide semi-circle of fishing boats and drive them into a shallow bay where they are beached. Fishers on the shore slaughter them with knives.
Every summer, images of the bloody hunt make headlines around the world and are met with outrage among animal rights defenders who consider it barbaric.
The environmental NGO Sea Shepherd, which managed to disrupt the 2014 hunt with its boats, criticised the fact that Danish navy vessels were authorised to intervene to block environmentalists.

Iceland’s government has said it is suspending this year’s whale hunt until the end of August due to animal welfare concerns, a move that is likely to bring the controversial practice to an end.
Animal rights groups and environmentalists hailed the decision, with the Humane Society International calling it “a major milestone in compassionate whale conservation”.
Recent monitoring by Iceland’s Food and Veterinary Authority on the fin whale hunt found that the killing of the animals took too long based on the main objectives of the Animal Welfare Act.
Shocking video clips broadcast by the veterinary authority showed a whale’s agony as it was hunted for five hours.

giant African land snails prompts quarantine in south Florida
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jun/22/giant-african-land-snails-florida-quarantine
The invasive snails have voracious appetites and consume at least 500 species of plants, according to Florida’s department of agriculture, which is fearful for the state’s lucrative growing industries of citrus and other fruits and vegetables.
The snails are illegal to import or possess in the US without a permit, and authorities have been trying for years to eradicate them. They can damage buildings, as well as destroying crops, and in some quarters are even considered a delicacy.
Invasions have occurred in other areas of Florida on an almost annual basis since. Pasco county was placed under quarantine last June after more than a thousand of the snails, females of which can produce up to 2,500 eggs a year, were discovered in New Port Richey.

Since Wednesday, New Yorkers running, biking, walking or on subways, have reported tiny insects, moving in cloud-like swarms, around parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, in some cases making it hard to breathe
“They are aphids not gnats/midges/flies,” Sorkin said in a email. “I don’t know the species, unfortunately.”
The insects currently worrying New Yorkers are simply aphids transitioning to their winged stage, Grimadi told the outlet.
“When a population becomes very large … the emergence of winged morphs is impressive,” he said. “The good news? It means we have a healthy environment! No pesticides!”

“She’s trapped at the surface, and the males take turns. Once they’ve all mated with her, they leave her alone,” the narrator says, accompanied by underwater footage of the encounter and dramatic music.
The BSA said the footage included “the male dolphins swarming around the female with their genitalia visible, and at one point a male visibly entered the female … accompanied by audio of dolphin cries”.

‘floating gold’ in dead whale
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/04/las-palmas-pathologist-ambergris-block-dead-sperm-whale
When a sperm whale washed up dead on a beach in the Canary Island of La Palma no one imagined a valuable treasure was hidden in its entrails. Ambergris is a rare substance, often known as floating gold, that has been the holy grail of perfumers for centuries.
Whales eat large quantities of squid and cuttlefish, most which cannot be digested and is vomited out. But some remains, and over the years binds together in the whale’s intestines to form ambergris.
In one of his many digressions in Moby-Dick, the novelist Herman Melville dedicates an entire chapter to ambergris, which he describes as “soft, waxy, and so highly fragrant and spicy, that it is largely used in perfumery … Who would think, then, that such fine ladies and gentlemen should regale themselves with an essence found in the inglorious bowels of a sick whale! Yet so it is!”

Don and Jan Schultz, the Washington Post said, were woken by growling from their Australian cattle dog, Panda, which they initially ignored. When Panda’s alarm grew louder, and the couple heard a thud, they understood their new home in New Iberia had an unwanted visitor.
Don Schultz added: “Alligators really like to go after dogs … so we’re assuming that it probably was stalking” Panda.
The dog, home-surveillance footage showed, had been venturing out each night at 1am to patrol the property. The couple said they thought the alligator followed the dog’s scent to the house.
On Tuesday in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, a 9ft 9in alligator killed a 69-year-old woman who was out walking her dogs. The alligator was euthanised, authorities said.

The giraffes, seven males and seven females, travelled more than 800 miles (1,300km) from a private game farm near Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa region of central Namibia to Iona national park in the south-west corner of Angola.
The new arrivals are the first Angolan giraffes to be brought back to the country’s national parks in an effort to restore Angola’s wildlife, which was decimated during decades of conflict. The giraffes were thought to have been extinct since the 1990s.
Angola’s four decades of civil war, which began after independence from Portugal in 1975, wrought devastation on Iona, causing massive declines in wildlife populations and the local extinction of rhinos and elephants. But some species clung on, including zebra, oryx, springbok, cheetahs, leopards, brown hyena and endemic reptiles.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/17/genetic-passport-scheme-beziers-france-dog-faeces
Local mayor Robert Ménard, a former journalist and co-founder of Reporters Sans Frontières, says inhabitants and visitors are fed up with faeces on the town’s pavements. He plans to introduce a two-year experiment to trace and fine those who fail to clear up after their pets.
“We have to punish to make people behave better,” Ménard, elected on a far-right ticket in 2014 and reelected in 2020, told France Bleu radio.
Under the planned scheme, dog owners will be required to take their pets to a vet or ask one of the town’s veterinary specialists for a free saliva sample, which will be genetically tested and a document issued. Those subsequently stopped without their dog’s genetic passport will be fined €38 (£32.60).
Dog excrement found on the pavement will be collected and tested and the details sent to police who will consult the national pet registers and match it to a specific owner who will face a bill for street cleaning up to €122, Ménard said.
Ménard told French radio: “I can’t take any more of this [dog] mess. The state has said nothing against this scheme this time and thinks the same thing. This has to be done and not just in Béziers … We need to penalise people so that they behave properly.
“We did a count and we pick up more than 1,000 messes a month, sometimes a lot more, just in the town centre. It just cannot go on.”

The estimated 60 to 100 rabbits are descendants of a group a backyard breeder illegally let loose when she moved away two years ago and they are lionhead rabbits, named after the furry flowing mane around their heads.
Jenada Isles resident Alicia Griggs is spearheading efforts to raise the thousands it would cost for a rescue group to capture, neuter, vaccinate, shelter and then give the bunnies away to good homes.

The advisory directed visitors to stay more than 25 yards (23 metres) away from all large animals, including bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose and coyotes, and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.
Last year in late May, a 25-year-old visitor from Ohio was gored and tossed 10 feet into the air. A month later, a 34-year-old tourist from Colorado was charged and gored near Giant Geyser. The following day, a 71-year-old woman from Pennsylvania was gored by a bull bison.

(N.H.K) [qd]

Wild boar are on the menu
https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/jul/25/us-wild-boar-invasive-species-food-menu
Christopher Columbus brought the first eight pigs, intended as food, to the western hemisphere with his voyage to Cuba in 1493. The wild descendants of those pigs and others, estimated to number 6 million in 35 states, have been wreaking havoc ever since; annually, they cause $2.5bn in damage to crops, forestry and livestock producers. They can spread disease to both humans and domestic animals. With upwards of 2 million of these beasts in Texas alone, the state has become the epicenter of a massive nationwide pig problem.
In the 1890s, as wild game was increasingly depleted across the US landscape, elite hunters brought the first 13 Eurasian wild boars, most likely purchased from Germany’s Black forest, to a hunting preserve in New Hampshire. Notoriously smart and able to avoid capture, they were ideal targets for sport hunters craving a chase.
When the hogs first come in, they’re quarantined and dewormed to get rid of parasites. The pigs are closely monitored and allowed to de-stress while being fed a varied diet of produce and food products destined for a landfill. The result of this labor-intensive practice is a rich, red-colored meat that some customers compare to the Wagyu of pork, said owner Pamela Fay: “It’s like the difference from farm-fresh eggs compared to those you get from a grocery store.”

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/jul/27/honey-ant-honeypot-australian-science-benefits-found-indigenous-western-australia
The Australian honeypot ant, Camponotus inflatus, has been used by First Nations people as a bush food and in traditional medicine for thousands of years, including to treat colds and sore throats.
Specialised worker ants, known as repletes, are overfed nectar by other ants and produce honey that engorges their abdomens to the size of small, amber marbles. Taking on sacrificial roles as “living pantries”, they hang off the roofs of their nests and regurgitate the honey during times of food scarcity.
The scientists found the ant honey was equally effective against golden staph as manuka honey, and more effective than jarrah honey, which are both produced by honeybees.

The primates have distinct long limbs and tails akin to spider legs and live mostly off of fruits, leaves, nuts, seeds and sometimes insects.
Thursday’s incident follows a separate attempt last November where US authorities charged eight individuals, including a Cambodian wildlife official, with smuggling long-tailed macaques, another endangered monkey.

UK man bitten by cat contracts previously unknown and ‘extensive’ bacterial infection
A 48-year-old UK man bitten by a stray cat developed “painful” hand swelling and “extensive” infection caused by a previously unknown bacterium, a new study has revealed.
The research, published recently in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, describes the case of a 48-year-old obese man, who was admitted to the emergency department in 2020 with hand swelling, multiple puncture wounds and abrasions, about eight hours after sustaining bites from a feral cat.
Researchers, including those from Cambridge University Hospitals in the UK, discovered a novel species of the bacterium Globicatella that caused “extensive soft tissue infection” in the man bitten by the cat.
Previous research has shed light on the potential role of cats as reservoirs of yet-undiscovered pathogens and potential zoonotic infections that can jump from animals to humans as their long, sharp teeth can cause deep bite injuries.
While the man was treated for potential infection, administered a booster dose of the tetanus vaccine, given a number of oral antibiotics and discharged, he returned to the emergency department 24 hours later with an infection in his left little and right middle fingers.

She was “safely immobilized” by tranquilizer dart and apprehended Friday morning, according to state officials, and will now be moved to a sanctuary in southern Colorado.
Hank, technically known to the state as bear 64F, may now lose custody of her three cubs as they may be transferred to a facility in California’s Sonoma county “in hopes they can discontinue the negative behaviors”.
Before she was apprehended, authorities had tried sirens, de-activated tasers and beanbag rounds to deter the marauder. They described a bear that had “lost all fear of people” and was therefore “potentially dangerous”.

All the while, the snake was striking her in the face, causing her eyeglasses to chip and spewing a liquid she assumes was venom, Jones recalled.
Jones said the hawk retreated and returned to its prey about four times, slapping her in the face with its wings.

France’s holidaymakers dump pets at roadside
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/aug/15/frances-animal-shelters-reach-capacity-as-holidaymakers-dump-pets-at-roadside
More than 100,000 pets are abandoned to fend for themselves in France every year, more than half of them dumped just before or during long summer holidays when they are often found next to routes heading for the coast or countryside. Last summer, 60,000 pets were dumped, and animal rescuers say the figure is expected to be higher this year.
The Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) raised the alarm last week, appealing for funds to help “saturated” refuges after it had accepted 12,000 animals since the beginning of summer.
Animal campaigners say refuges are facing a double whammy: inflation has hit families facing rocketing household, pet feed and veterinary bills and has also reduced the number of adoptions.

Spotless giraffe born at Tennessee zoo

The female giraffe, born on 31 July, is a uniform brown color, lacking the distinctive patched pattern that giraffes – along with their exceptionally long necks – are known for. Brights zoo said the giraffe is already 6ft tall and is under the care of her mother and zoo staff.
The zoo believes the giraffe is one of a kind, given that giraffes are very rarely born without their mottled appearance, which primarily serves as a form of camouflage in the wild.
The zoo has announced a contest for the public to name the new giraffe. The shortlisted options are Kipekee, which means “unique” in Swahili; Firayali, which means unusual; Shakiri, which means “she is most beautiful”; and Jamella, which is “one of great beauty”.

“That has only just started, and prices were already down at auction this morning,” says Haruko, a fish trader, as she sits in the shade with a carton of fruit juice while other workers hose down the concrete forecourt.
“That,” she indicates with the wave of a hand in the direction of the sea, is the start of the most controversial stage in the long, and fraught, task of decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after it was struck by a powerful earthquake and tsunami in March 2011, which caused three of its reactors to go into meltdown.
In images broadcast live online on Thursday, engineers behind computer screens opened valves to allow the first batch of 1.3m tonnes of wastewater from the plant to flow into the sea.
China’s decision to ban all Japanese seafood in response to the discharge added to fears among people in coastal communities near the stricken plant that pumping “contaminated” water into the sea will sound the death knell for the local fishing industry.

Humane alternatives to killing rampant creatures
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/27/put-pest-animal-species-on-the-pill-dont-cull-them-says-scientist
One solution is to develop boar contraceptives. “Preventing these animals from breeding is a humane way to limit numbers,” added Massei, who will be speaking at the European vertebrate pest management conference in Florence.
The delivery method is known as the Boar-Operated System and it uses metal cones placed over dishes of food that only wild pigs can lift with their snouts. Other animals cannot access the plates. “That means we can get contraceptives into boar and only boar,” said Massei.
A similar approach has already been implemented to tackle grey squirrels. Mixed with hazelnut spread – a top squirrel treat – the drug is placed in pots in feeding boxes that only they can access. The environment minister, Richard Benyon, recently argued that the project could help eradicate the grey squirrel in the UK – without killing them.

It is easy for the birds to find food among the mountains of garbage in the dump at Los Barrios, near Cádiz, that receives the waste of 400,000 people living in Gibraltar and the surrounding area.Since July ornithologists have counted 210,000 kites and 125,000 storks crossing the strait.
But many Spanish and central European storks have chosen to stay in Spain, feeding from the dump, rather than make the long journey south. As a result, there is now a stable population of about 37,000 birds wintering there, according to SEO/Birdlife.
Researchers say that as well as food, the birds eat a lot of plastic, rubber and toxic substances on the landfills. There are also rats, which the kites hunt.

By about 9.15am, police said most of the five million bees had been safely collected and the crates were being hauled away. Some crates had been left behind for the uncollected bees to return to them on their own.

Rhesus monkeys are a menace in many areas in India’s national capital, running across busy roads without warning – putting both themselves and motorists at risk – and often attacking unsuspecting pedestrians or residents.
The langur, a bigger primate with a black face, is commonly used by authorities in the city to scare away monkeys, officials said.
Apart from placing the cutouts of langurs along major roads and in locations that monkeys tend to frequent, the NDMC has deployed “30 to 40 people” who mock their sounds to create the impression that the animals are alive and moving.

Parisian stray cat called Félicette was blasted far from Earth
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/sep/09/first-cat-space-felicette-orbit-humans-earth-atmosphere
A small black-and-white Parisian stray, Félicette, flew on a French rocket (https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/space-missions/felicette-first-cat-space) on a sub-orbital mission in October 1963 that reached an altitude of 154km, taking her to a place where no feline had gone before – or since.
In the early 60s, Russia preferred dogs, the US generally chose monkeys.
But France decided to be different. A total of 14 stray cats were gathered by staff at France’s space agency Cerma – Centre d’Enseignement et de Recherches de Médecine Aéronautique – for selection as feline astronauts, though the cats were deliberately not given names in order to prevent scientists from becoming too fond of them. The cat selected to travel to space was simply known as C341.
Then, after news was announced of its flight on a Veronique rocket on 18 October 1963 and subsequent safe return to Earth, the French press decided this feline trailblazer had to have a name. They picked Felix after the cartoon cat character, only to discover that C341 was female. Her name was adjusted to Félicette, as a result.

The American XL bully dog breed will be banned by the end of the year after a series of attacks, Rishi Sunak has said.
On Friday, it was confirmed Ian Price, 52, had died after being attacked by two dogs in Stonnall, West Midlands, with police saying they believed the animals, both of which were killed, were XL bully dogs.
Footage of an XL bully dog attacking people in the street in Birmingham, including a 11-year-old girl who sustained shoulder and arm injuries, prompted outcry this week. The XL bully breed was linked to six of the 10 fatal dog attacks in the UK in 2022, and has been involved in at least two fatalities this year.
The campaigner Emma Whitfield, whose 10-year-old son, Jack Lis, was killed by an XL bully in south Wales in 2021, said in response to the announcement: “I’m sobbing. I’m sat on my own sobbing. I don’t even have words right now.”

Puppy mills are high-volume breeding facilities that produce puppies for profit and disregard the needs of the puppies and their mothers, according to the Humane Society. Animals in puppy mills are treated as cash crops and are often trapped in overcrowded cages with minimal shelter from extreme weather and forced to sit and sleep in their own excrement, said the non-profit Paws.
Many suffer from malnutrition or starvation as a result of inadequate or unsanitary food and water while adult animals are bred until they can no longer produce before being destroyed or discarded, added Paws.
There are an estimated 10,000 puppy mills active across the country, with 500,000 dogs kept solely for breeding purposes at these facilities, according to the Humane Society. Approximately 2.6 million dogs are sold each year puppy mills.

Palmer, who previously worked as a vet on salmon farms, cites parasitic sea lice that build up in farms and can disperse and infect wild salmon and sea trout, with sometimes fatal consequences.
Marine Stewardship Council rates organic and Aquaculture Stewardship Council-certified Atlantic salmon as “green” in its traffic light system, with most other farmed salmon rated “amber”, meaning improvements are needed. Pandas are the latest victims of tensions between the U.S. and China
The Smithsonian National Zoo’s three giant pandas are returning to China, as tensions between Washington and Beijing fester.
Three of China’s cutest and most beloved diplomats left Washington on Wednesday, marking a turning point in the struggling relationship between their home country and the United States.
The diplomats were not wolf warriors, but a trio of giant pandas who came to represent China’s burgeoning global ambitions — as well as Washington’s most popular zoo attraction. The arrival and departure of the pandas, which spawned merch lines and a cult-like following, traces the half-century relationship trajectory between a longtime global power and an increasingly influential country that has grown to become its biggest competitor.
“There’s no doubt that this is a reflection of the state of bilateral relations,” said Yun Sun, a China expert at the Stimson Center, a foreign affairs think tank. “The pandas are supposed to unify the relationship with the United States, and the relationship between the U.S. and China is so bad anyway, what’s the point of the panda being here?”
Tian Tian and Mei Xiang arrived at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington in 2000, taking the place of a panda duo that had recently passed away after coming to the U.S. in 1972. (The third departed panda, Xiao Qi Ji, was born to Mei in 2020.) Although American zoos had giant pandas in the early parts of the 20th century, the arrival of the first duo, Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing, kicked off American panda fever. Former Chinese leader Mao Zedong had promised former President Richard Nixon those first pandas during the American leader’s groundbreaking visit to China.
Back then, the pandas were a symbol of a new friendship between the two countries — a way for China, which hoped to integrate more with the rest of the world, to draw the United States closer to its flank.
But as the species became increasingly endangered, panda diplomacy evolved in order to better meet conservation goals and serve China’s strategic interests. Since the 1980s, the government has given pandas to foreign zoos on short- and long-term scientific loans, subject to renegotiation with Chinese officials and greater scrutiny from Chinese scientists over the treatment and care of their pandas.
Now, as China increases its network of influence across the globe that rivals the U.S., continuing these partnerships with U.S. zoos yields diminishing returns for their investment.
This panda rationing allows China an opportunity to increase the value of panda loans in the future and “rethink and renegotiate a concept of exactly what these loans mean,” said E. Elena Songster, a history professor at St. Mary’s College of California and an expert on panda diplomacy.
“If [China] has fewer pandas out there, they’re even more prized, and it can probably negotiate more favorable terms with relation to future agreements,” Songster said.
There have been some recent bright spots in U.S.-China relations. The announcement of a meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping next week in San Francisco represents a breakthrough in a relationship that faltered earlier this year, mostly after a Chinese spy balloon that flew across the continental U.S. in February drew nationwide outrage. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s October visit to China, which included a meeting with Xi, was accompanied by fairly positive state media coverage, portending another potential crack in the frosty relationship.
But no new offers of pandas, or last-minute announcements of loan extensions, have preceded or accompanied the meetings.
The pandas were not just a popular attraction in Washington. At the peak, 13 pandas were scattered across four zoos — San Diego, Memphis, Atlanta and, most famously, Washington’s Smithsonian National Zoo. And the exodus is not just in the states: Pandas are also leaving the United Kingdom, which likewise slipped into a more combative relationship with China over the treatment of Hong Kong, a former British colony.
With the end of Washington’s loan program, Atlanta has become the last U.S. zoo to have pandas, but not for much longer. Atlanta’s pandas are set to return to China next year, and the zoo told POLITICO that it has not had any discussion with its Chinese partners to extend their presence.
The panda departure has nothing to do with an inability to take care of the animals — although critics in China at one point accused American zoos of mistreating some of their prized pandas. American zoos, as well as both governments, maintain that the breeding and lease programs have been successful, promoting conservation and intercultural goals.
“Many good results have been achieved on breeding, disease prevention and control, technical exchanges and public awareness,” said Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington. “This has played a positive role in protecting endangered species and enhancing the friendship between the Chinese and American peoples.”
And panda diplomacy continues — albeit with a different bent. New pandas were sent to Qatar ahead of last year’s FIFA World Cup, potentially signaling China’s interests in the Middle East.
“Zoos aren’t taking this personally,” said Dan Ashe, director of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and a former head of the Fish and Wildlife Service. “It’s not a repudiation of zoos or their ability to take care of pandas. It’s a reflection of the state of relations between the U.S. and China.”
The first panda loan agreement with the U.S. lasted for a decade and was renewed in 2010. In 2020, the Smithsonian National Zoo signed a three-year temporary extension to the agreement with Beijing. Perhaps cognizant of the panda exhibit’s ability to draw large crowds, the Washington zoo is making a $1.7 million renovation in hopes of hosting more of the bears in the future, according to a Bloomberg report.
Washington zoo director Brandie Smith, speaking at a press event on Wednesday morning as the pandas prepared to depart, expressed hope that they would one day come back.
“The future is bright for giant pandas,” Smith said. “We look forward to celebrating with all of you when pandas can return to D.C.”

Lissachatina fulica can carry at least 36 pathogen species, including two-thirds that can infect humans. The global invasion of L. fulica is climatically limited to tropical areas, but the species is strongly associated with densely populated areas where snails are more likely to enter in contact with humans. In temperate countries, however, climatic conditions should prevent L. fulica's spread. However, we show that in Europe, giant snails are popular exotic pets and are often handled with direct skin contact, likely increasing the risk of pathogen transmission to their owners.

Stitt made a video in support of the annual meeting for the Oklahoma Gamefowl Commission, a group that has been working to reduce penalties for cockfighting in the state.
“I wish I could be with you for the Gamefowl Commission’s annual legislative meeting, but I wanted to take a moment to cheer you on from the sidelines,” Stitt said in the video published on Sunday. “Oklahomans like yourselves remained dedicated to the spirit of competition and camaraderie that runs deep in our communities” he added.
The former district director for the Gamefowl Commission was arrested and charged with a felony in August after authorities busted a cockfighting ring in the state, KFOR reported.
The practice is outlawed in all 50 states, and a felony in 42 states as well as the District of Columbia, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The first law outlawing cockfighting was passed in 1867.

https://gdb.voanews.com/01000000-0aff-0242-17d3-08db2a232696_w1023_r1_s.jpg

Philippines' elephant Mali dies after decades alone
An elephant that was kept alone in a cage for more than four decades has died. Mali, a popular attraction at Manila Zoo, was at the center of a global campaign to relocate her.
https://static.dw.com/image/67581514_1004.webp
The pachyderm's plight attracted the attention of animal rights groups and a host of celebrities
Zoo officials in the Philippine (https://www.dw.com/en/philippines/t-17363433) capital, Manila, on Wednesday announced that an elephant that lived a solitary existence in a cage for several decades had died.
While Mali was a popular attraction at the city's zoo, she was also at the center of a global campaign to be relocated to join other members of her species. (https://www.dw.com/en/wildlife/t-19085136)
What the officials said
The animal's death was announced at a news conference by Manila City Mayor Honey Lacuna.
"Mali was our prized possession and was the star attraction here at the Manila Zoo," Lacuna said, recalling that her parents had taken her to the zoo to see the elephant. "It saddens me because she was part of our lives."
Zoo veterinarian Heinrich Domingo told reporters that an autopsy had found that Mali had pancreatic cancer and rejected accusations she had been neglected. "We were her family," he said.
What others said about Mali's treatment
Meanwhile, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) group condemned authorities for keeping Mali alone for so long, given that elephants (https://www.dw.com/en/thailand-takes-back-elephant-from-sri-lanka-over-abuse-claim/a-66093370) are known to be social creatures that live in herds in the wild.
"Because of indifference and greed, Mali the elephant died the same way she had lived for nearly 50 years: alone in a concrete pen at the Manila Zoo," PETA said in a statement.
"The Manila Zoo and the city of Manila sentenced Mali to decades of solitary confinement, which is torturous for female elephants, who naturally would spend their lives among their mothers and sisters, protecting one another and raising each other's calves," PETA said.
The group also accused the zoo and the Philippines government of ignoring Mali's "clearly painful foot problems."
Celebrities including prominent animal behavior expert Jane Goodall (https://www.dw.com/en/environmental-protection-the-biggest-problem-is-greed-says-conservationist-jane-goodall/a-49556942) and music legend Paul McCartney (https://www.dw.com/en/new-beatles-track-created-with-the-help-of-ai-paul-mccartney/a-65899993) had joined PETA's campaign to call for Mali to be moved to a sanctuary, where she could have enjoyed the company of other elephants.
Some social media users expressed sadness over Mali's death but also hit out at the zoo and city officials for her treatment.
"No more small enclosure for you. Run free Mali," said one Facebook user, with another commenting that "they killed her long before her physical death."
Mali was presented as a gift from Sri Lanka in 1977 to then Filipino first lady Imelda Marcos, the wife of dictator Ferdinand Marcos and mother of current President Bongbong Marcos.
The elephant was only three years old when she arrived in Manila.
A similar outcry surrounded the treatment of another elephant, Kaavan, who was moved from Islamabad zoo to a sanctuary in Cambodia in 2020 after a campaign spearheaded by the US singer Cher (https://www.dw.com/en/worlds-loneliest-elephant-kaavan-arrives-in-cambodia-greeted-by-cher/a-55763316).

Lucky spent a few hours inspecting police headquarters in Garbsen after being found far from home
Lucky, a 3-year-old female tabby cat that went missing a year ago, has been returned to her home in north-central Germany (https://www.dw.com/en/germany/t-17871182) after showing up in a village some 60 kilometers (37 miles) away on Tuesday night.
The cat's owner reported its disappearance from her home in the village of Wallensen outside Hanover in November 2022. Searches of the area by the 52-year-old and her children, however, were unsuccessful.
On Tuesday night, a 39-year-old woman in the village of Garbsen noticed the feline as it sat on her porch looking to come inside.
The woman quickly distributed a photo of the cat in a neighborhood group chat. One group member, a local police officer, stopped by while on patrol to scan the animal's chip implant.
Upon scanning the chip, the officer saw that the cat had been registered as missing.
Police then contacted TASSO e.V. (https://www.tasso.net/tierregister/suchmeldungen?pi=2030&snr=S2742737&lp=9), an animal protection organization that, among other things, maintains an active national registry of missing animals. TASSO, in turn, contacted the owner to give her the happy news.Garbsen Police Chief Christoph Ahlborn said the woman arrived at police headquarters late Tuesday night to pick up her much-missed pet.

Edinburgh zoo’s pandas to return to China
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/01/rock-star-of-an-animal-edinburgh-zoos-pandas-to-return-to-china
Greenwood, an events manager, 52, travelled from Cambridge on Wednesday to watch Tian Tian and her partner, Yang Guang, grazing on bamboo, sleeping and exercising.
The pandas’ residency in Edinburgh will come to an end very quietly in a few days. They will soon be flown home without fanfare, leaving behind a continuing dispute about the purpose of zoos and the ethics of China’s panda diplomacy.
Bob Elliot, director of the Scottish animal welfare charity OneKind, agreed. “Wild animals belong in the wild and zoological collections are a sad hangover from the 1960s,” he said. “The vast number are held in captivity for entertainment and financial gain. It’s time to concentrate efforts and resources on conserving habitats and the species surviving in them.
”The zoo spent roughly £13.7m on the pair. It paid China a $1m (£791,000) annual fee for first 10 years and $500,000 for the final two; £3m went on building an expansive new enclosure; there were medical costs, a constant diet of homegrown bamboo that cost £2.4m; at least £1.2m on keepers’ wages, and more on insurance.

As the plot thickened, police mounted surveillance cameras and last week found the suspect – a dog named Billy.
Billy, who lives close to where the cars were parked, was captured on camera biting into the tyres of several cars.
Vets said that Billy’s behaviour could be explained by a severe case of gingivitis, which made him gnaw at the tyres in order to relieve the pain.
Police are carrying out more checks before officially sanctioning Billy, whose owner will reportedly be responsible for compensating the car owners.

In total, cats eat 981 species of bird, 463 reptiles and 431 mammals – comprising about 90% of species consumed. They were also found to feed on 119 species of insects and 57 amphibians.
Their impact on wildlife has spurred fierce debate in New Zealand, where one politician is campaigning to eradicate them completely, and controversy has erupted over competitions encouraging children to shoot feral cats.

Local fishers scrambled to collect the fish, fearing their carcasses would lower the oxygen content of the water as they decompose and damage the marine environment.
Experts have speculated that the migratory fish in both areas had become stranded after being chased to the point of exhaustion by amberjack and other predatory fish. Mass mortality events can also occur when there are sudden drops in the water temperature, causing the fish to go into shock, they added.
Japanese government officials have blasted a report in the British newspaper the Daily Mail that appeared to link the phenomenon to the release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Soft-furred hedgehogs are small mammals that belong to the hedgehog family, which have a long, pointy snout, and are furry, rather than spiny. Scientists have likened their appearance to a mixture of a mouse and a shrew with a short tail.
They are active both during the day and night, and are believed to eat insects and other invertebrates as well as fruits.
One of the new species, which had particularly long fangs, was named H. macarong, after a Vietnamese word for vampire (Ma cà rồng). It has dark brown fur, is about 14cm long and is endemic to southern Vietnam.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/dec/24/monotreme-dreams-the-plan-to-reintroduce-platypuses-into-adelaides-once-noxious-river
The last sighting of a platypus in the Torrens was recorded little more than a decade later – it was declared extinct on the South Australian mainland in the 1970s.
John Burn wrote to the paper to say he endorsed their condemnation of “the filthy state of Adelaide – a city of stenches” because “it was so poor at managing its sewage”.
But over the past 20 years the Torrens, an 85km stretch from the hills to the sea, has been rehabilitated through waste management, better management of water flows, wetlands, revegetation and the reconstruction of creeks.
With the urban river “completely reformed”, Daniels says, conservationists wanted to know if they could bring back its “premier animal”, the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), which is also an “umbrella animal” that can improve the ecosystem for other natives.

Buildings kill a billion US birds a year
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/dec/27/birds-buildings-collisions-architecture
As many as 1 billion birds in the US die in building collisions each year. And Chicago, which sits along the Mississippi Flyway, one of the four major north-south migration routes, is among the riskiest places for birds. This year, at least 1,000 birds died in one day from colliding with a single glass-covered building.
In New York, which lies along the Atlantic Flyway, hundreds of species traverse the skyline and tens of thousands die each year.
While high-rise buildings and massive urban projects receive the most attention, homes and low-rise buildings account for most bird collision deaths.
“The huge challenge is that glass is everywhere.” said Christine Sheppard, who directs the glass collisions program at the American Bird Conservancy (ABC). “It’s hard to know what I know and not cringe when I look at it.”

The car-carrying ship Glovis Caravel arrived off Brisbane in late October and has capacity for 6,500 vehicles. Many of those it was carrying were reportedly Tesla Model Ys, though Kia has also confirmed about 1,000 of its vehicles were aboard. The ship has since returned to Shanghai, where the vehicles have been unloaded. The Electric Vehicle Council chief executive, Behyad Jafari, said the delayed shipment impacted Australia’s entire market.
“New Zealand had trouble with these pests all last year and it was only a matter of time before Australia did too,” he said.
“Ships have been turned around for quarantine reasons before but it’s a shame that it happened to be when there was a stack of EVs on board that people had been waiting for.” The organisation estimates invasive alien species in Australia cost about $25bn each year in agricultural losses and pest management.
The bug detected in the cargo ship is common to Asia and could pose a risk to fruit crops if imported into Australia, including pears, peaches, apples and kiwifruit. University of South Australia associate professor Patrick O’Connor said the detection will ultimately benefit the entire community. “For something like turning around a ship or delaying access to EVs, there’s a private cost,” he said. “But otherwise [the price] could be billions of dollars borne by many individuals over generations and have significant consequences that you can’t foresee.”

The swab test results will be inserted into a database, which police can then refer to in their search for the culprits and their owners. The evidence will be used to fine owners between €292 and €1,048 (£250 and £900).
The law required the estimated 45,000 dogs in the province, located in the mountainous Trentino-Alto Adige region, to undergo a DNA test at a veterinary clinic by the end of December 2023 before the initiative is introduced this month. But only 5,000 have complied, according to reports in the Italian press.
The measure has been contentious, especially among the dog owners who diligently clean up their pet’s poop and who are now obliged to pay €65 for the test.

A Thai woman has been charged with illegal possession of a lion cub, police said on Friday, after a video of the animal cruising in a Bentley went viral online.
The police ordered an investigation after a video showing a lion cub riding around the raucous Thai resort town of Pattaya in a Bentley gained more than 2.6m views online.
Sawangjit told police she bought the lion from another woman for 250,000 baht but failed to acquire an official handover document owing to insufficient information regarding the lion’s sex.
She kept the cub in a house rented by a Sri Lankan man who was seen driving the Bentley in the video. He has been deported to Sri Lanka, the national parks and wildlife department said.

Nearby, a woman named Stefanie played fetch with her pit bull Bebe, who was off-leash on a soccer turf where dogs are not allowed to play. “Dog owners are a specific category of annoying person,” she said.

More than 500 experts from research, veterinary and conservation groups have called on Emmanuel Macron, the French president, to “end the overexploitation of frogs” and afford the most traded species better protections.
The EU imports the equivalent of 80-200 million frogs each year, the majority of which are consumed in France. Most come from wild populations in Indonesia, Turkey and Albania, as well as from farms in Vietnam.
More frogs’ legs are eaten in France – often fried in batter or sautéed with garlic and parsley – than in any other country in the EU.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/mar/13/injuries-from-animals-are-on-the-rise-after-surge-in-pet-dog-cat-ownership-australia
A new report released on Wednesday by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare links the rising number of animal-related hospitalisations to increased pet ownership since the pandemic.
The report found a 10% increase in hospitalisations from 2019-20 to 2020-21, which the authors noted corresponded with the increase in pet ownership throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a national survey carried out by Animal Medicines Australia.
The most common injuries were open wounds and fractures, while the commonest body parts injured (nearly half) were upper limbs including wrists and hands, the report found.
It found dogs were the most common animal leading to hospitalisations, with 40% of all injuries from contact with animals due to being bitten or struck by a dog.

California mountain lion attacks
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/mar/24/mountain-lion-attack-california
Statistics from California’s fish and wildlife department document only 22 mountain lion-on-human attacks in the state since 1986. Four of those cases involved mountain lions killing people, according to the stats, which were last updated in May 2022.
The most recent of those attacks was in 2004 in Orange county. In that instance, a mountain lion killed the competitive cyclist Mark Jeffrey Reynolds in Whiting Ranch wilderness park, the San Francisco Chroniclereported. The same mountain lion which killed Reynolds was suspected of injuring a second cyclist hours later before deputies shot the animal to death.
Meanwhile, CBS News’ affiliate in Sacramento reported that the last time a mountain lion killed a person in El Dorado county before Saturday was in 1994.
Mountain lions, also known as cougars, vary in size. But, typically, they can be about 30in (76cm) in height at the shoulder, 8ft (2.4 meters) in length, and 175lb (79kg) in weight.

missing dog found 2,000 miles from California

Nearly nine months after his disappearance, a dog that had gone missing in California was discovered more than 2,000 miles away in Michigan.
A resident in Harper Woods, a Detroit suburb, contacted police in late March to report a stray dog in her neighborhood. Police collected the terrier mix, named Mishka, and brought her to an animal welfare group.
Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society said it quickly discovered that the dog had an identity chip implanted in her with information about her owner.
Mehrad and Liz Houman live in San Diego but were traveling to Minneapolis to see relatives when the phone rang. Once the family landed in Minnesota, Mehrad drove 10 hours to Michigan to see Mishka, the adoption group said in a Facebook post with pictures and video documenting the reunion.

Fossil of ‘largest snake to have ever existed’ found in western India
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/18/fossils-largest-snake-found-western-india
Fossil vertebrae unearthed in a mine in western India are the remains of one of the largest snakes that ever lived, a monster estimated at up to 15 metres in length – longer than a T rex.
Scientists have recovered 27 vertebrae from the snake, including a few still in the same position as they would have been when the reptile was alive. They said the snake, which they named Vasuki indicus, would have looked like a large python and would not have been venomous.
Vasuki, named after the snake king associated with the Hindu deity Shiva, rivals in size another huge prehistoric snake called Titanoboa, whose fossils were discovered in a coalmine in northern Colombia in 2009. Titanoboa, estimated at 13 metres long and more than 1 tonne, lived between 58m and 60m years ago.

Incredibly, Noem’s tale of slaughter is not finished.
Noem decided to kill the unnamed goat the same way she had just killed Cricket the dog. But though she “dragged him to a gravel pit”, the goat jumped as she shot and therefore survived the wound. Noem says she went back to her truck, retrieved another shell, then “hurried back to the gravel pit and put him down”.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/may/07/you-wouldnt-eat-her-shes-one-of-the-family-meet-jill-australias-heaviest-oyster
Now almost 10 years old, Jill – an oyster that caught his eye nine years ago – weighs 3.01kg. That makes Jill Australia’s – and potentially the world’s – heaviest oyster, after it beat Big Boppa, at 2.44kg, and Keithy, 2.4kg, to win the title at Australia’s biggest oyster competition at the Narooma oyster festival on the New South Wales south coast on Saturday.
Connell bought Jill from a hatchery in Tasmania when the juvenile was the size of a match head. After relocating the baby oysters to his farm on the Clyde, he usually sells them when they are 10 months old, but occasionally finds a mollusc that is too promising to let go.
But the secret to Jill’s size, says Connell, is the purity of the Clyde’s water and the health of its algae. Pacific oysters eat 18 kinds of algae, feeding “all the time”, while the smaller native Sydney rock oysters feed on just three algae.

Riccardo Gullo came up with the novel idea after a census estimated the number of feral goats on Alicudi, the smallest of Sicily’s Aeolian archipelago, was six times the island’s year-round human population of 100.
But as news of his “adopt a goat” initiative spread beyond Alicudi, he received a flurry of offers from around the world – not just from Europe, but also the US, and even from an animal-lover in Nigeria.
Alicudi’s goat dilemma began two decades ago, when a small number of the animals were brought to the island by farmers. But when the focus of the island’s economy shifted to tourism, the farmers left the goats to their own devices.

Elephants call each other by name, study finds

The research “not only shows that elephants use specific vocalisations for each individual, but that they recognise and react to a call addressed to them while ignoring those addressed to others”, the lead study author, Michael Pardo, said.
The researchers sifted through elephant “rumbles” recorded at Kenya’s Samburu national reserve and Amboseli national park between 1986 and 2022.
Using a machine-learning algorithm, they identified 469 distinct calls, which included 101 elephants issuing a call and 117 receiving one.
Elephant make a wide range of sounds, from loud trumpeting to rumbles so low they cannot be heard by the human ear.
Names were not always used in the elephant calls. But when names were called out, it was often over a long distance, and when adults were addressing young elephants.

The Iowa great dane that was recently crowned the world’s tallest dog is the same height as the average three-year-old child – and is often mistaken for being a horse.
Kevin measures 3ft 2in (0.97 metres) from his feet to his withers, or the ridge between the shoulder blades. That’s not only about the same size as many toddlers – it’s eight inches taller than the average male great dane.
The pooch secured the title of world’s tallest living male dog in March after the record was vacated by the death six months earlier of fellow American great dane Zeus, Guinness said. The three-year-old Zeus had been 3ft 5.18in (1.046 metres) tall.
Kevin also eats up to 10 cups of food daily. It’s an amount his family marvels at because he’s managed to stay svelte despite spending much of the rest of his time either napping as well as stealing whatever additional food he can off kitchen counters – which he can reach without even needing to raise his snout, much less get on his hind legs.

A NZ$500 cash prize is awarded to the hunter with the largest number of cats killed, while the largest cat caught is awarded $1,000. Just over 1,500 people took part in the North Canterbury event this year, with roughly 440 of those under 14 years old.
New Zealand has one of the world’s highest rates for cat ownership per capita, with close to half of households owning one.
Animal rights activists have condemned the competition, arguing it is cruel to animals, desensitises children to violence and puts domestic cats at risk.
Animal Save Movement protesters attended the event, where they said they were quickly approached by young people dressed in animal costumes with the words ‘Animal Slay Movement’ printed on them.
The group criticised the event’s attempt to justify violence towards animals by claiming it was conservation.

Food scientists from the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, Poland, have managed to make a batch of equine gelato that scores well on consistency and appearance. They say it has a number of potential health benefits, including containing half the fat of ice-cream made with cow’s milk.
Their study also found it was high in phospholipids, which can help tackle stomach complaints; certain fatty acids that ease breathing problems; and lactoferrin, which boosts the immune system.
Kitty Travers, an ice-cream maker who has been praised as the “ice-cream queen”, was happy to give it a go. She said she would need 10 pints of mare’s milk delivered to her “ice-cream shed” – a converted greengrocer in south London.
The lightness did make a refreshing contrast to some traditional ice-cream, which can be a bit stodgy. And for all the potential health benefits of the main ingredient, it did not taste piously wholesome. If anything, it was too sugary, the sweetness too cloying.

The eagle was released, completely healthy and full of energy, after a short period of “rehabilitation” at the zoo’s wildlife hospital.

Nicci Knight, from Newby, North Yorkshire, was on holiday in Turkey when she was told by neighbours that Ted had drowned in their pond, the BBC reported. Knight arranged for Heavenly Pets Crematorium to collect the body and cremate it.
Four days after the cremation, Knight – still in Turkey – saw she had several missed calls from her cat sitter. “I was in the pool again, having a lovely time, having, you know, put it [Ted’s death] behind us,” she told the broadcaster.
The cat sitter told Knight that Ted had just walked through the catflap. “I didn’t believe it at first,” Knight said. “I had to get her to FaceTime me live so that I could see that Ted was actually alive.”
Knight soon realised she had paid £130 to cremate someone else’s cat. When she later went to collect the ashes, she saw the urn had been labelled “Not Dead Ted”.
Vicki Crallan, the director of Heavenly Pets Crematorium, told the BBC it was “bittersweet” and she was worried there was a family out there “missing somebody”.

Zimbabwe’s environment minister, Sithembiso Nyoni, told Voice of America: “We are having a discussion with ZimParks and some communities to do like what Namibia has done, so that we can cull the elephants and mobilise the women to maybe dry the meat, package it, and ensure that it gets to some communities that need the protein.”
Neighbouring Namibia said this month that it had already killed 160 wildlife animals in a planned cull of more than 700, including 83 elephants, to cope with its worst drought in decades.

Koala’s surprise visit to Victoria supermarket
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/sep/17/koala-found-iga-supermarket-meeinyan-victoria
A confused koala has surprised staff and customers at a regional IGA supermarket after he wandered through the store’s front doors and made his way through the aisles.
The marsupial, which staff said was a teenage male, spent 20 minutes wandering the store. Images from the IGA showed himclimbing the newspaper stand, exploring the herb selection and reaching for soft toys on display.
One customer called a local wildlife carer, who stayed on the phone for the koala’s entire visit, providing advice. Staff were eventually able to lure him on to a step ladder, which they used to safely transport him back outside, away from the road.

A stowaway rodent caused a passenger jet flight from Oslo to Malaga to be diverted yesterday.
The SAS Scandinavian Airlines flight was anything but routine, as stunned passengers reportedly witnessed a mouse jump out from a food tray that had just been served by a flight attendant and scurry off down the plane's cabin.
Travel website Paddle Your Own Kanoo reported that the captain soon alerted passengers the flight with 180 passengers onboard would have to be diverted to Copenhagen so the plane could be inspected.
Local news station NRK confirmed a mouse had been spotted onboard flight SK4683 with an SAS Scandinavian Airlines spokesperson.
They reportedly explained how it was "normal procedure" to land a plane immediately so it could be inspected.
Passengers were later put on a replacement flight and made it to their destination without their stowaway.

A zoo in Finland will return two giant pandas to China eight years early, saying it can no longer afford to look after them.
Lumi and Pyry were brought to Finland in 2018, after the two countries signed an agreement to protect the animals.
They were meant to stay in the Nordic country for 15 years, but will be sent home in November – with Ähtäri Zoo blaming inflation and debt linked to the Covid pandemic for the pandas' eviction.
It also said the zoo spent €1.5m (£1.2m) a year on the pandas' upkeep, as well as more than €8m on their enclosure.

US man sentenced to six months for creating giant hybrid sheep
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/oct/01/sheep-cloning-montana-hunting-prison
Sarah Brown, an attorney with the US Department of Justice, had asked that Schubarth be sentenced to prison, saying his illegal breeding operation was widespread, involved other states and endangered the health of other wildlife.
Schubarth owns Sun River Enterprises LLC, a 215-acre (87-hectare) alternative livestock ranch, which buys, sells and breeds “alternative livestock” such as mountain sheep, mountain goats and ungulates, primarily for private hunting preserves, where people shoot captive trophy game animals for a fee, prosecutors said.
Schubarth pleaded guilty in March to charges that he and five other people conspired to use tissue from a Marco Polo sheep illegally brought into the US to clone that animal and then use the clone and its descendants to create a larger, hybrid species of sheep that would be more valuable for captive hunting operations.
Marco Polo sheep are the largest in the world, can weigh 300lb (136kg) and have curled horns up to 5ft (1.5 meters) long, court records said.

Forty-seven tigers, three lions and a panther have died in zoos in south Vietnam due to the H5N1 bird flu virus, state media reported.
The deaths occurred in August and September at the private My Quynh safari park in Long An province and the Vuon Xoai zoo in Dong Nai, near the capital Ho Chi Minh City, the official Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported on Wednesday.
Education for Nature Vietnam, an NGO that focuses on wildlife conservation, said there were a total of 385 tigers living in captivity in Vietnam at the end of 2023.
About 310 are kept at 16 privately owned farms and zoos, while the rest are in state-owned facilities.

Black bear with three cubs breaking into Colorado home
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/oct/06/black-bear-attacks-man-colorado-home
Residents of the home were startled by a loud crash at about 8.30pm Thursday night and saw the bears coming in through the sliding door which had been left ajar.
The bear charged and swiped at the man, injured the man’s head, neck, arms, shoulder, abdomen and calf before he and the other residents escaped to a bedroom and locked themselves in.
State wildlife managers found the four bears in trees near the man’s house and killed them, a standard practice to stop problem bears that associate people with food.
Daly recommends not attacking a bear once a person is face-to-face with it. Instead, he said people should slowly turn and back away from any wildlife they might confront. He also stressed that black bears are not dangerous, and it’s rare for a bear to attack someone.

The marsupial was caught on video crawling beneath a fence on to a platform at Casula train station, in the city’s south-west, shortly after 4am on Friday.
South-west Sydney is home to a large koala population, but they face mounting threats from urban development.
Vehicle strikes have increased in the region in recent years as new roads increasingly divide their natural habitat and force the animals into harm’s way.
The NSW government has invested $600,000 into the region as part of its koala strategy, appointing a dedicated koala officer, restoring habitats and tracking the animals to avoid vehicular deaths.

Peanut the Instagram-famous squirrel is seized by New York officials
Wild squirrel that was taken in by Mark Longo seven years ago was confiscated after conservation officials received reports of ‘potentially unsafe housing of wildlife’

A New York man who turned a rescued squirrel into a social media star called Peanut is pleading with state authorities to return his beloved pet after they seized it during a raid that also yielded a raccoon named Fred.
Multiple anonymous complaints about Peanut – also spelled P’Nut or PNUT – brought at least six officers from the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to Mark Longo’s home on Wednesday, Longo said.
“The DEC came to my house and raided my house without a search warrant to find a squirrel!” said Longo, from Pine City. “I was treated as if I was a drug dealer and they were going for drugs and guns.”
The officers left with Peanut, who has amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram, TikTok and other platforms during his seven years with Longo. They also took Fred, a more recent addition to the family.
By Thursday night, Longo had gathered nearly 20,000 signatures urging the return of Peanut, and says he has hired a legal team to get Peanut back.
A spokesperson for the DEC said in a statement that the agency had started an investigation after receiving “multiple reports from the public about the potentially unsafe housing of wildlife that could carry rabies and the illegal keeping of wildlife as pets.”
Longo, who runs an animal refuge inspired by his squirrel buddy called P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, took to Instagram to mourn Peanut’s loss and said he fears that Peanut has been euthanised. “I don’t know if Peanut is alive,” he said in a phone interview on Thursday. “I don’t know where he is.”
The DEC spokesperson did not respond to a question about whether Peanut had been euthanised.
Longo said he took in Peanut seven years ago after seeing Peanut’s mother get hit by a car in New York City. Longo brought Peanut home and cared for him for eight months before trying to release the squirrel. “A day and a half later I found him sitting on my porch missing half of his tail with his bone sticking out,” Longo said.
Longo decided that Peanut lacked the survival skills to live in the wild and would remain an indoor squirrel.
Internet fame followed, after Longo posted videos of Peanut playing with his cat.
An Instagram account dedicated to Peanut shows the animal leaping on to Longo’s shoulder, wearing a miniature cowboy hat, and eating a waffle while wearing crocheted bunny ears.
Over the years Peanut’s story has been featured on TV and newspapers including USA Today.
Longo, who works as a mechanical engineer, was living in Norwalk, Connecticut, until he decided to move to upstate New York last year to start an animal sanctuary. P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary opened in April 2023 and now houses about 300 animals including horses, goats and alpacas, said Longo, who runs the sanctuary with his wife, Daniela, and other family members.
Longo is aware that it’s against New York state law to own a wild animal without a licence. He said he was in the process of filing paperwork to get Peanut certified as an educational animal.
“If we’re not following the rules, guide us in the right direction to follow the rules, you know?” Longo said. “Let us know what we need to do to have Peanut in the house and not have to worry about him getting taken.”
As for Fred, Longo said he had had the raccoon for only a few months and was hoping to rehabilitate the injured creature and release him back into the woods.
Longo is not the first animal owner to protest against the confiscation of a pet by New York authorities. A Buffalo-area man whose alligator was seized by the DEC in March is suing the agency to get the 750lb (340kg) reptile back.

Cassius, a Guinness World Record holder thought to be at least 110 years old, died at Marineland Melanesia on Green Island, just off Cairns, where he lived since 1987.
The exact cause of his death is unknown but could likely be attributed to old age. Cassius died mere weeks after his decades-long best mate and the owner of Marineland Melanesia, George Craig, left the island and moved into aged care on the mainland.
The rings on a sample of Cassius’ femur bone will be counted to try to determine his age, similar to that of tree rings. A sample has also been taken from each major organ, and his skin and head have been preserved.
The world’s oldest known crocodile, named Henry, resides at the Crocworld Conservation Center in South Africa and is set to turn 124 this December.

The businessman, who is well known in the town, reported the incident to police and told them he had previously received threats and warnings. Police think he may have been targeted for allegedly refusing to pay protection money or comply with other mafia demands.
The scene echoes the moment in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 film when a producer wakes to find the severed head of his thoroughbred horse in his bed.
Delivering severed animal heads or dismembered animal bodies is among the most common intimidation tactics employed by the mafia in Sicily, predating the Godfather.
According to investigators, the tactic serves the dual purpose of terrorising its victims and striking at their most cherished bonds: animals to which they are often deeply attached.
Last May, the head of a goat was found in front of the home of a construction entrepreneur in Palermo and in 2023, a pig’s head was hung at the gate of a police station in the province of Messina.

‘huge fraud’ in global supply honey chain
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/nov/30/beekeepers-halt-honey-awards
The World Beekeeping Awards will not award a prize for honey next year after warnings of widespread fraud in the global supply chain.
The decision came as beekeepers and importers face a mounting crisis over the scale of fraud, with warnings that genuine products are bulked out with cheaper sugar syrup. Some common tests to detect fraud can easily be defeated, and beekeepers say there has been a failure by food watchdogs and the industry to combat the fraudsters.
About 45% of honeys were rejected at the awards in Montreal in 2019 for a variety of reasons, including suspected adulteration. At the Istanbul congress in 2022, 39 out of 145 honeys were withdrawn for suspected adulteration.
Bernhard Heuvel, president of the European Professional Beekeepers Association, said there was overwhelming evidence of fraud in the supply chain. “It’s just unbelievable if the world organisation for all beekeepers cannot guarantee the authenticity of honey. The scale of this fraud is huge.”

New Zealand plans to ban greyhound racing over animal welfare concerns
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/10/new-zealand-greyhound-racing-ban-plan-winston-peters-ntwnfb
New Zealand will ban greyhound racing from 2026 due to “unacceptably high” rates of injuries and deaths among the dogs, the government has announced.
Greyhound racing has existed in New Zealand since the late 19th century, but the industry has faced growing public criticism over its treatment of racing dogs in recent years. Multiple independent reports have found a high number of healthy dogs had been euthanised by their trainers or suffered serious injuries on the track, and in 2021, the then Labour government put the industry on notice to either make improvements or face closure.
New Zealand is one of a handful of countries where commercial greyhound racing is still permitted, including Australia, Ireland, the US and the UK. There are seven greyhound race clubs and six tracks in New Zealand, and there were approximately 4,800 races in the 2023/24 year.

A hunting group was following the bear when it ran up the tree, the department said. As the group retreated from the tree, a hunter shot the bear. The animal fell on to another hunter who was standing about 10ft (3 metres) from the bottom of the tree.
The department identified the man as Lester C Harvey, 58, of Phenix, Virginia. A member of the group rendered first aid before Harvey was rushed to two different hospitals. He died from his injuries on Friday, the wildlife department stated.
Similar incidents have occurred in recent years.
In 2018, a man in Alaska was critically injured after his hunting partner shot a bear on a ridge. The animal tumbled down a slope into the man, who was also struck by rocks dislodged by the bear.
Another man was injured in 2019 after his hunting partner shot a bear in a tree in North Carolina. The bear fell out of the tree and began biting the hunter. The man and the animal then tumbled off a cliff. The hunter was taken to a hospital, while the bear was later found dead.

Men die from pneumonia after using bat poop to grow marijuana
Researchers are warning people about the use of bat poop as fertilizer, which can carry a harmful fungus
Two men from upstate New York have died from a type of pneumonia after using bat poop to grow cannabis.
The men, who were based in Rochester, developed fatal cases of histoplasmosis: a lung infection that is caused by breathing in spores of the harmful Histoplasma fungus.
The pair, who were not named, had been using the droppings to fertilize cannabis plants. It was not immediately clear when they died.
“Exposure to bat guano among cannabis growers appears to be a recent trend that can lead to histoplasmosis cases and outbreaks,” University of Rochester researchers said in a recent report. Bat poop is also known as guano.
The findings were published in the journal Open Forum Infectious Diseases.

Squirrels spotted hunting and eating rodents in ‘shocking’ discovery
New study suggest squirrels could be opportunistic omnivores
https://static.independent.co.uk/2024/12/19/03/carnivorous-squirrels.jpg?quality=75&width=1368&auto=webp
Scientists have for the first time ever found “shocking” evidence of carnivorous behaviour in squirrels — hunting and eating voles in California.
Ground squirrels are often seen stuffing their cheeks with nuts, seeds or grains, indicating that they are a granivorous species.
But the latest discovery, published in the Journal of Ethology, suggests squirrels may be opportunistic omnivores with a more flexible diet than assumed.
In the study, scientists from the University of California Davis assessed 74 interactions of squirrels with voles from June and July 2024.
They found that more than 42 per cent of the interactions involved active hunting of the small rodents by ground squirrels.

California house cats die from bird flu as three more appear to be infected
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/19/california-cat-bird-flu-death
The Los Angeles county department of public health confirmed two fatal cases of H5 bird flu in cats on Wednesday. The two felines had consumed raw milk linked to Raw Farm, a dairy in Fresno, California, that was subject to a recall of raw milk and cream products last month.
The two cats initially showed a lack of appetite, fever and neurologic signs. As their symptoms worsened, they tested positive for influenza A, a rare result in cats, that was later confirmed as H5 bird flu.
The three cats who may also now be infected with bird flu all lived in the same household, according to authorities. Humans who came into contact with the animals are now being monitored for symptoms. Cats are considered highly susceptible to bird flu.

the giant crocodile from Crocodile Dundee dies aged 90
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/dec/23/burt-the-giant-crocodile-from-crocodile-dundee-dies-aged-90
Burt, a saltwater crocodile, was reported to be 5.1m (16ft 8in) in length and 700kg (110st) in weight and had been at Crocosaurus Cove since 2008.
Named after movie star Burt Reynolds, he was captured from the Reynolds River in 1980 and subsequently found by film-makers at a crocodile farm, according to Crocosaurus Cove chief executive Penny Priest.
In Crocodile Dundee, Burt features in a scene where American reporter Sue Charlton (played by Linda Kozlowski) is rescued by Mick Dundee (Paul Hogan) from a crocodile attack. While much of the sequence was shot using models, Priest said: “The scene … was actually filmed using the motions of Burt and him launching out of the water.”
Burt was also used as the model for visual effects for the 2007 killer-croc film Rogue, and in 2018 became Australia’s answer to Paul the octopus, correctly predicting the result of the World Cup final by opting to bite a French flag than a Croatian one with chicken pieces attached.

animal divorce?
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/dec/30/consciously-uncoupling-what-drives-the-rates-of-animal-divorce
But after genetic testing techniques were developed, scientists began to realise that birds were not as faithful as previously believed – that social and sexual monogamy don’t necessarily go hand in hand. Mulder’s work on the superb fairywren found that 76% of chicks born in nests were fathered by other males. That astonishing rate of cuckoldry is bested only by the Australian magpie at a rate as high as 82%.
Short-lived species, in contrast, might be more ready to ditch their partner to maximise breeding opportunities. Even so, Sun’s research estimates that the divorce rate in wandering albatrosses is about 10%. (Compare this to the king penguin, which, though sexually monogamous while with a partner, divorces at a rate of about 80%.)
Other factors that might drive animals to divorce – what scientists call mate switching – include a high mortality rate and a skewed sex ratio. Both drive up competition for mates, creating temptation for those of the minority sex to shack up with someone more appealing.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/jan/02/chunky-european-snails-may-be-coming-to-australia-with-their-crazy-sexual-practices-but-all-in-good-time
In 2019 the Australian government began a risk analysis on bringing European molluscs into the country for breeding and, eventually, eating.
Now farmers hope that early next year they will finally learn whether importing live garden snails – Cornu aspersum – will be permitted.
C aspersum is the common garden snail found all over Australia, probably brought here on boats more than a century ago. The farmers want to bring over the bigger European version to start breeding programs here.
They would then provide snail meat (the escargot) and snail eggs (caviar) to restaurants.

Texas teenager accused of poisoning rival’s goat
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/dec/30/texas-teenager-poisons-goat-pesticide-competition
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by multiple outlets, Vanlandingham reportedly confessed to deliberately poisoning the animal, an act that was captured on CCTV footage.
The goat died about 21 hours later after convulsing and showing signs of respiratory distress, documents say.
Vanlandingham confessed to police that she deliberately poisoned the goat because she believed the animal’s owner was “a cheater”, according to the affidavit. She reportedly said it was her second attempt to kill the goat.
Investigators who searched her phone history found that she had searched “how much bleach can kill an animal” and “poisoning pets, what you should know”, People reported. She also allegedly searched “how to clear search history”.
Vanlandingham faces up to two years in prison if convicted of cruelty to livestock animals.

Brigitte Bardot joins campaign to save wild boar
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/05/i-demand-she-is-spared-brigitte-bardot-joins-campaign-to-save-wild-boar
Élodie Cappé, who runs a riding stables at Chaource, found Rillette, an apparently orphaned piglet, rooting through rubbish near dustbins at her farm in April 2023. She contacted the local authority to report the animal but after she failed to find a sanctuary or park willing to take Rillette off her hands, she built the boar a 1.2 sq km enclosure. Cappé says that, with the nearest neighbours 3km away, the animal is no threat to anyone and has become part of the family (https://farmingdale-observer.com/2024/12/18/shes-part-of-our-family-now-rillette-a-french-domesticated-boar-is-threatened-with-euthanasia-by-authorities-her-owner-launches-a-petition/).
A threat by the local authorities in the Aube, eastern France, to put down the female boar has spread into an international campaign (https://france3-regions.francetvinfo.fr/grand-est/aube/quels-sont-les-monstres-qui-demandent-son-euthanasie-le-sos-de-brigitte-bardot-pour-sauver-le-sanglier-menace-de-mort-3077686.html) to save Rillette supported by animal activist and former actor Brigitte Bardot.
Even critics of the campaign admit the buzz has been impressive, with one French YouTuber called Monsieur Seby (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDXTVfxjleX32SWTYg0oqZA) (903,000 subscribers), writing a song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9ePwMQ1FkQ) to save the sanglier (boar).
A petition (https://www.change.org/p/sauvez-notre-laie-sanglier-de-chaouce-mascotte-en-danger) to save Rillette has already been signed by more than 170,000 people across the world. Now locals near Cappé’s farm are planning a silent march next weekend.
In December, Bardot joined the scrap, writing an open letter. “Help! I demand that Rillette be spared. What monsters are demanding she be put down … this little animal has the right to live, indeed it is a duty. She is innocent. We are governed by assassins,” the 60s star wrote.

Male mosquitoes to genetically poison females in Australian research
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/07/male-mosquito-semen-poison-females-australian-research
“Ideally, what we’re trying to achieve is: a male mosquito mates with a female and then she dies immediately,” he said.
Injecting a new gene into freshly laid mosquito eggs using tiny glass needles was “a very tedious process”, he added.
The method involves genetically engineering males to produce spider and sea anemone venom proteins, which they inject into females during mating, reducing their lifespan.
Weinstein said an ideal solution would be to control the insects without eradicating them, given that mosquitoes were pollinators and an important food source for fish and bats.

Adopted wild boar Rillette can stay with her owner
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/jan/16/adopted-wild-boar-rillette-can-stay-with-her-owner-french-court-rules
In a ruling published on Thursday, the Châlons-en-Champagne administrative tribunal ordered the prefecture to reconsider the application to keep the animal and ordered the state to pay Cappe €1,500 in damages.
Found as a tiny piglet near rubbish bins outside a horse farm in Chaource, central France, in April 2023, Rillette has grown into a large sow who runs around with the horses and dogs on the farm.
After early attempts to release her back into the wild failed, farmer Elodie Cappe had Rillette sterilised and vaccinated, provided her with an enclosure and put in several requests with the regional prefecture for authorisation to keep a non-domesticated animal.
The requests were all rejected while local authorities threatened to confiscate or euthanise the animal. Cappe faced potential prison time and a fine of up to €150,000 (£126,000) for “capturing or detaining wild animals”.

US egg prices to climb further
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/feb/02/egg-prices-bird-flu
Though the avian flu has been in the US since 2022, the largest outbreak started in October and is still affecting millions of hens. About 14.7 million egg-producing chickens have been affected by the avian flu since the start of January, surpassing the number of hens affected in all of 2023, according to data (https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/avian-influenza/hpai-detections/commercial-backyard-flocks) from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The wholesale price (https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/ams_3725.pdf) of a dozen large eggs has been climbing as much as 40 cents a week as farmers struggle to produce enough eggs to keep up with demand. As of 24 January, the wholesale price of a dozen large eggs was $7.24 in New York, $6.84 in the midwest and $8.35 in California.
Though average wholesale prices in mid-January were around $5.80, the average price (https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/APU0000708111) of eggs in stores was just above $4 – up from around $2.50 a year ago.
Still, people are starting to see prices increase in some stores. Videos on social media show people shocked at seeing $15 cartons of eggs. “I’m going to have to start reselling,” one TikTok user jokes in a video (https://www.tiktok.com/@.chrisdolo/video/7465079130783026462?q=eggs&t=1738259932622).

Cory Kerewaro, owner of Reptile Relocation Sydney, dispatched his catcher, Dylan Cooper, to the site where he found five adults, four of which were “gravid” – carrying eggs internally.
With the help of Stein’s son, the trio eventually found around 40 snakes, only for four of the adults to give birth during the relocation process.
On final count, there were five adult females and 97 babies. He said the final tally would climb from 102 because one female was yet to give birth.

Eyestalk ablation involves the removal, typically by a blade and then crushing, of one or both of a mother prawn’s eyes to stimulate egg production.
When slaughtered, prawns are supposed to die from thermal shock in a mixture of ice and water, but campaigners say the method is often ineffective and prawns can have a prolonged death from asphyxiation.
The International Council for Animal Welfare (ICAW) said it wants all retailers to commit to humane slaughter and end ablation.
The global shrimp market, which includes prawns and shrimp, is worth more than £30bn a year and has been boosted by increased demand for low-fat, protein-rich foods. The biggest exporters of prawns to the UK are Vietnam, India and Ecuador.

The nutria, a large, semi-aquatic rodent native to South America, is threatening the state’s ecosystems by destroying habitats and outcompeting native wildlife. The nutria’s harmful impacts have prompted wildlife officials to promote hunting and consumption as possible solutions.
Federal wildlife officials are trying to make the consumption of nutrias somewhat enticing by drawing similarities to the taste of rabbit or dark turkey meat. Resources, including recipes for nutria dishes such as stews and chilli, are available on Nutria.com.
“Eating invasive species can help protect native wildlife by reducing their numbers and limiting the damage they cause to ecosystems,” reads a statement released in late February by Erin Huggins, a spokesperson for the Fish and Wildlife Service.
According to the California department of fish and wildlife (CDFW), nutria were originally introduced to the US for the fur trade but have since established themselves in as many as 18 states. The rodents can grow up to 40in (102cm), which is nearly as large as a beaver or a small dog.

Tennessee man shot by his dog
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/12/tennessee-man-shot-by-dog
Dog bites man is hardly news, but in Tennessee, a dog recently shot a man, according to authorities.
In what is only the latest instance of a kind of accidental shooting that intermittently occurs in the US, Jerald Kirkwood reported to police in Memphis that he and a woman were lying in bed with a firearm when his dog jumped up and inadvertently caused the weapon to discharge.
A bullet grazed the man atop his left thigh, according to the local news station WREG, which cited police. WREG recounted how Kirkwood’s one-year-old pit bull, Oreo, had gotten his paw stuck in the trigger guard of his owner’s gun. Oreo ultimately squeezed the trigger and shot his owner, whom the station and multiple other news outlets identified.
Kirkwood is not the only person to have been shot by a pet.
Richard Remme of Fort Dodge, Iowa, reported in 2018 being shot in one of his legs with a gun that he had tucked into his waistband while roughhousing with his pit bull-labrador mix, Balew.
And in 2019, former Louisiana State University football player Matt Branch publicly discussed how his black labrador retriever stepped on a hunting shotgun that had been placed in the back of a utility terrain vehicle on a hunting trip in Mississippi.
The shotgun fired, striking Branch in one of his legs. Branch’s leg was subsequently amputated. He spent 12 days unconscious but survived the ordeal.

Thousands of dead fish have washed ashore along the Richmond River at Ballina in northern New South Wales, after flooding in the region from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, according to fish habitat charity OzFish.
The group said it has received “numerous” reports from members of the public of the fish kill, including photographs and messages showing “fish gasping for air, or washing up dead”.
Significant flooding that hit the northern rivers region before and after Cyclone Alfred crossed the coastline appears to have contributed to a “blackwater” event – where organic material is washed into waterways. As the material decomposes it removes oxygen from the water, causing fish and other aquatic life to suffocate.

Fossil fish so exquisitely preserved that scientists have been able to reconstruct their final days from up to 16m years ago have been discovered in central New South Wales.
Several fossils of small freshwater fish, embedded in an iron-rich mineral called goethite at the McGraths Flat fossil site, have retained microscopic structural features including their stomach contents and the outlines of cells that determine colour.
This unusual level of detail – including the slender shape of the fish and position of its bones and fins – has revealed a lot about the species.
Frese said when viewed under a high-powered microscope, the fish bellies were full of the antennae of phantom midge larvae (a type of insect), bits and pieces of half-digested wings, and even a small mussel or bivalve.

Villagers near Kasungu national park, which is Malawi’s second largest and crosses the Zambian border, say they are living in fear for their livelihoods and safety after 263 elephants were introduced in July 2022, causing a sharp spike in human-wildlife conflict.
More than 50 children were orphaned between July 2022 and November 2024 as a result of the translocated elephants, according to local communities. Among the 10 people killed were John Kayedzeka, 31, who was trampled by a herd while working in a field in September 2022 and Masiye Phiri, 31, who died after she was charged by a bull elephant while in the garden with her two-year-old child a year later.
Local people say that elephants are also routinely raiding their crops and trampling fields, threatening their livelihoods.

Valerie, the miniature dachshund that has been missing for more than 500 days, has survived since running away from her owners. It’s hard to picture the 4kg, adorable, goofy-eared, big-eyed sausage dog choosing this particular meal, but that’s a prevailing theory.
“Apparently, this thing’s running up and down the north coast. I think it’s old enough to vote now,” local councillor Sam Mumford says.
People have been trying to find Valerie since she went missing in November 2023.
Her owners, NSW couple Josh Fishlock and Georgia Gardner, were visiting Stokes Bay, home to one of Australia’s best beaches but also farmland and dense scrub. She fled, and the pair searched for her with the help of locals but to no avail.
Then, in March, reports began coming in that Valerie had been spotted. One picture appears to show the dog’s oversized ears poking above some paddock stubble.
Kangala Wildlife Rescue volunteers have been using surveillance, traps and lures to try to find Valerie. They captured a video of her capering about, apparently healthy, but she remains at large.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/apr/12/california-sea-lions-domoic-acid-poisoning
While toxic algae blooms have plagued the Golden state for the past four years, 2025 may be the worst year yet – at least for San Diego. SeaWorld alone has rescued 47 sea lions and 30 birds with suspecteddomoic acid poisoning this year, compared with only 11 sea lions in 2024 and 18 in 2023.
And beyond just San Diego, the outbreak has sickened hundreds of sea lions, dolphins, birds and other marine animalsin Californiaover the past month, leaving animal rescue workers scrambling to keep up. Small fish who consume the toxic algae, are then eaten by bigger animals, like sea lions and dolphins.
For a sea lion with domoic acid poisoning, which can lead to seizures and heart failure, the chance of survival is roughly 50-50 if treated in time, Smith said. For a dolphin, it’s often fatal.
In response to the current outbreak, the SeaWorld San Diego rescue team has had to double its staff. The team has been receiving roughly 100 calls a day for several weeks.
While scientists are still working to determine why, exactly, this year’s bloom has been so extensive, with some posing questions about the potential impact of debris from the Los Angeles wildfires in January, warming oceans fueled by climate crisis have long been shown to contribute to extreme algae blooms.

Caroline Bennett, founder of Sole of Discretion, which champions sustainable seafood from small-scale fishers, says about five years ago foreign buyers turned to UK cuttlefish as an alternative to squid, and almost overnight it became less sustainable – turning from amber to red in 2020. “Big trawlers had taken out so much of the biomass of cuttlefish, in Brixham they called it black gold,” she says.

In towns here, rhinos can often be seen wandering the streets, sauntering past restaurants, bars and motorbike stands, snoozing on hotel lawns and grazing in people’s back gardens. Residents are curious but wary of them.
When the park was created in 1973 there were 100 greater one-horned rhinos. Now there are almost 700 in Chitwan, 90% of Nepal’s total. The human population is also growing, with 300,000 people living in the buffer zone, which has made it a hotspot for human wildlife conflict. It is not just rhinos – the park’s growing population of elephants, tigers and sloth bears have also killed humans.

Christmas Island’s red crabs begin their famed annual migration as authorities report progress to control pests threatening the charismatic crustaceans.
It was estimated roughly two-thirds of the crab population was decimated throughout the early 2000s into the mid-2010s. Fast-forward to 2025 and red crab numbers could be breaching the 180 million mark - a phenomenal recovery in just 10 years, Tiernan said.
Bumper years for returning baby crabs have further helped boost numbers. It’s not clear why so many crabs returned in those years however, with eggs at the mercy of currents and predators once left adrift in the ocean.
Christmas Island red crabs spend most of their lives on land, returning to the water every year to breed.

How To Make A Drone-Proof Porcupine Tank
https://i.imgur.com/RQ3hHZS.jpeg
When Russian troops first realized their tanks and other armored vehicles were vulnerable to Ukraine’s explosive first-person-view drones, shortly after Russia widened its war on Ukraine in February 2022, they doubled down on a form of improvised armor that already protected some vehicles from rocket-propelled grenades.
The resulting “cope cages” — metal frames supporting slats or mesh — were awkward, ugly and, to many observers, frankly hilarious.
But they worked. Especially in conjunction with drone-grounding radio jammers. “If a tank is spotted with cages and a jammer, it takes at least double or triple the usual number — six to eight drones — to disable it,” one Ukrainian drone operator told Ukrainian-American war correspondent David Kirichenko. “We used to laugh at their cages, but now we use them, too.”
Three years later, the Russians are on their fourth generation of do-it-yourself anti-drone armor. And now we know exactly how the latest DIY armor is made. In short, take around three tons of heavy-duty aluminum cable, unwind short sections of it and weld it to a tank’s cope cage.
The result is a “hedgehog” tank with thousands of protruding metal bristles. The bristles detonate incoming FPVs before they can strike a tank’s hull. “This thick and heavy system is not impregnable, of course, but it does significantly increase the number of Ukrainian FPVs required to destroy the tank,” Canadian drone expert Roy wrote.

Baby sea otter rescued off California coast
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/nov/14/baby-sea-otter-rescued-off-california-coast
It was a foggy October afternoon on the central California coast when the Marine Mammal Center got a call on their public hotline: there were distressed cries coming from the frigid waters in Morro Bay.
The center’s experts were able to determine that the calls – which sounded almost like a human baby screeching – were coming from a roughly two-week-old sea otter pup that had been separated from its mother.
The plan was to boat around the area blasting the sound of the baby through a Bluetooth speaker to attempt to lure the mother towards the boat. They used a recording because they were worried that the pup would get tired and stop screaming, leaving them without any way to let the mom know that her pup had been found.
Eventually, a female otter popped her head above water and followed the boat, which is behavior that Zink said wasn’t normal since otters typically only sleep, eat and groom their thick, furry coats – uninterested in humans on boats.
Video shows (https://www.instagram.com/p/DQuYzbkE5E0/) the mother swimming over to her baby, who floats helplessly on its back. Eventually, the mom grabs her baby in her arms and appears to smell him, running her small hands over its dense fur. “I definitely cried a bit,” Zink said.

The species – the robust grasshopper – is native to New Zealand, and the country’s largest lowland grasshopper. It is typically grey or brown, like the river stones of the only area they inhabit, the edges of the braided rivers of MacKenzie basin.
The pink hue is thought to be caused by a genetic mutation called erythrism, which results in an over production of red pigment and less of the usual natural pigment, Schori said.
The females are about double the size of the males, and need a lot of sun to get warm enough to feed and mature eggs. They are also known to be clumsy. While they are excellent jumpers in open habitat, they are terrible at landing, Schori said, adding they were also incredibly vulnerable, which was especially concerning for the pink insect.

South Australians are being urged to feast on local oysters and then donate the shells to restore native reefs, which will filter ocean water and help fight harmful algal blooms. The shells will be put in a biodegradable cage. As baby oysters settle on them, they produce a substance that cements the reefs together.
Female oysters can release up to 3m microscopic spats – baby oysters – which then float out looking for a place to live.
The state’s climate, environment and water minister, Lucy Hood, said the government was funding the creation of 25 community reefs that would use donated shells and four large-scale limestone reefs.
“So that’s why we launched a volunteer portal and people can look at all the ways they can give back – so they can eat a lot of oysters, mussels and scallops from SA, then we sunbake them [to dry them and sterilise them] and use them for community oyster reefs.”

One of fewer than 200 albino alligators in the world, he came to the California Academy of Sciences in 2008. He became a treasured and celebrated symbol of the museum, where officials said he led “an enviable life” with enrichment, “world-class” veterinary care and “adulation from fans around the world”.

Earlier this year, the academy launched a 24/7 livestream to allow people near and far to see the alligator as he went about his daily life. A public memorial will be held in the near future, the museum said.

According to a new report by the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand and the Oxford Wildlife Trade Research Group the number of lions in captivity has more than tripled since 2018 – a trend fuelled in part by the rising popularity of exotic pets among the country’s wealthy elite. A growing network of lion farms cater to this demand – many of them run by amateurs with little experience in wildlife care.
Some buyers are Thai and some are foreigners but all of them are wealthy – lion cub prices in Thailand start from $5,000 (£3,700), with white cubs fetching up to $15,000. Keeping a lion is costly, requiring reinforced enclosures and up to 10kg of fresh meat a day.
While lion ownership requires a licence, breeding does not – anyone who legally owns lions can also breed them. Cubs don’t need to be registered until they are 60 days old, and hybrid species such as ligers are excluded from the law altogether. The result is a thriving industry, with the trade in lion cubs alone estimated at more than $1m (£740,000) a year.

But the nectar is laced with a toxic nerve agent called isoshinanolone, which strikes at the ant’s nervous system, leaving it with sluggish movements, weakened muscles, and causing it to groom itself excessively.
Eventually the prey falls upside down in spasms, with the nerve agent sometimes killing it outright. But apart from isoshinanolone, the nectar also contains three types of sugars that can all absorb water and make the rim of the pitcher especially slippery, so the prey is more likely to slide down into the pitchers.

It may be an inconvenient truth but scientists say there is now compelling evidence that these aquatic animals, with their hard shells and soft insides, are sentient, and are able to experience fear, pain and distress.
In the season of goodwill to all, should we spare a thought for crustaceans? Prof Culum Brown of Macquarie University says many things people do to crustaceans as part of the food chain are “horrendous”.
Scientists and welfare advocates say crustacean welfare should be given a higher priority when the animals are caught, killed or transported, used in experiments, kept as pets and in their natural environment. Many would like to see a ban on live animal sales, exports and on boiling alive.
Studies also show crustaceans can learn, remember and solve problems, even though the physical structure of their nervous system is totally different to ours. Crabs can solve mazes to find food, they will remember the way, and when the maze is rejigged will adapt using trial and error.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/dec/31/florida-bear-hunt
The Florida fish and wildlife conservation commission (FWC) on Tuesday announced that 52 bears were killed (https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/FLFFWCC/bulletins/4021dea?reqfrom=share) between 6 and 28 December, and promised to release a “full harvest report” in the coming months that will provide details about where and how the animals died.
The overall tally of 52 bears was far lower than the 2015 hunt, a planned three-week event that was shut down within 48 hours (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/oct/26/florida-ends-black-bear-hunt-after-two-days) when almost 300 bears, many of them females either pregnant or with cubs, were slaughtered.
Critics, however, say the state’s “war on bears” is based on “bloodlust, not science (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/03/florida-bear-hunt)”, and have highlighted far-fetched claims such as Republican state representative Jason Shoaf’s 2024 assertion (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/feb/05/florida-bears-crack-jason-shoaf) that black bears high on crack were breaking into people’s homes and “tearing them apart”.

Japanese island a rabbit paradise
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jan/02/japan-island-rabbit-okunoshima
From 1929 until the end of the second world war, the island hosted poisonous gas research and production facilities run by the Japanese imperial army. The operation was so secret that Okunoshima was not included in contemporaneous maps of Japan.
The manufacture of weapons of chemical warfare – which was not exposed until the 1980s – also marked the beginning of the island’s connection to rabbits. About 200 were used in experiments to test the efficacy of gas that Japan’s army used during the Sino-Japanese war and, later, to arm balloon bombs targeting the US.
In the early 1970s, a nearby elementary school released a small number of rabbits on the abandoned island, hoping they would bring it back to life. In 2024, nearly 200,000 people visited Okunoshima, drawn by its eminently Instagram-friendly coastline and the promise of entering a rabbit paradise.

Tuna record £2.4m at Tokyo auction
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jan/05/giant-bluefin-tuna-sold-record-amount-tokyo-auction-kiyoshi-kimura
Kiyoshi Kimura, who styles himself the “Tuna King”, paid the top price for the 243kg (536lbs) specimen, which was caught off Japan’s northern coast.
“I’d thought we would be able to buy a little cheaper but the price soared before you knew it,” said Kimura after the pre-dawn auction. “I was surprised at the price. I hope that by eating auspicious tuna, as many people as possible will feel energised.”
The 510.3m yen price at the new year auction was the highest since comparable data started being collected in 1999. The previous record was 333.6m yen for a 278kg bluefin in 2019 after the market moved from its traditional Tsukiji area in central Tokyo to a more modern facility. The top bidder last year paid 207m yen for a 276kg bluefin.
Shortly after this year’s auction, the tuna was butchered and turned into sushi for Kimura’s restaurant chain, selling for about 500 yen (£2.40) a roll.

Bear living ‘rent-free’ under California home has been removed
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jan/09/bear-under-california-home-evicted
Altadena resident Ken Johnson first noticed the bear was living in the crawl space below his home in late November.
“He’s a nuisance and he’s living under my house rent-free,” Johnson told the Orange County Register last month.
After the Eaton wildfire tore through the Angeles national forest and scorched parts of Altadena last January, wildlife – including several bears – sought shelter in the community. In the weeks after the fire, at least two 500lb-plus black bears sought refuge in homes evacuated during the wildfire, though it is unclear if 2120 was one of those bears.
On Tuesday, a Lake Tahoe-based non-profit called Bear League stepped in to help Johnson by shooting at the bear with paintball guns, which drove it from under the house.
“I couldn’t believe it was so fast,” Johnson told KTLA. “These guys went in, they crawled in behind him and, boom, he was out.”
The bear tried to come back two days later but was met with a deterrent – an electrified mat that covered the crawl space’s entrance, according to KTLA.

Single-tusked elephant killed 22 in India rampage
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jan/13/search-elephant-people-killed-india-jharkand
Since the beginning of January, 22 people have been killed by a single-tusked elephant that has been tearing through forests and villages in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.
The attacks have mainly taken place at night as the elephant has entered small villages. The first victim was a 35-year-old man in Bandijhari village on 1 January. Since then, those trampled to death or suffering fatal injuries have included a couple and their two young children and a forest department official.
The region has been put on high alert and residents living in the Chaibasa district, where the elephant was last spotted, have been warned to stay away from the forest areas and not go out at night.
Over the past five years, more than 2,800 people in India have died from deadly encounters with elephants.

scientists to reassess intelligence of cows
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2026/jan/19/back-scratching-cow-veronika-bovine-intelligence
Scientists have been forced to rethink the intelligence of cattle after an Austrian cow named Veronika displayed an impressive – and until now undocumented – knack for tool use.Witgar Wiegele, an organic farmer and baker from a small town in Carinthia near the Italian border, keeps Veronika as a pet and noticed that she occasionally played with sticks and used them to scratch her body.
Wiegle, who said Veronika recognised family members’ voices and hurried to meet them when they called, began playing with pieces of wood years ago, then worked out how to scratch herself with sticks.
Word soon got around and before long a video clip of the cow’s behaviour reached biologists in Vienna who specialise in animal intelligence. They immediately grasped the importance of the footage. “It was a cow using an actual tool,” said Dr Antonio Osuna Mascaró at the city’s University of Veterinary Medicine. “We got everything ready and jumped in the car to visit.”
Armed with a deck brush, Osuna Mascaró and his colleague Alice Auersperg set about testing Veronika’s skills. Through a series of field trials, she could not only pick up the broom, but wield it according to the job at hand. If the broom was at an awkward angle, Veronika used her tongue to reposition it before clamping it in place with her teeth.
Veronika favoured the bristled end of the broom to scratch the tough skin on her back. But she switched to the smooth handle and scratched more gently when the itch was on more delicate, lower body areas such as her udders and belly, according to the study in Current Biology (https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(25)01597-0).
As the scientists write in the study: “She did not fashion tools like the cow in Gary Larson’s cartoon, but she selected, adjusted and used one with notable dexterity and flexibility. Perhaps the real absurdity lies not in imagining a tool-using cow, but in assuming such a thing could never exist.”

Environment minister Andrew Powell said on Sunday that an entire pack of 10 animals would be euthanised.
The group were linked to the death of Piper James, 19, on Monday. An autopsy released on Friday found physical evidence consistent with drowning and injuries consistent with dingo bites, but “pre-mortem dingo bite marks” were “not likely to have caused immediate death”.
The island, about 380 kilometres north of the Queensland capital, Brisbane, is home to an estimated 200 dingoes, which are sacred to the Indigenous Butchulla people, who call them wongari, and are specifically mentioned in K’gari’s world heritage listing.
K’gari is a national park and owned through native title. The Butchulla people co-manage the island in collaboration with the state government.
Six animals were destroyed on Saturday, but Royan said the traditional owners of the island hadn’t been consulted on the decision or even told about it until Sunday, in spite of the island’s management plan.
“I was dumbfounded,” she said. “This government has no respect for First Nations people. It’s a disgrace”.

Florida euthanizes 5,000 iguanas after cold snap stuns reptiles
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/feb/05/florida-frozen-iguanas-euthanized
Members of the public, and professional pest control companies, brought 5,195 of the large, invasive green iguanas to FWC collection centers, where they were euthanized.
Almost all of the roundup occurred in south Florida, where the creatures started falling from trees on Saturday. The tropical iguanas’ systems shut down below 45F, but they can remain alive for days, stiff and motionless until temperatures rise.
Temperatures in south Florida, which reached their lowest since at least 2010, rose again significantly by Wednesday, with many thousands more fallen iguanas that were not collected warming up and recovering from their extended torpor.

São Paulo dog stayed by owner’s grave for 10 years
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/feb/12/sao-paulo-law-dogs-bond
Bob’s former owner died in 2011. After her burial, the brown long-haired mixed-breed dog reportedly refused to leave her side at a cemetery in Taboão da Serra, about 12 miles from the state capital, São Paulo.
Relatives are said to have tried several times to take the dog away, but he always returned and was eventually adopted by cemetery staff, who provided him with a kennel and regularly fed, bathed and vaccinated him.
Gravedigger Bob gained national fame for accompanying other funeral processions while reportedly carrying a small ball in his mouth, trying to play with visitors – something many saw as a gesture of comfort in moments of grief.
In 2021, after leaving the cemetery grounds, the dog was struck by a motorcycle and died.
There was widespread public commotion, and, as there was no legal provision at the time, the Taboão da Serra city council made an exception and allowed it to be buried alongside its former owner.

Man in trained his dog to illegally dump rubbish
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/feb/20/man-sicily-trained-dog-illegally-dump-rubbish-catania
The footage shows a small dog trotting along Via Pulacara in Catania’s San Giorgio district with a bag of rubbish in its mouth before dropping it neatly at the roadside.
Authorities said the scene left little room for doubt: the animal had been trained to spare its owner from being filmed dumping rubbish illegally. The behaviour was “as cunning as it is doubly wrong” – polluting the city while attempting to sidestep the rules by exploiting an unwitting pet.
Illegal dumping is a persistent problem in Italy, particularly in the south, carrying significant environmental and economic costs. In 2023, more than 9,300 waste-related offences were recorded – a 66% increase on the previous year.
Under Italian law, the unauthorised abandonment of waste – including household rubbish bags – can carry fines ranging from €1,500 to €18,000, with the possibility of criminal charges.

pets being abandoned in Dubai as owners flee over Iran war
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/mar/11/pets-abandoned-dubai-expat-owners-flee-iran-war
Last week, the UK government operated an emergency evacuation flight for people leaving the Middle East as the war continued. About 45,000 British nationals have left the Middle East since 1 March.
Hannah Mainds, the chief executive of the RSPCA Blackpool and north Lancashire branch, previously lived in Dubai and helped care for pets left behind after their owners suddenly left the country.
“Some [pets] were microchipped and clearly once loved, but their families had gone. It’s heartbreaking for rescuers and frightening for the animals,” Mainds said.
“Animals shouldn’t become the forgotten victims when people leave a country in a crisis. Pets rely entirely on their owners. They can’t understand why their family has suddenly disappeared – so we urge those facing uncertainty to remember their animals and get a proper plan in place.”

Native British wildlife will feature on the next set of £5, £10, £20 and £50 notes, the Bank of England has announced, but it has yet to be decided which creatures will make the cut.
Early favourites include uncontroversial and much-loved garden animals, such as the hedgehog and the robin, and attractive predators such as the barn owl. In Scotland, notes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland feature mackerel, otters, red squirrels and osprey.
The animal welfare charity RSPCA has called for unfashionable wildlife, such as the feral pigeon, fox, herring gull and brown rat, to be represented.

The roughly 10-metre-long (33ft) sea mammal was first spotted on Monday stuck in shallow water off Niendorf near the northern city of Lübeck.
Then commenced days of intensive efforts to free the whale using boats to make waves and excavators to dig up sand, as fears grew for its life.
Rescue teams on Thursday began using earth-moving equipment on a pontoon to dredge a channel through the sand to give the animal a route to escape.
However, he cautioned against premature celebration and said the animal was “very ill” and had a long way to go before reaching “its real home, the Atlantic”.
The whale had been entangled in a fishing net, most of which rescuers managed to remove.

Hedgehogs have appeared on the “near threatened” red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature since 2024 after a drop in numbers of at least 30% over the previous decade.
Moreover, the majority of hedgehogs with cut injuries are found days or weeks after the accident happened and therefore have to endure considerable suffering, pain and harm,
Hedgehogs are subject to protection under German law, with trapping, injuring or killing of them subject to fines of up to €65,000 (£57,000).

After the RSPCA posted images of the property online showing dozens of the animals crammed into a living room space, members of the public accused the charity of generating the photos with AI tools. The animal welfare charity said it took in 87 dogs from the property at an undisclosed location in the UK and the remainder went to the Dogs Trust, another charity.
The property owners told RSPCA inspectors they had lost control of the breeding of the poodle-cross dogs and the situation quickly “got out of hand”.
Last year, the charity responded to 4,200 incidents that involved at least 10 animals at the same address across England and Wales. The charity said cases of large numbers of animals being kept at one address could be linked to mental health struggles, the cost of living crisis, or breeders operating with poor practices. RSPCA experts say initially well-meaning individuals often see situations get out of hand.

Gray whales in San Francisco Bay dying there at alarming rates
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/apr/15/gray-whales-san-francisco-bay
A new study, published this week in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, has found that gray whales in the bay have been dying at alarming rates, largely due to collisions with vessels.
Eastern North Pacific (ENP) gray whales began to show up with more frequency in the well-trafficked maritime corridor around 2018. According to researchers, at least 18% of gray whales that entered the bay from 2018 to 2025 have died. They determined that for more than 40% of the whale carcasses, the cause of death was blunt force trauma consistent with vessel strikes, prompting calls for renewed efforts to help avoid more fatal collisions.
The true mortality rate for whales in the bay may be higher, hovering somewhere from 40% to 50%, Slaathaug said. It was difficult to match photographs of living whales to dead animals, due to skin decay or lost carcasses, she said.

Bear-suit insurance scam in California
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/apr/18/california-bear-suit-insurance-scam
Three individuals in Los Angeles were sentenced to jail time for an insurance fraud scheme in which they staged attacks on high-end vehicles by having a person dress up in a bear costume – then pretending that person was an actual bear.
The plan unraveled after the four defendants in the case filed an insurance claim in 2024 claiming that the bear had damaged a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost, going so far as to provide a video of the alleged attack inside the car parked at Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino mountains.
Investigators then discovered two additional claims of a person performing the same act in two more vehicles, each a Mercedes.
As part of the investigation, the state’s insurance department asked a California department of fish and wildlife biologist to review the videos. The scientist determined that “it was clearly a human in a bear suit”, a press release at the time stated.

The birds have made their home in the gardens of abandoned properties and perch on rooftops and fences, or peek out from trees. They carefully navigate the traffic, sometimes tapping their beaks on the windows of parked cars after catching their reflection. The Guardian saw one shamelessly leaping over the gate of a block of flats and doing a poo on the entrance steps.
“There are too many of them,” said Francesco, who preferred not to give his surname. “They jump over the wall and on to my balcony, leaving excrement. But the main issue is the mating – the screams are keeping people awake.”
His relative Marco said: “Each time I come to Francesco’s home, I tread on peacock poo outside. It’s unhygienic; the peacocks need to be contained.”
Some say the peacock, a bird of Indian origin, was introduced to the European continent by Alexander the Great, or even before. Their populations are well established in parts of Europe, especially in England and Spain, and although some have been reported in Italy, their presence in Punta Marina is especially notable.

Blond buffalo nicknamed ‘Donald Trump’
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/may/28/blond-bangladeshi-buffalo-nicknamed-donald-trump-saved-from-eid-sacrifice
A rare albino buffalo in Bangladesh nicknamed “Donald Trump” for its distinctive blond tuft has been spared from Eid al-Adha sacrifice after a last-minute government intervention, according to a home ministry official.
The nearly 700kg (1,543lb) animal had already been sold for ritual slaughter when authorities stepped in, citing security concerns after a surge of public interest before Thursday’s festival.
The minister of home affairs, Salahuddin Ahmed, ordered the buffalo be spared, the buyer refunded, and the animal moved to the national zoo in Dhaka. “At the last moment, the decision was taken to spare the buffalo from sacrifice due to security concerns and the unusual level of public interest,” a ministry official said.
Crowds gathered at the farm, with visitors travelling from far afield to see its blond fringe and calm demeanour. The owner of the farm, Ziauddin Mridha, said his younger brother had given the buffalo the Trump nickname after spotting his resemblance to the US president.

‘Spy turtles’ and ‘spy fish’ being used to monitor Chinese waters, Beijing claims
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jun/12/china-spy-turtles-spy-fish-monitor-waters-claims
In a post on the Chinese platform WeChat on Friday, the ministry warned that an “invisible secret war” was quietly playing out in the seas around China as foreign agencies were collecting sensitive data “through a variety of new spying devices” to produce underwater maps that pose a “serious threat to our national security”.
Among the espionage techniques being used, it claimed, were large marine animals, including “spy turtles” and “spy fish”, that had been found “attached to sensors” as they swam in Chinese waters.
The animals were “collecting sensitive marine environment data such as water temperature, salinity and ocean currents in real time, and transmitting them overseas via satellite”, it said, without providing specifics about where the animals had been found, or who had equipped them.
China regularly makes claims of espionage efforts taking place in nearby waters including the South China Sea, the East China Sea and the Taiwan strait, which are some of the most militarily sensitive and heavily contested in the world. In 2024, it said it had identified “lighthouses” hidden on the ocean floor that could guide the transit of foreign submarines, and “pre-set the field for battle”.

A cat decided it was the main character during the final scene of a Romeo and Juliet performance by the Imperial Russian Ballet Company in Izmir, Turkey.
The cat had a lie down, licked itself and played with Romeo's hair as the performers kept going with their performance undeterred while onlookers chuckled in the background.
